Matthew 11:29 “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
-Augustine interprets that Jesus is simply asking us to learn the heart of Christ, a meek and lowly heart, a heart of humility.
-Greatness can only come through humility as a great tower must first have a deep and solid foundation.
Prautes- original Greek, translates to gentleness, meekness, humility
-The ancients did not consider this a virtue but a flaw as it was tied to servility, you are weak and powerless
Meekness = confident gentleness = power under control = gentle strength
-Jesus flips the narrative and reveals that meekness is not weakness
-Meekness is a virtue that is based on a correct estimate of our actual littleness and clarity to see our own sinfulness. The strength comes when you understand that true greatness is holiness and without Christ, you are little because of your sinfulness.
-The point isn’t to think less of yourself, it’s to think of yourself less
-Moses: The meekest man on earth, but is he weak?
Ephesians 4:2 “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,”
Important note: Fruit of the Spirit not the Fruit of self improvement, they cannot be bore through adherence to the law
