Psalm of the Day: Psalm 97
Psalm of the Day: Psalm 97
The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice;
let the many coastlands be glad!
Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
Fire goes before him
and burns up his adversaries all around.
His lightnings light up the world;
the earth sees and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
before the Lord of all the earth.
The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
and all the peoples see his glory.
All worshipers of images are put to shame,
who make their boast in worthless idols;
worship him, all you gods!
Zion hears and is glad,
and the daughters of Judah rejoice,
because of your judgments, O Lord.
For you, O Lord, are most high over all the earth;
you are exalted far above all gods.
O you who love the Lord, hate evil!
He preserves the lives of his saints;
he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Light is sown for the righteous,
and joy for the upright in heart.
Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,
and give thanks to his holy name!

But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.

Scripture Reading: Matthew 1:1-17
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king.
And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.
So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.

00:02
Well once again, and as always, good morning church. I was glad when they said to me let us go and Worship in the house of the Lord.
00:12
And happy Mother's Day. To all of the mothers to anyone who has a mother. My heartfelt love and compassion to those who may have lost their mother. Or for those whom this is a difficult day. Today, we often celebrate is good and right to celebrate, but we can also be painfully aware.
00:35
For. This is a day of mourning. And so the goal, My Hope and prayer today. Is that we can all? Find ways to scripture, teaches us. Morning with those who mourn and rejoice with those who Rejoice. So, for either group of people. I have a a gift for you this morning.
01:00
What better way to come and celebrate Mother's Day? Than preaching through another genealogy in the Book of Genesis. Those you've been here. No, we don't. We don't stop this train for anything. We're just preaching through Genesis, and it turns out here. On this Mother's Day. We have a genealogy often called the table of Nations, which just sounds so exciting.
01:26
In Genesis chapter 10. And in one sense, I am partially kidding, right? Because everyone hears genealogy in the Bible and our eyes roll, right? Most of you, I see, are sort of trying to figure out how you're going to fall asleep without being offensive to me. While I'm preaching, I understand, I get it.
01:45
But, on the other hand, I think it's actually good and right, and in many ways, appropriate here. On Mother's Day, we would look at a genealogy. For this is a tracing of families. What our families, if not from others. It's important we look at and see the flow of families.
02:06
And his mothers. The job is critically important. For the mothers of these men that we have listed in this genealogy. Their Sons. That they once held and cared for. Become Nations. Become peoples. It's an important job. Our our tests text for today! Genesis chapter 10. We'll read all of it this morning and buckle up.
02:42
It's a fun one. Genesis 10, starting in verse 1. These are the generations. Of the sons of Noah. Shem, ham, and japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood. The sons of japheth. Gomer, magai Javin, tubal mesh, and tiras. The sons of Gomer. Ashkenaz, rip off torg, ma.
03:11
The sons of Javan. Eli, Shaw, tarshish, katim, and duranim. From these, the coastland people spread in their lands, each with his own language by their Clans in their Nations. The sons of ham. Kush, Egypt put and Canaan. The sons of cush. Siba, havola sabta, Rama and sabteca. The sons of Rama Shiva and dead end?
03:43
Kush, father, Nimrod. He was the first on Earth to be a mighty man. He was a mighty Hunter before the Lord. Therefore, it is said like Nimrod, a mighty Hunter before the Lord. The beginning of his kingdom was Babel Eric acod and kalna in the land of shinar. From that land, he went into Assyria and built Nineveh Rehab.
04:05
Both ear kala and resin between Nineveh and kala, that is the great City. Egypt, father ludeim, anamim levahim, and kaluhim. From whom the Philistines came? And capitaline. Cain and fathered side on his firstborn in heth. And the jebusites, the amorites, the gergeshites, the hivites, the archites, the cyanites, the arvadites, the zemorites, and the homolites.
04:38
Afterwards, the clans of the Canaanites dispersed and the territory of the Canaanites extended from side on in the direction of Gerard as far as Gaza. And in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Adma, and zeboim. As far as Lasha. These are the sons of ham by their Clans, their languages, their lands, and their Nations.
