Series Title: The Helper
Main Texts:
Romans 8:11 “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”
Galatians 5:16–25 “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”
Supporting Texts:
Ezekiel 36:26–27 “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”
John 3:5–6 “Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
Titus 3:4–6 “But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,”
2 Corinthians 3:17–18 “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”
INTRODUCTION: CONTEXT AND CONNECTION
INTRODUCTION: CONTEXT AND CONNECTION
In the first two sessions, we explored:
The promise of the Holy Spirit (Week 1),
And the Person of the Holy Spirit—our divine Helper (Week 2).
Now, we turn to His purpose in your daily life.
Galatians 5:25 “If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”
The Holy Spirit doesn’t just dwell in you to give you comfort or occasional direction—He empowers you to live the life God designed for you: a life of freedom, victory, holiness, and fruitfulness.
I. THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVES LIFE TO OUR MORTAL BODIES
I. THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVES LIFE TO OUR MORTAL BODIES
Romans 8:11 “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”
A. The Power That Raised Jesus Now Dwells in You
A. The Power That Raised Jesus Now Dwells in You
The Holy Spirit was the agent of Christ’s resurrection.
Romans 1:4 “and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,”
That same Spirit now quickens your mortal body—physically, spiritually, mentally.
Titus 3:5–6 “he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,”
B. Life in the Spirit Begins at New Birth
B. Life in the Spirit Begins at New Birth
John 3:5–6 “Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
Flesh gives birth to flesh; the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
Christianity is not born from your effort, but from being born again and
Christianity is not about striving through human effort; it's about experiencing a spiritual rebirth brought about by the Holy Spirit.
II. THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS YOU TO OVERCOME SIN
II. THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS YOU TO OVERCOME SIN
Galatians 5:16 “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
A. The Spirit and Flesh Are Opposed
A. The Spirit and Flesh Are Opposed
The flesh is the fallen nature. It seeks self over God.
The Spirit leads in freedom and obedience.
Romans 8:13 “For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
B. You Cannot Defeat Sin by Willpower Alone
B. You Cannot Defeat Sin by Willpower Alone
Victory comes by walking in the Spirit—not striving in the flesh.
“Walk” implies an ongoing relationship, not a one-time experience.
Ezekiel 36:27 “And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”
III. THE HOLY SPIRIT PRODUCES CHRIST’S CHARACTER IN YOU
III. THE HOLY SPIRIT PRODUCES CHRIST’S CHARACTER IN YOU
Galatians 5:22–23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
A. Fruit Is the Nature of Jesus Formed in You
A. Fruit Is the Nature of Jesus Formed in You
You do not produce fruit by effort; fruit grows from abiding.
John 15:4–5 “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
These qualities describe the nature of Christ.
B. Fruit Is More Important Than Gifts
B. Fruit Is More Important Than Gifts
Gifts are powerful, but fruit is proof of maturity
Matthew 7:16–20 “You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.”
The Spirit’s presence is not measured by emotion but by transformation.
– “…Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom… and we are being transformed into His image…”
IV. THE HOLY SPIRIT LEADS YOU INTO FREEDOM AND TRANSFORMATION
IV. THE HOLY SPIRIT LEADS YOU INTO FREEDOM AND TRANSFORMATION
Galatians 5:18 “But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”
A. Freedom Is Not Lawlessness—It Is Life in the Spirit
A. Freedom Is Not Lawlessness—It Is Life in the Spirit
The Spirit does not lead you into bondage or condemnation.

A. Acknowledge Your Need
A. Acknowledge Your Need
You cannot walk in victory without the Holy Spirit.
B. Yield Daily to His Leading
B. Yield Daily to His Leading
Romans 6:13 “Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.”
Ask daily: “Holy Spirit, what are You saying today?”
C. Expect Gradual but Certain Transformation
C. Expect Gradual but Certain Transformation
