Good morning family, Happy Mothers Day to all our wonderful mothers. Our reading today will come from Genesis 2 as well as the Gospel of John 14. Today I would like to talk about 7 roles of a godly mother or a godly wife using the Greek term “Parakletos.” This word describes the role and function of the Holy Spirit, the 2nd person of the God Head Trinity In His relationship to believers. This same role God designated for the Holy Spirit is the same role God designated to mothers.
Before we read, let us invite the Holy Spirit into our fellowship this morning.
Please turn with me to Genesis 2
Before we read the Scripture, allow me to share a story about my own mother. Growing up my mother shared with me and my two sisters that she said she was bail us out of jail one time, but after that we were on our own. One time of being in bad trouble is all we get.
When I was 19 or 20 years old, I got pulled over by the police for passing on a double yellow line, a no passing zone. I was passing a car as the car was turning right. I went around the car, and when I passed the car, I broke the double yellow line. I did not know the police was behind me, so when I passed the car, the police pulled me over and gave me a ticket.
If anyone has ever received a police citation, you know you have 30 days to either pay the ticket, or appeal the ticket in court. I had the ticket in my wallet, but I honestly forgot to pay it (I forgot about the ticket).
Our neighbor was a member of the police department, my neighbor didn’t give me the ticket, but my neighbor did come to my house and arrest me. Our neighbor was a friend of the family, and when he came to the house to arrest me, he asked me about the ticket, and told me he was at my house to arrest me for a bench warrant. I missed the day to pay the ticket.
I called my mother, and my mother met me at the police station. She posted my bail, and the next day I was paying for the ticket, the bail, and the bench warrant.
When my mother posted by bail, not only did she demonstrate her help toward me, her love for me was demonstrated in her willingness to stand by me in a difficult time.
When we read from Genesis 2 and the Gospel of John 14, there are 7 attributes that define the role of a godly mother which corresponds to the role Holy Spirit are Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, one who Stands by you.
The role of a godly mother is something that is part of her DNA, it’s her nature to do these things. Just as the role of a father is to protect and provide, the role of a godly mother or godly wife is to be a comfort, counsel, help, advocate, intercede, strengthen, and someone to stand by you no matter what.
When we examine the life of a believer, and the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer, the Holy Spirit the person that governs our lives. When we say the Holy Spirit governs the life of a believer, this means the Holy Spirit influences how we make decisions, and our decisions is what guides our daily lives.
The Holy Spirit guides how we make decisions and influences these decisions based on God’s word.
When we read Genesis 2, the woman is given to Adam is given to help him govern the decisions made according to the well-being of the family and all that God has given to Adam to govern.
Now turn with me to Genesis 2: 18-23 And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
When we read Genesis 2, God is giving Adam the divine power and authority over the earth, and all living beings that dwell on the earth to govern them. God is giving Adam the authority to command all living beings according to His will. Adam is naming all living beings, and by giving them a name, God is giving Adam power and authority over these living beings.
If we pay close attention to verse 18, God is teaching us that it is not good that Adam be the sole authority over the earth, but he will need help in governing these living beings. God is teaching us, there is be a point in time that Adam is going to need someone to be a comfort, counselor, helper, advocate, intercessor, strengthener, and someone to stand by him. There is coming to time that Adams family will need a mother that will endure the test of time, and support their children no matter what. Adam is going to need a god-fearing wife and a godly mother to help influence how he makes decisions. He is going to need someone who will share life with Him through the darkest of days.
21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”
While it is true the man is the one who is responsible for the well-being of the family, the woman, by design of God, is given to the man to govern how he makes those decisions.
Now lets compare the 7 attributes that define the role of a godly mother which corresponds to the role Holy Spirit are Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, one who Stands by you
In John 14:25-26 “25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
We know from previous conversations, that John 14 is part of the last conversation Jesus has with His 12 apostles, and after this conversation, 10 days later is the day of Pentecost, and the Day of Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit reveals Himself. Jesus is reassuring HIs 12 apostles that God is not going to leave them without help, and even though they do not understand now, soon they will. In 10 days, when the Holy Spirit comes, the Holy Spirit will reveal to the 12 apostles the teachings of Jesus, and elaborate more and more on the Scripture.
What Jesus is telling the apostles, when the Holy Spirit comes, they will be strengthened in their faith as the Holy Spirit comes to reassure them of God’s presence in their lives.
Lets take a look at the role of being strengthened by the Holy Spirit as well as a godly wife.
Isaiah 40:31 But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah is teaching us if we will be patient, knowing God will see to our needs, and rest in the fact God will never leave us nor forsake us, we will see God’s presence at the appropriate time. When God’s presence fill our lives, His presence is what gives us the ability to carry on, He gives us the supernatural energy, and His presence is what strengthens us to continue to fight a good fight of faith.
