A Mother’s Faith
A Mother’s Faith
Good morning, children of God! What an incredible blessing it is to be here today. We are called into unity and fellowship as a family in Christ. As a family in Christ, today we celebrate Moms.
I have shared with Pastor Paul, as well as with some of you, that there are two holidays I am completely unqualified to stand up here and speak on. Veterans day and Mothers Day.
I hold the vocation of motherhood and godly mothers in such high regard that it is impossible for me to put together a sermon that I think adequately relays the importance of godly mothers.
The sacrifices that godly mothers make, and the example of Yeshua’s love that so many mothers reflect is mind boggling. In my humble opinion, other than Jesus’ death on the cross for us, a mother’s love is the closest human example of God’s love for us that exists.
As we continue this morning, as a family in Christ, I want us to be sensitive to some things.
There are those within the body of Christ that are estranged from their mothers.
There are mothers estranged from their children.
There are mothers among us who have suffered miscarriages and never got to hold their child.
There are mothers among us who have suffered the death of a child.
There are those of us whose mothers are no longer with us.
There are grandmothers, aunts, sisters, daughters, and even fathers among us who have had to fill the role of a mother.
Wherever you may be in your relationship with your mother or with your children this morning, you are a child of God. Nothing can pluck you from the Father’s hand.
I want to take a moment to speak to the men of God. This sermon is as much for you as it is for our sisters and Mothers in the faith. We must be reminded at times of our duty to support, protect, and buildup the mother’s in the family of God. Whether she is your mother or a mother you know.
Now, I am going to speak directly to the women of God here and online:
New American Standard Hebrew-Aramaic and Greek Dictionaries: Updated Edition 1332 בִּתְיָה (Bithyah)
בִּתְיָה Bithyah
You are a “Bat-yah, a daughter of the Great I Am, YHVH, Adonai, the One True Sovereign God. You are beautiful inside and out, and the LORD delights in you. At your best, at your worst, and everywhere in-between, you remain God’s daughter. Nobody can take that away from you.
You may not feel like it sometimes, you may want to ignore it sometimes, you may not even want it sometimes. God has given you everything you need to overcome ANYTHING that comes your way! You have been given power under the authority of Christ himself! You have the very Spirit of God dwelling within you. Amen?
I believe that at times, wives and mothers come under greater spiritual attack than men. We all know the story of what happened in the Garden. Have you ever thought about the fact that Satan’s first attack in the Bible was against the woman in the garden? The enemies first attack against mankind was against the mother of all of mankind.
It was not because she was less intelligent. It was because the enemy knows that Godly women are the keepers of the home, that they are the support system God put in place, and if the enemy can get to her, it will immediately affect the family. Satan was thinking long-term.
If you really look at what happened in the garden, you find that the world’s first mother wanted to be like the One she loved the most. She wanted to be like God. That is how the enemy got to her. He convinced her to put her desire to be like God ahead of her obedience to God. It caused her to start justifying thoughts and behaviors that were not of God. I am certain that we have all been there a time or two.
I have heard it said that had the enemy gone after Adam first, it would have never have happened. Adam was right there, and he did nothing to protect his wife! He was like “okaaay honey,” but that is a story for another day.
But God. God provides! The first mention of our Lord and Savior appears in that same chapter, right after they sinned! Right after the fall! God says this to the Serpent in Genesis 3:15:
15 And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”
Jesus defeated the enemy at the cross. Jesus crushed him. What an incredible lesson for all of us. Seek the LORD first in all of our decisions. Jesus sought the LORD in all things. Jesus remained obedient unto God all the way to the cross.
In all the mess of the world, in all the competing voices you hear, when the enemy attacks, remain obedient to the Father. That is how we show our love for God. That faith and love for God that you have flows from you into your family and into others around you.
Whether you are a biological mother, a bonus mom, someone who has had to fill in as a mom, or a spiritual mom, one thing does not change: It is your love for, your faith in, and your obedience to Christ that inspires and influences those around you. There is no greater calling in this life! It is a calling of eternal significance.
