Faithful mothers
Children are dismissed to go with Genesis, and also we are looking to have more help in the littles church, so if you are a church member and would be interested in helping please let me know after church. The reason we ask that your a church member, not just for this but for all our youth ministries, is because we want to be able to ensure with a clean conscience you parents, and ultimately the Lord, that we are entrusting the care of that child with someone with sound doctrine and theology of God, and im not saying if your not a member here that you dont have that, but we dont know what you believe, when you go through the membership process we make sure we agree on the essentials, such as saved by grace through faith lest any man boast, the trinity a very essential view of God, baptism and how its symbolic, the Lords supper and more,
There are of course things that are non essentials we can disagree on such as, you think skrillex is the best worship jam while, the other thinks Chris tomlin, or I personally like Christian rap and or you like to sit down during worship while others wanna stand arms to the ceiling. You may like reading ESV while someone else likes NKJV Eschatology views may vary and other smaller things
thats all fine God created us uniquely and different for good reason but on the essential views of God and what the bible clearly tells us about his divine attributes we wanna make sure we agree on that and have a clear consience before the Lord that the children are in good hands and membership is this Churches way of ensuring that .
so if you are a church member or want to begin that process and would like to help connect with me , or karen or text the church member
Happy Mothers day too all of the beloved mothers in here. An honor to be able to share the word with you all this morning, when Pastor asked me to speak on this day I was a bit hesitant knowing the task of leaving the Mothers feeling encouraged and happy, on this day we celebrate you guys felt a bit scary, and for any husband in here you know that is a task not done easily. Im sure youve all heard the saying a happy wife is a happy life!
But I’m confident that the women in the scriptures we read about this morning will do just that. So if you have your bible would you please open them to Exodus Chapter 1 picking up in verse 15 we will begin there.
Where we pick up today Genesis ends and Joseph the previous leader of the isrealites, and the previous Phraroh are both now gone. they have died but they had a good relationship and the last Pharoh trusted Joseph greatly as he was the one who kept the Egytians thriving during a great famine in all of the land because he gotten vision from the Lord to store up food. So much so that all the nations were going to egypt to buy food. Josephs brothers who sold him into slavery have to now go too him and get food. and its where we get the iconc bible verse Genesis 50:20 “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.”
Now the egyptians are still in power over the jews and they are living in the same region together, but with Jospeh gone the new Pharoh is not sure if he can trust the isrealites the Israelites are growing so great in number so the Pharaoh is worried they will grow so large they will overthrow the Egyptians, so he devises this plan to prevent that and thats where we will pick up today.
Exodus 1:15–22 “Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, “When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.” But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?” The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.””
Pray
V15 We see Pharoh telling these two Hebrew midwives specifically and its kind of ironic that the kings name is not mentioned but the midwives who honor God are . Its as if the king cant speak until the midwives get identified quite unfortunate names shiprah and puah, . Nonetheless, they got thier names recorded in scripture and its thought these two were sort of leaders of the other midwives that if he can get these two too listen the rest will all comply with them out of fear or because they will just follow whatever thier leaders tell them to do. Were not sure of how many baby isrealite boys are killed during this time at the hand of midwives
V16 there essentially told to check the gender, and if its a boy kill him. Because if the hebrews were going to rise up agianst the Egyptians it would take a army of men to do that, so Pharoh thinks why dont I just kill all the males then and the girls can live.
V17 But the Midwives feared God if you write in your bible circle, highlight, underline. what a testimony of these fearless women, would that be the testimony of everyone in this room. Not a dreadful fear, but a healthy fear that understands God is far more mighty than any man.
So the first takeaway we will have is the midwives feared the Lord, they cared more about their loyalty to God rather than their loyalty to man and it says God blesses the midwives for that the Hebrew people keep growing so much so that Pharoh knows whatever their doing its not working, So he calls them in and asks the Midwives like look why are you letting the the male children live I thought we had an agreement, and you almost chuckle at the response,
They say the Hebrew women are vigorous they give birth before the midwife can get their, wether thats true or not is true to be found in regions where women do more physical labor they are in less pain during labor and they recover faster, and just coming back from africa seeing how hard the women work out there often carrying baskets on top of thier heads for miles and just always working while the guys just chill on thier motorcycles (botas) all day. I would not doubt it.
the response seems legit enough for pharoh so he dosent pursue the midwives which usally would have ended in a death sentence if caught lying to a king but now Pharoh now sends out a decree too all the land now not just the midwives that if anyone sees a infant Israelite boy they are to be thrown into the nile.
In this day and age we need more women like the midwives who fear the Lord rather than man.
Proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
You may think to yourself, wow im glad we dont have tyrant Pharaohs trying to make us throw our baby boys into the nile. But we do have whats known a the pro-choice movement or planned parent hood whatever they want to call it, we as Christians call it for what it is which is murder of a innocent human life, a defenseless human life, you see the devil is so sick they he took the battle to the womb, this isnt a new concept we see it in the OT when they are sacrificing babies to false god Baaal as a form of worship. There is nothing new under the sun he just revamps, and changed the name of it
where children, who arent even able to speak for themselves to defend for themselves to fight back the one place there post to be safe from the evil of this world
Human life begins at conception. Meaning when The egg is fertilized that is now the beginning of a human life
I read in a article studying for this that reads “Biologists from 1,058 academic institutions around the world assessed survey items on when a human's life begins and, overall, 96% affirmed the fertilization view.”