There are many times in life we fight in our own strength, our own power, and we get tired very fast. When we lose our stamina we need to replenish our strength. When God replenishes our strength, this is when we can run and not be weary, walk and not be faint.
How can a godly mother or a godly wife strengthen her husband and children?
Proverbs 31: 10 Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. 11 The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good and not evil All the days of her life.
The word word “virtuous” is a word used to define value. The values of a godly wife is far about any material possession. The reason this is true is her ability to make wise decisions, or her ability to strengthen the integrity of her husband and family is priceless.
When the husband knows he can trust in his wife, and his wife has his absolute best interest at heart then their family is emotionally strong. The reason the family is strong is because the strength of the father is found in the support of the wife, and when the children see the father and mother in unity, this unity provides the emotional identity the children need to mature in life.
The role of the Holy Spirit is also our advocate
1 John 2:1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
The term Advocate is a legal word describing someone who knows how to argue the Law. Think of being on trial, and the lawyers are arguing your guilt or innocence. The lawyers know the law, they know how to interpret the law, and one is arguing your innocent while the other is arguing your guilt.
Satan is always arguing against us in the courtroom of Heaven, and the Holy Spirit is always arguing in our defense, pleading the blood of Jesus over us.
When we talk about the role of a godly mother as our advocate
Proverbs 1:8-9 My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother; 9 For they will be a graceful ornament on your head, And chains about your neck.
Listen to what Proverbs teaches, the instructions of the father and the law of the mother. The term advocate is about knowing and arguing the law, the mother is the law of the house. She is the one that governs the house, and the father is telling the children to obey the law of the mother.
The role of the Holy Spirit is our intercessor
Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
There are times, in our prayer lives, we do not know how to express ourselves, we just say Jesus help me. When say those words repeatedly because that is all we know to say.
The Holy Spirit takes our deep rooted concerns, and speak to God the Father about us in words we cannot express.
The role of a godly mother as our intercessor
How many times our kids did something wrong; they tell momma about it, and momma knows how to best communicate to dad in such a way the kid doesn’t get in trouble.
Can I say it isn’t that momma is trying to protect the kid from being punished, but she knows the heart of the matter sometimes better than dad, and she is trying to protect the integrity of the family.
Mothers are very good at interceding between the children and the fathers.
The role of the Holy Spirit as our Comforter
Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
There are times in life when we just need God’s presence in our lives to reaffirm in us He is still present even though we fall way short of His expectations. When we need Jesus to demonstrate His presence in our lives, Hebrews 4:15 is a verse many of us use to ask Jesus to show up. We need comforting even though we know we are not worthy of it.
When God shows up, even though we have sinned against Him, God lets us know he is still our number fan, our biggest supporter.
The role of a godly mother as comforter
There are times in life we are not looking for the father to fix a problem, but a mother to simply hear our concerns. We don’t want someone to tell us a solution, but simply someone we can complain to.
Mothers are great at not trying to solve a problem, but rather listen in agreement with the challenges our children face. When the mother listens, the child feels like the parent is present with them in their hard times.
The power of presence is where the comfort comes from.
The role of the Holy Spirit as our Counselor
Acts 20:27 For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God.
The counsel of God is the completeness of God’s word. When we spend time reading the Bible, the Holy Spirit guides us through God’s word, revealing to us God’s perfect will for our lives one day at a time.
The role of a godly mother as our counselor
Mothers share their counsel, they are sharing the consequences of our decisions before we make them. Mothers have a instinct about them, they have a certain level of spiritual discernment about children I am not sure fathers possess.
When a child ask advice from the mother, the mother seems to know more about the heart of the question than the father does sometimes.
I want to ask Kathy if she would come up and play something soft.
I began the message with how a mother is a helper as well as a stand by. I want to end with how the Holy Spirit is our stand by. How the Holy Spirit stands by us no matter what.
Romans 8:38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The reason the apostle Paul writes this is because he reflects on the person he was before meeting Jesus, and the man he is today. Paul recognizes salvation belongs completely to the Lord, and regardless of what we might think, do, or say we cannot remove ourselves from the salvation that belongs to the Lord.
Just as my mother came and bailed me out of jail in my youth, Jesus bailed each one of us from out of the prison we can sin. The ransom He paid for our bail was his own death. Jesus died for our sins, to provide a way for us to be forgiven our sins.
As I close in just a moment, I want to ask, have you accepted Jesus Christ as your lord and savior? If not would you like to? As I pray, I want you to pray with me, and ask Jesus to be your strength, advocate, intercessor, comforter, counsel, help, and your stand by. Ask Jesus to be your savior.
Let us pray.
