Go! Live Out the Great Commission

Bible Passage: Mt 28:16–20

Summary: In Matthew 28:16-20, known as the Great Commission, Jesus instructs His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them His commands, promising His presence until the end of the age.
Application: This sermon encourages believers to embrace their role in sharing the Gospel, reminding them that every follower of Christ has a part in the mission to spread God's love and truth to the world, especially in tough times when they feel inadequate.
Teaching: The sermon teaches that the Great Commission is not just a command for the apostles, but for all Christians. It emphasizes the importance of obedience to Christ's call to discipleship and evangelism as a primary mission of the church.
How this passage could point to Christ: In this passage, Jesus is presented as the authoritative King who sends His followers on a mission. He embodies the fulfillment of the Old Testament promise of God’s presence and guidance, linking the mission to His redemptive work through the cross and resurrection.
Big Idea: Believers are called to actively participate in God's mission of reaching the lost, empowered by the promise of Christ's presence and authority.
Recommended Study: As you prepare this sermon, consider exploring the cultural context of the Great Commission in the first century and how that relates to today's worldview. Additionally, using Logos, you might want to investigate various interpretations of 'nations' and the implications for global missions. Understanding the Greek terms used in the passage can also provide deeper insight into the intent of Jesus' words.

1. Acknowledge Christ’s Authority

Mt 28:16-17
Worship-Faith-Obedience
Perhaps you'll assist your congregation in understanding that the beginning of the Great Commission involves worship and recognition of Jesus' authority. By acknowledging Jesus as Lord, doubts are met with faith, setting the stage for obedient discipleship. You could emphasize how this recognition of Jesus' sovereignty empowers believers to overcome their personal uncertainties and take part in the mission He's given.

2. Walk in Christ's Authority

Mt 28:18-19a
You could focus on Jesus' declaration of His authority and His command to 'go.' This point encourages believers to step out beyond the church's walls, understanding that Jesus' power undergirds their mission. Maybe you'll stress how the act of going in Jesus' authority transforms ordinary actions into mission-driven outreach, emboldening Christians in their daily interactions.

3. Witness with His Presence-Share your faith!

Mt 28:19b-20
Maybe you will highlight the twofold mission of making disciples through baptism and teaching, relying on the promise of Jesus' enduring presence. This point suggests that discipleship involves practical steps, knowing that Jesus empowers and sustains the effort. Perhaps you will encourage believers to teach others not just with words, but through authentic, lived faith, assured of Jesus' presence.
It doesn’t have to be complicated!
Jesus commands here in vs 19, to go and Make Disciples-mathēteuō(greek)-the action of causing another to become a disciple.
disciple-mathētēs(greek)-a learner-person who follows after and seeks to learn from another.
disciples follow after & seek to learn from Jesus’s example-be more like Him-be like our teacher Jesus. disciples change their behavior & mindset.
Jesus promised to be with them always, until the end of the age. Once you accept Jesus as your Lord & Savior, and choose to follow Him, He will be with you through all the days!