Yet we still have Around 1500-2500 abortions take place each day
California leads the us in abortions by doing over 300,000 each year
Over 1,038,100 abortions took place in the US alone in 2024
and to close off the world health orginization estimates about 73 million self induced abortions take place worldwide each year. Abortion was the leading cause of death in 2024 more than cars, smoking drinking cancer,
Christian if that dose not make you burn zealously with a righteous indignation then I don’t now what will! It is time to wake up, we must take a stand agasint the gates of hell enough is enough. We are not gonna sit here and watch a human being created in the image of God for a purpose be executed before they ever had a chance to leave the womb! we must defend the defenseless
We don’t care, what that study you read from the woke agenda says about it , we dont care what your co worker says or your friends, or what some holly wood celebrity says . We care what the word of God it says and it
Jeremiah 1:5 ““Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.””
each and every life is valuable, in the sight of God, we must stand up for what is right no matter what culture says.
It is not my intention to bring up such a sad topic today but we as Christians need to be a voice for the voiceless. we are a voice for the 73million children that will never get to meet thier mother on this side of eternity because of abortion . So I charge this Church in the presence of God to take a stand against evil be like the midwives, who do you fear more man or the Lord? Moving forward. verse 1 of chapter 2
Exodus 2:1–3 “Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank.”
V1 So we know from Ex 6 that Moses, mom and dad were named Amram being the dad and Jochebed being the mom they are both levites and his levite heritage is appropriate considering he will lead the Israelites in worship and be there high priest which was the role of the levites so kind of a forseshdaow thier. So they Mary each other, also they had two kids before Moses being Miriam the sister and Aaron the brother.
V2 Moses is born into a very unfriendly world, He was born under the rule of a hostile foreign nation that was enslaving his people, essentially was to be given the death sentence at birth,But Moses has something special in his favor he was born to believing parents not just believing but truly living thier faith out.
So too is any in child in here, or if you were raised by someone with great faith you can relate to Moses here see a believing parent has your best interest! You know why because they understand that your not just their child but a child of the most high God so they are going to protect you from the snares of this world while your still a youth. When the world says no worries throw your child into the nile, or just let that child be influenced by whatsoever they desire or culture tells them .
We may not be enslaved to Egyptians but you know what we are enslaved too , the screens Wether its social media or the internet, parent if you let your child freely roam the web unsupervised don't be surprised when they start getting indoctrinated, to wicked demonic things that you werent even aware of it is your job to protect that child.
Or their friends, ever heard the saying you are a product of who you surround yourself with, don’t be surprised when your kid starts hanging with the pothead they start smoking pot, im not saying you have to tell them they can never hangout, because possibly God wants your family to be a light for those kids struggling growing up with non beliveing parents getting into the same things they saw their parents doing so now they are. an unfortunate reality of this fallen world.
But maybe your child would invite them to church, and be that Godly influence . but maybe provide a safe enviroment where they can be and where you know what goes on, not your child and billly bob going down to the park everyday to do who knows what.
Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
and For those here who grew up without this sort of parent If you read exodus you find very quickly God preservers Moses through all these dangers not only because of his parents faith but because he was going to use Moses greatly for the sake of his glory, so he will accomplish his will regardless, because I dont want anyone thinking well my parents weren't believers or great role models so thats the reason Im so messed up oh well thats my excuse,so ill just be this way my whole life !
while that may have some truth God still has a plan for your life, regardless of who raised you, we all have the abilty to choose the path we go down. so that's never a good reason to reject the Lord’s will for your life. Look at Jonathon Saul’s son he had to watch his dad spend a lot of his trying to kill his best friend David. Yet Jonathon chose to honor the Lord because he knew it was the Lords will for David to be the next king.
V3 So in a ironic sense she dose what Pharoh commands she put her baby in the nile, However she did so in a waterproof basket or papryus basket, the only other time you see that word in the bible is too describe Noah’s ark. God once again uses a water vessel to preserve life.
Now the narrative of this text in silent on whats Going through Jochebed Moses mom mind as she doing this. But I imagine the great faith in God she must have in mind. Having to put her baby boy the one she has hidden and nurtured for the last 3 months she is now having to throw him in a basket and plop him into the crocodile infested nile river.
That likely would not be what we would do, we would be like uhh God I have faith in you but I dont like the plan, Im not gonna do that, he will drown, or get eaten by a croc or i need to know more exactly whats going to happen next, wheres he gonna go, is he even going to make it?
But we see Jochebed is trusting the Childs welfare and future to God alone! More than herself,. When she sends Moses off in the basket she trusts that God would take of care it and perhaps one day bring her son back to her, but let the Lord’s will be done. We will see God bless her obedience.
Let me tell you God can protect your child far better than you can.
Exodus 2:4–6 “And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it. When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.””
