they want something they already have

they just want it in the wrong way

they want a leader who will save them from trouble and lead them to peace and prosperity

the Judges only ever last a generation

Saul is a failure

a man who wants the world to consider YHWH

what God has put in place, David has respect for

for most of his life, pleasing God and spreading who God is, is David’s focus

even on the run being hunted wrongly by an entire army

David seeks to do the Lord’s will

Following After Man’s Heart

time goes on and he becomes king and even the man after God’s own heart becomes a failure of a leader

2 Sam 11- his heart is in the wrong place

he is neither being led by God nor leading his people as he should

he does an awful thing which leads to death and more death

Application

the highest and the lowest of leaders

no man can take God’s place

we ought to want to have a heart like David’s

but we also need to learn the lesson that the judges and the kings teach

people fail and give in to sin and hurt eachother

God is the only one worth making the ruler of your life

something must rule your life
