Cracking the Medical Myth
It's going to look.
I'm going to put this down to the church.
We are going to be recording the next several sessions, or however many we have left. So if you would like a copy, the starting to the ones today, through the end of the end of the last week's, I will not be available autobiographical, and the goal was to share a little bit.
And that story was mostly just for the family. And so anyone that wants one sit here, if you need to get a chance and I'll send you a link to it wasn't intended for General Tso. We will. Briefly recap. Last week. So, the central thesis of biblical counseling, is that the Bible is sufficient, level is sufficient for the difficulties of life. For the things that we faced with a problem that we run into this, as mental health, that the Bible is a, what is a better resource for those things, then what secular therapy and secular psychology, and we're going to dive into that a little bit more this week.
This is what I had up on the screen last week, but it wasn't. I thought. So very presuppositional. A Biblical counseling. Is that every essential truth? Every essential principle, every essential technique for solving human problems,
Exploring. So again as I said last week, I'm I am not, I have no kids learning and I'm excited and I'm excited to bring it to you. So there are absolutely aspects of this that I have not personally done, Deep dive research on too. And so that's the purpose of the lights. The brightest 10,000-plus. Do you know review to ask some questions to to raise some raisin categories. But not to not to deliver. It's an overview. And again, if you are interested in hearing from those who have done more research who have experienced a lot of training, having that intro to biblical counseling course in the fall, and it's available now and that'll be three weekends over three months in the falls in September and October than weekend in November. I'm retarded about that would be good for each and everyone of us.
Do three bold plan to be diving into this one a little bit more today. Do the three bold claims that we're going to be exploring or that most matters that are popularly. Consider matters of mental. Health are not primarily brain problems. Last week, they use the term Medical but we're primarily looking at the brain problems.
A fine. We're going to be looking a little bit more today has therefore or is that the Bible contains everything needed to live a life pleasing to God and not necessarily involved in the state of my mind.
Bible clearly explains that contain everything we needed to live a life pleasing to God there. For the Bible must contain what is needed to deal with the problems of the Mind. Those are our planes were going to be looking at in defending exploring elements of each of those things for the next 4 weeks. I did want to real quick. I didn't reflect last week to a level for a long time over that story for that she's doing and I just a brace and the help of many people and the purpose of the story that I told last week was the highlight that that each has about what I'm doing. I've seen that when you faced difficulties like that, What is, what is needed in the essential gossip with needed us to come to know our savior.
The Best Buy. So,
All right. So real quick. There's some things. I'm going to talk a lot about the
Circular therapy and psychology and I've got some Saxon different things, but I did want to. Recently, I just cover a couple of things that make sure that there's a few misunderstandings of thoughtful, although I'm sure I will cross them anyway. So and by the way, I'm going there are questions or clear or if there's anything that you have got it, I'm going to stay sitting in for questioning but
So I just want to clarify that, we're going to challenge that label mental health a little bit or and rethink if that's the conditions that meant that are generally. I am not suggesting that those things exist. PTSD diagnostic manual for mental health and they are there symptoms that we see those are those are real or not questioning whether or not those those things are real by and large.
What should we do about them?
oh, and on that one into, we're mostly not talking about our brains Or mostly not talking about Alzheimer's, or dementia or traumatic. Brain injury rehab physical issues with the brain. And the biblical counseling is not primarily games at those things.
We have joy in the midst of those things to me.
And so that's the dumb Springs, assuming the board and distinction. The mind's not the brain biblically Bible talks about and those things generally speaking or are synonyms. Mostly Muscle X using scriptures referring to the same thing and that is a person who we are separate from our physicality. I could, I could open up my soul and touch my brain. If I wanted to not a good idea, but I could
But I can't do that with my mind. My mind is material, not a physical thing.