A Mother’s Influence Leaves a Legacy of Faith
Women of God, NEVER discount the influence you have over your children, grandchildren, and others in your life, even if you do not see the fruit now. Motherhood is a lifelong journey that bears generational fruit. Timothy, Paul’s son in the faith, is a perfect example of the generational influence that mothers have over their children. The Apostle Paul wrote this to Timothy in one of two Pastoral letters to Timothy.
5 I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you.
A faith that first filled his grandmother, Lois, not his grandfather! His grandfather is not even mentioned! Timothy’s grandmother, Lois, was the first Jewish believer to convert to Christianity in Timothy’s family. She learned about Jesus and shared the Gospel message with her family. She did not just share the gospel, she lived it out in genuine faith. Because of that, Timothy’s mother, Eunice, became a believer. They both lived out and taught Timothy about our Lord and Savior. Luke records the Apostle Paul speaking about it again in Acts 16:1.
Paul went first to Derbe and then to Lystra, where there was a young disciple named Timothy. His mother was a Jewish believer, but his father was a Greek.
Biblical scholars believe that Timothy was in his late teens when he started his ministry work with the Apostle Paul. A young minister even by today's standards. Here is where it gets crazy. Timothy’s father was a Greek! His father was not a believer. Timothy’s father had nothing to do with Timothy’s decision to place his faith in Christ. It all fell to his mother and grandmother.
There are a lot of mothers who have found themselves having to act as the spiritual leaders in their homes. The LORD knows it was like that in my home for a while. Women having to try and fill the role of a godly mother while trying to fill the void left by an ungodly father.
The power of the gospel message of Jesus Christ to change hearts and minds is shown through these two women. We have witnessed the same through many of the women here today. Timothy did not remain a pagan or go on to be a non-believer like his father. He went on to become a “fellow worker in the faith” with the Apostle Paul.
This is the same Timothy that 1 Timothy and 2 Timothy are written to. It is widely held that 2 Timothy was the last letter the Apostle Paul wrote, knowing he was about to be put to death. The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to a young man who would not have had a chance without his grandmother or his mother’s influence.
Women of God, hear me clearly. Never discount the influence that you have over your family and those around you. You may feel like you have to do it alone at times. You may feel defeated at times. God is with you. Follow His lead. Know that your children are watching, your grandchildren are watching, your nieces are watching, your nephews are watching. You may very well be the reason they come to know Jesus Christ.
A Mother’s Love is an Expression of God’s Love
No greater compliment can be paid to motherhood than God comparing His great love for us with the tender and compassionate love of a godly mother. God said this through the Great Prophet Isaiah:
13 I will comfort you there in Jerusalem as a mother comforts her child.”
How many times did Israel turn away from God? A LOT! How many times did they mess up, and God showed His mercy, grace, and love anyway? JUST LIKE A MOTHER DOES! EVERY TIME! This verse is God’s promise of bringing the Hebrews out of captivity and back home. To care for His children and love them, even though they were an absolute mess!
I can see why God’s love is compared to a mother’s love. Ya’ll, I love my two sons dearly, but I have wanted to kick the boys out of the house 1000 times for messing up. I may be the only father that has experienced that, but I am pretty sure I am not.
And then here comes their mom; little Ms. Love and Mercy, at least with them anyway. If there is a place she will not back down, it is in her love and compassion for her children. She has NO PROBLEM reminding me of the man of God I am supposed to be. Reminding me that I am to be the spiritual leader of our home. IT IS Absolutely infuriating at times! Yet, she is right.
We have seen mother’s, time and again, express God’s love for their children and others. It should challenge every man and father in the body of Christ to show the same love and mercy of God. A mother’s love embodies the nurturing characteristics of God’s love that we should all aspire to attain.
A Mother’s Beauty is Unfading
There is just something uniquely beautiful about a woman of God. I am probably going to get some backlash from some of the women here for what I am about to say. I firmly believe what I am going to say, and scripture speaks to it.
This world has done so much damage to how women and mothers view themselves. I did not fully realize it until several years ago when I got sick and was in bed for a few weeks. I was watching television during the day, and the ads were horrible!
