There are various thoughts and interpretations about God’s love. Some believe God loves us regardless of what we do. Others believe God is vindictive or often demonstrates hatred towards humanity which is evident by the existence of suffering and evil. Today, I want to explore this topic to test if the Bible teaches about God’s love and whether He loves everyone or He loves some and hates others.

Introduction

There are various thoughts and interpretations about God’s love. Some believe God loves us regardless of what we do. Others believe God is vindictive or often demonstrates hatred towards humanity which is evident by the existence of suffering and evil. Today, I want to explore this topic to test if the Bible teaches about God’s love and whether He loves everyone or He loves some and hates others.

What does God say?

How did God identify His character? (Ex 3:14; Ex 34:6-7)
Exodus 3:14 ESV
God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”
Exodus 34:6–7 ESV
The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
The words of Jesus (Matthew 5:43-44; Lk 14:26)
Matthew 5:43–44 ESV
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Luke 14:26 ESV
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
God’s love towards humanity (John 3:16; Romans 5:6-10; 1 John 4:7-10)
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 5:6–10 ESV
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
1 John 4:7–10 ESV
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
God’s Hatred (Romans 9:13)

Romans 9:13 ESV
As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”
This passage is in the context of election between Israel and Edom. For us it is salvation/condemnation

What Do You Say Considering the Scriptures?

God character: Self existent, merciful, gracious, patient, faithful, loving, forgiving, and just
The ultimate demonstration of God’s love is the giving of His Son Jesus, who love is demonstrated by dying for the unrighteous to have an opportunity to receive salvation through faith.
God hates wickedness; therefore because He is just, He punishes (wrath) those who are evil
