Ex 1:22–2:10
22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.”
2 Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. 2 The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. 3 When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank. 4 And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. 5 Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it. 6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” 8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”

Title of the Message is “People Makers: Lessons from Motherly Love”

I will always love my mother because my mother loved me first.

Unknown potential.
Incapable to deliver.

THIS IS MORE PRECIOUS TO ME TODAY BECAUSE I FEEL THAT MORE AND MORE WE LIVE IN A WORLD OF CALCULATED LOVE.

Affection based on ability.
Compassion based on performance.
Emotion based on merit.

In this kind of world, a love that just loves is a threat.

Maternal love is the model
Motherhood is under attack
Extinguish the example

Perhaps you’ve seen how maternal love has come under attack.

Abortion from unfortunate choice to a celebrated right of passage.
An economy that welcomes women into the workforce with no guaranteed family leave, insufficient maternity support, bogus healthcare coverage, and zero affordable, high-quality child-care options.

In that pressures us on every side to choose self-preservation over sacrifice…to close our eyes to injustice, to keep our heads down, to say, “Well, that’s not my problem.”, I say we need to learn some lessons from motherhood.

In a world where power says, “Crush them,” motherly love says, “Cover them.”
In a culture where power says, “Throw them away,” motherly love says, “Find a way.”
In a time where power says, “Cut them off,” motherly love says, “Take them in.”

I think Moses felt about his mother the way I feel about my mother. I think Moses thought about motherhood the way I think about motherhood…not just as a relationship between a woman and a child, but as an institution that can save a people.

In Exodus, Moses gives us his origin story.
“For all you have recieved from me, you have these women to thank.”
But it’s not just his story. It’s a story about how God uses the love of mothers to resist oppression, protect life, and preserve the people of God.

Jochebed – Motherly Love Resists When There’s No Reward (Exodus 2:1–3)

She saw he was a fine child” [Hebrew Idiom] = “She wanted him”
Jochebed was not hiding Israel’s deliverer. She was hiding her baby.

Miriam – Motherly Love Shepherds When Its Not Safe (Exodus 2:4–7)

Miriam was about 12 years old (old enough to watch, but young enough to want to do other things).
She could have gotten in trouble…mistaken for working age girl skipping out on tasks
She could not predict Pharaoh’s daughter’s response to her inserting herself.
She advocated for Moses even at her own risk.

Pharaoh’s Daughter – Motherly Love Welcomes Even It’s Wrong (Exodus 2:5–10)

She used her privilege, position and resources to protect a child she was TOLD TO HATE.
Multi-ethnic, intergenerational, and multi-cultural revival.

Beloved, the question for us today is not just, “What did these women do?” but “What will we do?”

THE ENEMY WANTS TO DESTORY GENERATIONS…WE NEED MOTHERS…AND WE NEED A MOVEMENT OF CHRISTIANS WHO LEARN THE LESSONS AND LOVE THIS WAY.
