Introduction
Hello, this is Kenneth, and welcome to Dwell.
Thanks for joining us for today's Dwell Kids Daily.
Thanks for joining us for The Melodic Line for Kids.
For the next few minutes, I invite you to join me as we look to our Great King by opening our hearts to hear from Him through the words of the Bible.
Silence
As we begin, let us remember that God calls His people, young and old, to be still and know that He is God. Let's take a few seconds to calm and quiet our minds, so that we can hear him better.
Opening PrayerLoving Lord, we delight in your counsel. Today, help our hearts be glad as we receive your words. (from Psalm 16:7,9)
Passage
Today our passage is from the book of Proverbs, chapter 2 verses 1-7 (ESV):
My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver, and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity.
Exhortation
The book of Proverbs is a book written from a father to his son. King Solomon, on whom God had bestowed a great deal of wisdom, is passing on wisdom to his son. He says to his son that if he listens to his father’s words he will flourish and have a good life. In our passage, Solomon gives his son eight steps to finding knowledge and wisdom. Let’s look at those steps, and let’s take them in four pairs.
First, if you receive my words and treasure my commands… The one who wants knowledge and wisdom must receive and love Solomon’s instruction. You see, the book of Proverbs was written by the hand of Solomon, but comes from the Spirit of God himself. So when we receive and treasure King Solomon’s words in the book of Proverbs, we are actually receiving and treasuring God’s words.
Solomon continues with a second pair of instructions for finding wisdom and knowledge. He says to make your ear attentive to wisdom and incline your heart to understanding. There are a million lesser things that are begging for our attention, so you have to make your ear attentive, you have to tell your heart where to put its affections. That means you need to tell your ears and heart to ignore distractions. The dDevil doesn’t want you to be wise, so he comes up with flashy things to distract you all the time.
King Solomon goes on saying that we must call out for insight and raise our voice for understanding. Now, this is interesting. Does insight and understanding wander away from us? No, we wander away from them. Have you ever seen a small child get confused in a crowd of people? They see a balloon and they wander after it, only to eventually realize they aren’t near their parents, and they start calling for mom and dad. That’s what this is like. We need to call out and raise our voice for for our good guides, insight and understanding, when we get distracted and wander into Folly.
The final pairing is like hunting for an exceedingly valuable treasure. We need to seek understanding like silver, and search for wisdom as though it were a hidden treasure. Again, foolishness and ignorance are easy to come by, they are everywhere, but the infinitely value of wisdom and knowledge, they can get buried in the clutter of everyday life, and bad habits or careless routines. We need to go on a treasure hunt, and the book of Proverbs is like a map. God is eager to give wisdom to his people, and he has given us his Word so that we can find it and flourish.
Call to Action Let’s take a moment and quietly reflect on today’s passage, and how we might begin to find wisdom and understanding.
Closing Prayer‌ Let’s pray together.
Heavenly Father, you give wisdom to your people in abundance. Fill us with your Spirit so that we might seek it and find it. Help us treasure up your words and set our affections on things that matter. Help us to not be distracted by foolish things. We ask this in Jesus’s name, Amen.
