Lady of Influence: Mary
In human history, Christians have fallen into two extremes when it comes to Mary mother of Jesus.
Some to high: Making shrines and praying to her.

R. Kent Hughes: wrote and captured the balance. He said Mary was the only woman of the billions who have inhabited our planet who was chosen to carry and nurse God's son for that we must call her blessed. The Savior bore some of her human features, Jesus face could be seen in her face, think of it, she's blessed indeed and just because others have thought too much of her, we must not imagine that our Lord is pleased when we think too little of her, we as part of the subsequent Christian Generations are to call her blessed.
Mary mother of Jesus
According to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, Mary was a young, poor, virgin betrothed to Joseph.
Mary: Lady of Influence was not her plan.
God's plan for your life is greater than your plan for your life.
God might change your plan over and over again. But will you say yes Lord as He leads and guides you.
Mary was chosen by God.
Luke 1:28–29 NIV
28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
Why was she troubled / confused / perplexed
Why me? Out of all of the women in human history. Me? Favored.
Luke 1:30–33 NIV
30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
She was told his gender before conception.
Jesus name means Jehovah saves. - Messiah.

He will be great -
Luke 1:34–35 NIV
34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
This is impossible.
Mary answered the call even though it was not the plan she had for her life.
Luke 1:38 NIV
38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
Did notice that she did not argue?
Then she had to tell her soon to be husband.
She gave birth
Luke 2:5–7 NIV
5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
They took him to the temple
Luke 2:22–24 NIV
22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”
After that she was to offer a year-old lamb and a dove or pigeon (Lev. 12:6). If poor, she could offer two doves or pigeons (Lev. 12:8). Mary’s offering indicates that she and Joseph were poor.
Luke 2:25–28 NIV
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
Luke 2:29–32 NIV
29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.”
Luke 2:33–35 NIV
33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
Great what does that mean? What now?
Magi came (age 2) are now gone we can settle into our home and life
Matthew 2:13–15 NIV
13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” 14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
Raising Jesus had its challenges. Not much is written.
Luke 2:41–43 NIV
41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it.
Luke 2:44–45 NIV
44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.
You miss placed the Son of God? / I was lost once.
Luke 2:46–47 NIV
46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.
Luke 2:48 NIV
48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
Can you hear Mary’s disappointment?
Luke 2:49–50 NIV
49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
Luke 2:51 NIV
51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.
Honor your father and mother.
Mary prompts his first miracle.
John 2:1–2 NIV
1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
John 2:3–4 NIV
3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” 4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
John 2:5–6 NIV
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
Mary had to recognize Him not so much as a son that she raised, but as the promised Messiah and Son of God
John 2:11 NIV
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
She was there at two of the greatest days in human history. His birth and there at the end.
John 19:25 NIV
25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
The prophecy of Simeon was fulfilled—the sword pierced through her soul.
Did Mary see similarities of two of the greatest days in human history?
I watched His tiny fingers curl around mine, not knowing those same hands would stretch wide on a cross.
The manger and the cross… Wood cradled Him both times. First as a gift to the world—Then as an offering for it.
John 19:26 NIV
26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,”
Did Mary ever get to see Jesus as the risen Christ? Not recorded in the Scriptures.
