1 Peter 2:21–25 “21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”

Despair

Intro (v.21):

1 Peter 2:21 “21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.”

For for this you were called because also Christ suffered in your behalf, leaving behind for you a writing-copy in order that you may follow his tracks—

Your calling to (serve and) suffer
Audience: Peter is speaking to mistreated slaves/servants.
Christ’s suffering for you is the reason for your calling to (serve and) suffer
He suffered instead of you/on your behalf
It was your suffering that He suffered for your benefit
Not just your EXAMPLE but for your EXPIATION
taking away your guilt by atonement
1 Peter 3:18 “18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,”
The Example of Christ in (serving and) suffering. He left this example behind for you to imitate & follow:

A track to follow

Four Demonstrative relatives…

Not just “he” but emphasized “He, the One who…”
(v.22) He, the One who… did not sin
1 Peter 2:22 “22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.”

he the One who did not do sin, neither was guile found in his mouth;

Isaiah 53:9 “9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.”
Never lied. Didn’t commit blasphemy as accused. All the Gospel records agree.
(v.23) He, the One who…committed himself
1 Peter 2:23 “23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.”

he the One who, being reviled, kept not reviling in turn; suffering, kept not threatening but kept committing (himself) to the One judging righteously;

Isaiah 53:7 “7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.”
(v.24a) He, the One who…carried our sins
1 Peter 2:24 “(24a) He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness…. ”

he the One who his own self carried up our sins in his body on the wood in order that, having ceased to exist for the sins, we may live for righteousness;

Isaiah 53:6 “6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
Carried/lifted up as a sacrifice - liturgical term
Leviticus 14:20 “20 And the priest shall offer the burnt offering and the grain offering on the altar. Thus the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be clean.”
James 2:21 “21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar?”
John 1:29 “29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
John 1:36 “36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!””
The Shame
Galatians 3:13 “13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—”
Deuteronomy 21:23 “23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.”
(v.24b) He, the One who…healed you with his wounds
1 Peter 2:24 “(24b)… By his wounds you have been healed.”

he the One with whose stripes you were healed!

Isaiah 53:5 “5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.”
Concluding Comfort: (v. 25)
1 Peter 2:25 “25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”
Isaiah 53:6 “6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