And one white dresses batshit issues of our of our, of our mind to do so, throughout scripture and it. And that's the part is dress in the Bible is mostly not addressing issues of physical help with brain. Health comes up here and there but the most part but when the Bible is talking about these issues, if those categories. And so we need to understand then that one of the physical components, we have a spiritual component. and so, the brain in the mines,
Remind snail affect our bodies. We see that in different places throughout scripture. But Psalm 32, this David is talking about about his sins, and he's talking about power of the soul of the Inner, Man, neither of his conscience, that's affecting his fist and didn't physically Silence about mice in my body. Wasted away through my groaning. All day long for day and night. Your hand was Heavy upon me. My Vitality was drained away, is with the fever heat of Summer.
Luke, we see the description of Jesus himself, who is in The Garden of Gethsemane, in this, under bright distress about to face on the cross, not affect him physically to the degree where he is sweating blood.
Remind can effect and affect the body of ways in which we understand that that matters of of our attitude of our Outlook or hope enjoying all these thieves and effects. Infected physically and then go the other way. Brain can affect the mind. Now we just one is substances as the last and bites like a serpent, things like a Viper, your eyes will see, strange things in your mind, your mind.
Substance can alter the your brain chemistry and alter the way that your brain is perceiving the world and effects. The way, the yard later lines, it was one of the reasons why the Bible is.
so, these conditions are complex example of this is, but if you have lack of sleep, then that's going to affect your outlook, it's going to affect your decision-making that extreme cases of spending affect your ability to function.
Somerset, the health of your brain and lack of sleep and absolutely affects the state of your mind.
all of these additions, all these things are are complex and a little counseling is not suggesting As we're seeing here that all the problems that we face in life, all these things are kind of Mental Health.
Where this we are suggesting that the essential doors for these things. Spiritual.
Example.
But he must be staying. There has been so much research done on this but are familiar with the effects of of
And we got to stand, that's, that's that's engaging with that enslavement, that's what that content affects our brain. Don't stand. So you can see how it affects the brain by the permanent or semi-permanent way and reroutes neurons and it can affect the way that the brain functions. And so this is a Cindy shoe gauging in an illicit sexual. Not, you're not to be participating in. We can see the bed soon as you house has effects on the body. Getting free of that enslaved. I'm not diction difficult, make a really far as if you've been in that habit for a long time.
but we would not say then that that just because that that that addiction when I didn't play much that has physical
since you no longer a spiritual problem, we would not say that God evaluating us says, that's so
From here on out. It's no longer distance. I can hold them accountable for that because because he's in slaves, do it then. So because it doesn't
Stomach sounds.
All right.
On the board.
This is the myth cracking medical myth. Mental health has been proven to be a medical EQ and therefore requires medical solution.
And probably other ways like you could phrase this, but that's the general topic that we're addressing that. This is a medical solution. And my goal here is not to exhaustively destroy this argument, but so my goal here isn't is not even to convince you if you are skeptical of this, one of my goal here is not stew. So exhaustively proved that. This is a breakfast but it's it's too. It's the crack the door on it if I want to at least raise a question. And hopefully by the end of this you'll be willing to at least ask them. Say yeah it is worth considering whether or not
So the goal is to raise the question and take it seriously. And if you ever after that about the questions and raised, if you would like to pursue it for her, I have shelves.
They will have to class in the fall to reach my goal so that's the Met Mental Health.
I bet we're just talked about this one and we have a serious. We have a series of facts. An overall roasting X. We look at the big picture, what's going on with mental health, even just in our country. And the way that that the secular treatments are Korean versus how that's going. The difficulties that shoot at least raise some eyebrows. We should be willing to say, is what we're doing actually actually hoping or we are we making things worse? Or is it just not helping at all this? But again as we said before, I sent them something to help them at the health industry, tends to drink those things. Generally speaking symptoms are real.
Fax number to bees are not new things. Just because we have new labels for them, does not make them new condition examples of things that look an awful lot of things that we would say all that's interesting. Weary label all of this now but there is
It shouldn't surprise us because again, this is the book that is written by the the person who made us.
The story of human history, the story of how people have been have.
These are not new things.
some of the, some of the
or not, it was called something else.
So yeah, that's been then we can do that.
However, the therapeutic psychiatric solution model is relatively them. We'll talk a little bit more about this in a few minutes, but But this solution model is new. This is a new idea.
