I think you know by now that I am not your conventional pastor.
I don’t typically do the special sermon days, such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, etc.
But this year something different happened; this year I felt led to speak on mothers.
I did not have a typical childhood.
My father was murdered while she was three months pregnant.
My mom was 17 years old a widow and a single mom.
So life was a little different for us. Sometimes Mama worked two and three jobs to make ends meet.
Had it not been for my grandparents we would have really struggled...way more than we actually did.
With the help of family and friends and a God that we did not believe in at the time; we made it. Somehow we made it.
Mama was not a believer until later in her life:
so we didn’t sit around the read The Bible.
We didn’t pray.
We didn’t go to church.
I didn't have that Christian home experience.
So let's talk about that Christian home experience.
I believe the kids today need this more than ever.
The world that we live in has gotten so crazy.
Sin is rampant.
People are disobedient and rebellious.
If there ever was a time when people needed Jesus, It is now.
The sad fact is, most kids today are not getting that Christian home experience. But it is desperately, desperately needed.
A Godly Mother’s Day
A Godly Mother’s Day
A day in the life of a godly mother
“These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.
“You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
This instruction is for parents, mothers (and fathers). God is commanding parents to hide His word in their hearts. And then to teach that word to their children. It is up to us to teach them how to live. It is up to us to teach them about God.
I can promise you they will not get this at school. They will not get this at college. They will not get this in the workplace. And we only get them for an hour or two a week at church. So where will they learn about God?
At home. By their parents (or grandparents)
When are we to teach our children?
When you sit in your house. During our leisure time, family time.
When you walk by the way. During our working time.
When you lie down. Before bedtime.
When you rise up. At morning time.
That sounds like all day to me.
A godly mother's day will include teaching your children about God.
His word
His law, his commandments
How to live, how to love.
If godly mothers will spend their day, teaching their children about Jesus about God, they will influence their children beyond imagine.
We have looked at a godly mothers day...now lets look at a godly mothers sway.
A Godly Mothers Sway
A Godly Mothers Sway
For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.
For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.
Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God,
The Bible doesn’t say anything about Paul having actual children of his own, but he refers to Timothy as his child of the faith, his son in the faith.
I believe the reason why Timothy was such a powerful ally to Paul and such a man of God were because of two things, his mother and his grandmother.
These godly women spent their day teaching Timothy about God as they sat around their house as they walked by the way as they lie down, and as they arose.
Look at the impact these two women had on this man’s life. God molded him and shaped him into a pastor and I believe this was because of his mothers and a grandmothers sway.
These two women had a huge influence on Timothys life. So much so that Paul knew about it. Paul could see their faith. He could see their witness. He could see the INLFUENCE (sway) that these women had on the life of young Timothy.
Can people look at your children and see your godly influence?
Now let me stop right here just a minute. My wife reminded me this morning about how tought this day is for some women.
For 20 years...we endured mothers day.
When we first got married… “When are you going to have babies?” WHen are you going to give me some grandchildren?
After about 6-7 years those questions die down a bit. Then its just awkward. Then people talk about it behind our backs.
It took 20 years for us to enjoy mothers day...and even then it was tough for me. Because mom died the year before we adopted Ella.
And then you have women who tried their best with their kids and they still turned out different. Disobedient. Rebellious, Sinful, Shameful.
So I understand that this day is not wine and roses for some. (That’s probably one of the reasons why I don’t like doing these special day sermons.)
I want to share two things with you that may help put this day back on track for some of you.
God does not call us to be successful, He calls us to be obedient.
This advice was given to me pertaining to my evangelistic efforts with my grandpa. No matter how hard I tried to talk to him, he would not listen.
So mother’s if you have tried to be a godly mother, but it fell on deaf ears...You have to leave that burden with God.
It is never too late to be influential.
While we leave the ultimate results to God...we can still keep trying. I led my grandfather to the Lord 11 days before he died. That dude went to heaven with the singe of Hellfire on his person. That is how close he came. Right on the edge.
While there is breath, there is hope.
So keep on influencing.
Speak Truth
Speak Life
Speak Jesus.
And if it is too late for the children, influence those grandchildren.
The most influential person in my life...was my Nanny. My grandma.
My Mama taught me life. Nanny taught me love.
She influenced me by the way she dealt with my hateful unsaved grandfather. He was Whiskey bent and Hell bound.
She was tender and compassionate and content.
She had sway.
I will say this. I believe that God used my salvation to influence my whole family for Christ.
But God used this precious woman to teach me love.
We have seen what a godly mothers day looks like, And we have seen the impact of a godly mothers sway.
A Godly Mothers Pay
A Godly Mothers Pay
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
“Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all.”
When you exalt Jesus in your own life you will influence those around you. And your reward will be great.
Because even if your kids will not rise up and bless you...Our Father who is in Heaven will say to you one day...Well done, thy Good and Faithful servant.