V4-6Then we see the sister standing there, perhaps because she knew they would look for the child's mom when they see a floating baby, and look upstream and see a Mom standing there they would accuse her being the mother so with the sister who would have been around 12 is standing there, no one will suspect her so she could report to her mother or better yet offer the services of the mother and does jsut that. When the cry of baby Moses pierces the heart of pharohs daughter who has grown up told to reject the jews, she takes pity on him. God guides Moses’s parents, the current of the nile, and now the heart of Pharohs daughter to further his plan.
Exodus 2:7–10 “Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.””
V7-10 And now because of the Jochebed’s faith she is now getting paid to nurse her own son. Which typically in this day the child wouldnt have been weaned for 3-4 years, and Moses will now be raised in the Kings palace given access to the schooling, the royal family, People would have to bow the knee when he comes by, so Moses gets put into a great postion because his mother had so enough faith to put him in God’s hands.
I wanna put out a few points in this text, first where it says she saw that it was a fine child, Mothers have a abilty to be able see the beauty in thier children no matter what, I remember in my youth I was very stiffknecked still am some may argue, but at many points I had gotten myself intro trouble with some authority and it felt as if everyone was out to get me too persecute I can remember this happened a few times. But I remember no matter what I did my mom was always there to fight my battles, to also point out my wrongs, but to always stand by me and protect me no matter what others were saying, too always let me know tommorow is a new day so dont let todays mistake define you, If any of you know my mom you know how blessed I am God allowed me to be her son!’
The next point point a faithful mother will point you too Christ and will raise you in the knowlege of the truth, We read in 2 timothy where Paul gets to remind timothy of his faithful Mom and Grandma in his life
2 Timothy 1:5 “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.”
It does not mean mothers will be perfect at all times let me just say that, but she will see the importance of raising up a future generation of Christians, worship leaders, youth leaders, Pastors, Evangelists, missionaries, people that are hungry to share the good news of JC.
Mothers are often seen as as source of comfort, and support with one article describing mothers as “a bank where we deposit all our hurts and worries” The influence of a mother goes beyond emotional support. As Godly mothers are noted to guide thier children towards faith though both thier example and words.
Mothers are often the glue that hold the family together, bringing warmth and structure to the home for the sake of the families success often putting herself last . Which mothers dont ever fall behind on your time alone with God, for us we must first be poured into in order to be able to pour into others.
2 Timothy 3:14–15 “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”
Mothers are too point you too the scriptures of Jesus Christ and his work on the cross, To teach us all that following Christ is not about a being a good person, a higher way of living, an addition to your life. But is your life, too point out the immense chasm that lies between us and God through our rebellion of rejecting God leading ourselves into depravity, wickedness sinful desire. Mothers it does not take much time to realize your kid is sinful. Especially as a teenager,
As I am privledged enough to oversee the youth ministry at this church i can testify to that. A few months ago I was standing next to a group of them when a kid was getting dropped off in the distance when one of them made a comment about that kids weight, and I had to let them know that is gossip that is sin we are not gonna do that here. Point being God is perfect, just and holy! and we are not!
So God in his gracious mercy sent his son Jesus Christ empowered by the HS three different persons 1 being or essence the triune God to go through all the worlds temptations live a perfect sinless life to die on a cross and pay for our sin in full, the bible says if we put our faith and trust in his Resurrection from the dead now seated at the right hand of the father. We may have the death sentence lifted off us for our sin. And be reconciled, worthy, righteous, cleansed by the blood, justified in the presence of a just God. but if you reject Christ there is no longer a sacrifice left you. So if there is anyone here who wants to accept Christ as their saviour today find me or a deacon after church. So we can pray with you.
So faithful mothers read the word, with your children, as important as it is for them to do their math, science, history, even more so should the word of God be emphasized into each child life to learn and grow spiritually.
for the very next verse in timothy it reads
2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,”
Too many children in this day think they know God but they don't know the God of the bible, one of the best things you do for your child is help them to understand the scriptures and the importance of it.
There is a saying the goes Theology fuels Doxology Theology meaning study of God, and Doxology meaning praise of God, in other words the More you know about God and his atrributes the more you will want to worship him and follow him.
The primary way to know more about God should be through his word, not through the internet, Facebook, Youtube, your time in his word shouldnt jsut be a Sunday morning thing but throughout the week searching the scriptures hungry for God, it says if you draw near to him he will draw near too you. Is anyone here tired Jesus says come to me and I will give you rest, Is anyone thirsty come and drink from the rivers of living water. All who hear come!
People will lead you astray but his word will never.
So as we have gone over the narrative here in exodus and talked about Shiprah, Puah, Miriam, and Jochebed, how they recognized they would rather stand with a clean consince before the Lord, knowing they feared him rather than man, that they had enough faith that whatever the outcome would be for disobeying the king that killing a baby is murder it is agaisnt God’s will and thier not gonna do even it means getting themselves for it, The fearlessness of these women, the boldness, to have enough faith to stand up for what is right. Let that be an encouragement of our faith to each of us in this room. A group of people who would rather fear God rather than man.
Let us pray!