What was the new idea relatively speaking? Additions are old. but these labels and and the various treatment plan however in the series in the models of those things have been dominance, The problem of mental health has gotten worse, not better, distinct from physical help, come up with cures for think there are things in droves to worry about it except aren't around or are very manageable.
There's things that we can you surgically and and medical that before you were was over. If you lost your legs.
In general, like there's there's things we can do with all kinds, of all kinds of ways, we can help people that have serious medical conditions when it comes to Modern therapy. Some trend for me, And again I'm not claiming the notes and help but nothing is that? No, good has come out of this at all or that the people involved in this industry or are evil people at all. Why enlarged to address a serious problem? So, I'm not questioning the motivations all people involved.
Well, you'll see.
but we may expect to see those as research improves just like most things in our Modern Age that we get better 8s and it does not seem to Bear out So just be easier just to grab bag of stats. I got these from from two different sources. You can look them up. Some of these are depending on what source, you go to. The numbers will be a little bit different. But from 2018 to 2019 the number of adults to be increased from 39.8 million to 51.5 is 30%.
Similar time, span this year of high school students, who reported experiencing persistent, feeling this persistent feeling of sadness. Or who played Ephraim? Did you buy safety 2017? 2021 suicide attempt.
I think I could continue on.
The number of your supposed to receive mental focus old numbers, that that demonstrate that the research on your own, the numbers are are increasing and decreasing, increasing, the there are wide, right? If you lie in our nation, people might be coming more the stress, and it might be more concerned that I might be more mental health issues. There's all kinds of ideas and theories in the Bible has something to say that make a lot of sense, but but the fact that it's getting worse, while our people who are receiving mental health treatment,
the measuring the way that they measure the statistics on the number of these studies change that
I didn't deep dive onto exactly what the methodology change was, but
Sources on this. I had a hard time nailing this one down, but the general Trend was similar route, different number of Americans, on psychotropic drugs that were Consulting, nothing's wrong, things others, put it closer to 1 and 4.
Go back and look a little bit more at all of this in a few minutes.
but, The question of this song.
Is is why if we have so much more availability has more money for research number of therapists working in the field, is off the charts. To let that. I think that, that whole job feels he's bigger and bigger and bigger, more and more people are going to work on that field.
But I thought that was an interesting, but there's many, many tens of thousands of people to do to get worse.
At least crazy question. We actually addressing this in a way that is actually, you should at least be willing to reconsider if we've been thinking about this issue.
Next to the Braum's in the staffs next, we have some problems in the Diagnostics, the way, the Diagnostics are done. I talked a little bit about this last week and my own Journey with Amanda visiting psychologist and psychiatrist and counselors,
This is pretty well known these days as probably won't be surprising to anyone. But mental health. Disorders are overwhelmingly self-reported and symptom base the diagnostic the diagnosis. It
Mess up your the doctor and they see that you have a fever.
But what if they wanted to? A good protest. You've got just over the years when I was recovering from the flu and they ran it stick and look at it.
against setting aside brain diseases from Mental health. It was snowing all of these other disorders that that's not the case. There's no test no, you can go and do. Engine. Sometimes those sting symptoms can be caused by medical things. So, if you are diagnosed with generalized, anxiety disorder.
So if I'm chugging caffeine 24/7, I have six Red Bull for breakfast. I'm going to feel a lot of pain. So I know if I had that much caffeine
depression is another one when we went to New psychiatrist to synthetic Sports symptoms were affecting her and
The tests we can do anything. We can figure out is this genetic?
99% sure that was what was behind a lot of depression, but you said, it's probably not going to be related to dealing with.
I was really discouraging because I until that point, I had to sort of been under the impression that that this industry is field of medical research.
We actually understood these things a lot.
But it turns out that almost everything in that DSM book, that that diagnostic manual for mental health. It's just like it, but if it's something based on symptoms, based on self-reporting. So today, if you want,
Getting up at 5. YouTube. You can tell them that you've been feeling down in the dumps or more than two weeks that it's affecting your ability to go to work, and they will die. And the last few Expressions your stories, straight the wheel to go in there and tell that story.
