Moms are an incredible reflection of God’s love.
Shout out to my mom! If you are listening, happy Mother’s Day! I love you, Mary Frances. I love you! Happy Mother’s Day!
A football player by the name of Derrick Harmon
He shares how his mom made sacrifices in her life so that he could become the man he is today.
She served as a model of resilience to him.
She endured numerous health issues.
She underwent several brain surgeries.
She experienced a stroke that left her paralyzed on one side.
While playing in college, Derrick used the NIL money he earned to support his mother.
Whenever he felt like quitting or thought something was too difficult, he thought about his mom and pushed through.
Derrick said, "After all those brain surgeries, man, she did not give up,” he told reporters on Thursday. “She still needed practice, still went to work. Always in the back of my head from the beginning of my college career was: ‘Why can’t I keep going? If I’m tired, injured, whatever it is, why can’t I keep going?’ If she can get up and she can keep going after brain surgeries.” He added, “She was my inspiration."
His mom ended up in the hospital and was on life support.
On April 24th, 2025, Derrick was selected in the 1st round by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After being selected, he rushed to the hospital to celebrate with his mom.
Although terminal, she waited out of love for her son, wanting to see him succeed.
Shortly after he went to the hospital to tell her he got drafted, she passed away.
Derrick’s mom’s love for him was so strong that, wanting to see his joy and to witness him getting drafted, she stayed alive just so she could see it.
A number of years ago, there was another boy whose parents divorced when he was 8 because his mother discovered that his father had another family elsewhere.
They had to live in poor multi-family dwellings to get by.
By age 10, his mother managed to move them back to Detroit.
When he was young, he dreamed of becoming a missionary doctor.
His mother played an influential role in training him to read his Bible.
School was challenging, so in an attempt to improve his grades, his mother limited his TV time.
She required him to read two books a week and write reports on each.
Still living on food stamps, his mother taught him the importance of saving and bought a new car with cash.
He had a violent temper.
"As a teenager, he would go after people with rocks, and bricks, and baseball bats, and hammers."
He said he once tried to hit his mother on the head with a hammer over a clothing dispute.
While in the ninth grade, he attempted to stab a friend who had changed the radio station. Fortunately, the blade broke on his friend's belt buckle.
After this incident, he began reading the Book of Proverbs and applying verses on anger. As a result, he states he "never had another problem with temper."
In high school, he graduated 3rd in his class academically.
He went on to Yale University for his undergraduate studies.
He would then attend the University of Michigan Medical School.
After medical school, he was hired at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
He would become one of the world’s best pediatric neurosurgeons and led a team that successfully separated conjoined twins.
The man’s name is Ben Carson.
If not for his mother's dedication and discipline, Ben Carson would not have become the man he is.
I believe mothers are able to represent a side of God’s love that we men just are not good at doing. This morning, I want to take a few minutes to look at how awesome God is, but also at how some of these Godly attributes are represented in our mothers.

Moms Comfort Their Children

God uses the analogy of a mother’s comfort to describe how He cares for us in Isaiah.
Isaiah 66:13a NASB95
“As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you;”
It amazes me how much comfort we can find in times of pain, crisis, sorrow, and loss. To be comforted in these moments is not natural, but God, in His incredible love, offers us comfort as we seek Him during these times.
Mothers are the same way. They seem to have the right words, the right touch, and the ability to comfort their children in a very special way.
We dads love our kids, but a mom’s love is just different.
Kids, when they fall and skin their knees, who do they call for? Mom!
When a child is sick, who do they want? Mom!
When a child is sad and needs comfort, who do they want? Mom!
Thank you, moms, for the comfort you offer us!

Moms are a Place of Safety

Not only does God comfort us, but He also provides us protection.
Psa 91:4, says
Psalm 91:4 NASB95
He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.
God illustrates that his protection of us is much like that of a mother hen.
Hens often protect their chicks from the weather, predators, and anything that may cause them harm.
They will call out, and the chicks run to them, hiding under their wings.
God is our refuge Psalms 46:1
Psalm 46:1 NASB95
God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
Under His wings of protection and our consistent refuge, God assures us that He will never leave us.
Deuteronomy 31:8 NASB95
“The Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
Our moms are the same.
They specialize in caring for our needs, ensuring we are protected and healthy.
They make sure you're fed.
They ensure you are clothed.
They put themselves at risk to care for us when we are sick.
They ensure you have taken your medicine.
They are constantly by our side when we need them.
The list goes on and on…
Thank you mom’s for being a place of safety!

Mom’s are Kind and Tender

God’s love is gentle; so much so, He uses birds and flowers to illustrate His gentle care and love.
Matthew 6:25–28 NASB95
“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? “And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? “And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin,
God understands that we are often weak and sometimes unable to do things for ourselves. So, He reminds us with tenderness and kindness, like the small bird and delicate flower He will provide for us.
Moms are much the same way. We can go to them with our hurts and problems. They seek ways to help us and are often tender and kind during our times of need.
Thank you, moms, for your kindness and tenderness toward us.

A Mom’s Love Never Ends

The Bible tells us that God’s love cannot be exhausted, and nothing can stop God from loving us.
Rom 8:35, 38-39
Romans 8:35 NASB95
Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Romans 8:38–39 NASB95
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
God’s love for you is not dependent on what you are able to offer Him.
He loved you before you were ever born.
He loves you despite your sin.
God loves you so much that He died for you.
1 John 4:19 NASB95
We love, because He first loved us.
Just like God’s never-ending love toward us, a mom’s love is everlasting and inextinguishable.
No matter what a child does, a mom’s love never changes.
If a child passes away, a mom still loves that child as if they are still alive.
If a child goes missing, a mom will expend her energy until her last breath to find that child.
Mom’s love knows no end.
Thank you, moms, for showing us a love without end!
Before we conclude today, I want to officially recognize all of our moms here this morning.
If you are able, please stand. We love you, and Happy Mother’s Day!
Let’s pray.