“Have wrinkles? Use this cream.” “Overweight? We have diet pills for you.” “This makeup will make you look ten years younger.” “Are your kids struggling? Then you need to put them in this program.” “Stretch marks? Belly Fat? This laser surgery will remove them!” Our sisters and mothers in the faith are being convinced that they are ugly, bad moms, failures, and in need of a complete overhaul. It is sickening!
This world is doing everything it can to convince our sisters in Christ, our wives, our mothers, that they are never good enough and never will be good enough! As a husband, as a son, and as a man of God, it breaks my heart. It makes me sick. It makes me mad! We have seen the gentle and beautiful spirit of many women and mothers broken by this world. Women of God you are beautiful. You are enough. I love these verses out of 1 Peter 3:3-4.
3 Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes.
4 You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.
I do not care what this world has to say. I care about what God has to say, Amen? You are beautiful. You are valued. You are worthy. You are accepted. You are a blessing. You are loved. You are Bat-Yah. You are a daughter of God. Find your joy in God. Find your peace in God, not this world.
God doesn’t call you to be perfect; He calls you to walk in His perfection. It’s not by your might, it is not by your power, but by His Spirit. Compare what God’s Word says with what the world says, and if they differ, REJECT THE WORLD’S POINT OF VIEW. God does not lie. Take Him at His Word.
Mother’s are so important to the body of Christ, that Jesus specifically spoke of it from the cross. No matter how many times I try to envision Jesus speaking anything from the cross, I do not know how he did it. Beaten and battered beyond recognition, he was not recognizable, and crucified. How could it have been anything more than a gurgled whisper? Somehow, Jesus was able to utter seven things from the cross. Mothers are so important that Jesus said this In his third of those seven utterances from the cross:
When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.”
And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home.
What Jesus does in these two verses is mind-blowing. He combines the physical with the spiritual. The first thing he does is make sure his mother is cared for. He wanted to be sure that they were going to take care of his mother. We are all tasked with caring for our mothers. Whether she is your mother or not.
Now, here is where it gets interesting. According to the Jewish culture, the next oldest sibling was responsible for caring for their mother. Jesus had brothers. Why was it not one of them? Why was it not James, Jesus's half-brother, tasked with taking care of Mary?
Jesus knew that His mother, Mary, needed to be around those whom Jesus was closest to and that some of the disciples needed Mary to fill the role of a spiritual mother. Mary was with Jesus longer than anybody else in scripture. She was his mom. She changed his diapers, kissed his boo-boo’s, and loved him as only a mother can. She knew Jesus better than anybody else on earth. She loved Jesus like nobody else on earth.
Jesus’ mother was now being called to be a bonus mother and a spiritual mother. There are times you will be called to fill the role of a spiritual mother. Prepare your hearts and minds, because if it has not happened yet, it will happen. It may sound strange to you, but several of my sisters in Christ have had to flip a switch at times and act as a spiritual mother in my life.
Sisters in Christ, mothers in the faith, we love you. We appreciate you. And we honor you today. Please come forward, and receive a small token of our appreciation this morning. Afterwards, please return to a seat on the left side so that we can pray over you.
Men of God, please stand. I am calling you out of your comfort zone this morning. Let us surround our sisters. Know that the prayers of the faithful and righteous availeth much. Raise your hands out over your sisters in Christ. These, our sisters who we know would and have gladly gone into battle against the enemy for you and me.
Pray Over the Women in the Church
Father God, we pray over your daughters this morning. Those who are here, those who are not here, and those who are online with us. Our sisters, our wives, our mothers. Remind their hearts not of what the world wants them to be, or who the world says they are, but Father, of who you want them to be and who you say they are. Speak to their souls right now LORD. Let them see, through your eyes, how valuable, how beautiful, and how precious they are to the Kingdom and to you.
We release a blessing over each of these, your daughters, that each heart knows your salvation and your freedom. That she prospers in all things. That she knows she is cared for and accepted, not rejected. That Jesus has broken every curse ever spoken over her. That she was born for such a time as this, with a Godly purpose. Sisters in Christ, know that you are worthy, you are holy, you are wanted, and you are blessed. YOU ARE LOVED! In the mighty, unmatched name of Yeshua Hamashiach, Jesus the Messiah, Amen.