Young people, but I but I could go in there and I can do that this week if I want to have to lie. But that's exactly what happened on. The example of that is going to go to your appointment. Now days, I've seen A lot more often. Feel like that? Yep. Yep. I've been to the doctor anytime recently than you'll know if that's part of the offer signs of danger boat The farm cheese, I really like that. They want to get out of it but yeah but that's the way their diagnosis. So from
There's nothing to be diagnosed with depression. A person have must must have symptoms, most of the day. Although several persistent symptoms in addition to loan, you are required for a depression, diagnosis and frequency of symptoms. And how long they last movie Harry from
Benjamin oppression, Parker healthcare provider down the way a little bit. It's a rule out these possibilities by doing a physical exam interview. So they receive are called.
It's when they when they can rule those things out, that we moved to a mental health. Science can't explain your symptoms by a lack of sleep, is shoot by some kind of medical brain injury by some kind of taking medicine.
Like a week miliar with a list of symptoms of anxious or empty mood, dealing with the lower-tier of depression. The lowest here. Also, this year of depression, that's just your General ER others. But General, General depression or generalizing depressive disorder is
my volume.
We should concern us because then we were interacting with with a wide variety of drugs and treatments and things that that are not that are not fighting.
Another problem.
Is that are skewed by person. Listen to affect those who are genuinely out to take advantage of people. Those people access the working to the National Institute of Health over half of the psychiatrist,
I'm so glad, I'm not sure if you buy the 800,000 payments worth hundred and ten million dollars to 26,000 psychiatrist,
I could be nothing that could be in a lot, bro. Refuel at 1. And like a lot of other questionable areas in the money is not made.
So then it's just all the research medicine that treat the symptoms.
if they listen to their better angels and rise above that, that's
There's a person sent him to move that direction also in in schools and I hope you have a good spot behind her. Is having some issues at school.
People that are doing this problem, but can only get paid by insurance companies. if they diagnose you, So, when I went to a counselor, but I'm going to diagnose you with this. but don't you know that we're not really going to talk about that label from you ever again, because it
but money was, but she was pretty transfer about the fact that I do to make it easier to
Do diagnostics are not can't, you can't take a microscope and look at stuff under the lab and determined that you have this figured out that he might have been sitting still and you don't know how you figure out.
Because you're saying there's a shooting for a cure.
Is that possible? So,
my dad's. So what is that large?
if they found a cure and sell it considered wood, but reactive.
And and it's in the symptoms are going to last for a long time were or maybe he's definitely and medication.
I'm not liking this Saturday.
Medication. But no, I'm not. So yesterday be working towards
The organization to make a diet that is primarily a matter of the heart, matter of the mine. And there are physical components to it, like the brain is involved in this thing. So there is and so, so yes, why The best of my knowledge there has not been a medication, that's been developed for these. Call Miss for other stuff that we've discovered along the way are hopeful for some reason. The main Siri for a long time was that they were serotonin and a golden giant Minnesota.

That's why, that's why I believe the Bible has all the answers. Are they, where are they?
And we will look more specifically with
Trial and error.
It's it's it's, it's concerning.

And then so startled that there's a, there's an idea that tough that it's popular in the late 1800s.

One thing that is that is consistent through a number of these early early attempts is that if you are dealing with some kind of severe mental illness, has severe severe severe depression that if you're dealing with one of those things around with the street. And so when they Jack people insulin to induce a coma or when they infected you with malaria and very unsafe levels, or when they literally started fighting body parts, Because they were.

Idea here is that we can just identify the part of the brain is not functioning correctly. That's, I don't know exactly what was going on. If you were a concert pianist, or if you were a doctor or a researcher,
I'm grateful that my wife ex-wife and cheese.
A lot of issues here and the thing that that connects the dots are all of these. Is that we have you have a researcher or group of researchers, that would get an idea and it wasn't always terrible idea of logic again.
I love this happen again before all this modern loss, but you did a person that success has had a little bit of medical challenge.