04:59
To Shem. Also, the father of all the children of Eber, the Elderborn of japheth children, were born. The sons of Shem. Elam. Sure, our Prashad lewd and Aram? The sons of Arab. Ooze whole. Gather in Marsh. Arpashad, fathered shella. And shall our father Eber to Eber were born two sons.
05:24
The name of one was peleg for in his days. The Earth was divided and his brother's name was joktan. Jocktan fathered almadad shell up harm of zafath har zar maveth, jarrah hadaram, uzal dikla, Obel abimayel, Sheba ophir javila, and Joe Bob. These were the sons of jock 10. The territory in which they lived extended from Misha in the direction of sephar to the Hill Country in the.
05:57
These are the sons of Shem by their Clans, their languages, their lands, and their Nations. These are the clans of the sons of Noah. According to their genealogies in their Nations and from these, the Nations spread abroad on the earth after. The flood. These are the words of the Lord for us this morning.
06:15
Let's open with the word of prayer.
06:20
Oh Lord, Our Lord, How Majestic is your name and all the Earth? We praise you for you! Are The Sovereign King of? We thank you for your son, our Lord, and Savior, Jesus Christ, the one who will rule all nations with a rod of iron, the one to whom every knee will bow and every tongue confess that he is.
06:39
Lord, thank you for this precious gift. That you would send your son to us. Strangers and outcasts. Foreigners calling us to be your sons. We thank you for the precious gift of Salvation you have given to us. May we glory in that teach us, show us. May our hearts be moved.
06:59
We ask that we would be a people who are changed by your word and it's hearing. Would you speak through your servant this morning? It's in Jesus name that we pray. Amen. And amen. Again, I say it doesn't get much more exciting. Then another. Genealogy. And I think it's important we start there by realizing this is another genealogy.
07:27
Well, we will end up seeing as we go through the Book of Genesis here, especially at the beginning. Genealogy serve to fill the gaps between the big stories. Right, our last genealogy. If we go back was in Genesis chapter 5, the book of the generations of Adam. And that genealogy served to fill.
07:49
The time between Adam. And Noah. So, we have creation. Adam, The Saga of Adam with his sons, Cain and Abel, and then the genealogy. And then, after that geology of the Saga of Noah, Noah, and the flood and his sons with him. And here we have another genealogy, this genealogy.
08:09
If I'm being honest, we've only covered the first half. So, buckle up. We have this genealogy next week. A high point as far as narrative goes, though a low point in terms of human history goes the Tower of Babel. And then. The conclusion is how I view it. The conclusion of?
08:33
This genealogy. That Bridges the gap between NOAA. A righteous man, blameless in his generation, who walked with God. And Abram. One whom God will Covenant with in a particular and Powerful and important way. The one who becomes the?
08:55
Of all who are saved. It's important genealogy. But it has a much different. Structure. If you remember, last time we went through genealogy in Genesis 5. It has. There's two things going on one. It has what we call a linear structure where you have this person and their son, and then that person's son, and then that person's son, and, and you're following, The Descendants in a straight line.
09:24
And the structure was tied together by a certain form. The form was when someone like, if you go to Genesis 5, 6, when Seth lived 105 years, he fathered enosh, right. The form was when someone had lived some amount of time. He fathered this person. We continue. After he fathered this person, he lived a more amount of years and had many other Sons and Daughters.
09:46
Thus, the days of whoever it was were some amount of years. And he died. And the structure showed us a linear genealogy and then, and he died, and he died, and he died, and he died, and he died, and he died. In the structure in Genesis 5 helped us to see what the point is.
10:06
Well, the structure in Genesis 10 is not linear. We don't have Noah and his son and his son, son, and his son, son, and his son, son, and his son, son, generation, after generation after generation. Instead. We have multiple Generations spread across in a non-linear way. We're going to follow a son in his descendants and another son in his descendants and another son in his descendants and in those descendants.
10:30
We have grandsons and other grandsons multiple men from the same generation. In fact, the structure, instead of being aligned. Looks like this. We're introduced to it. In Genesis 10, 1. These are the generations of the sons of Noah. Who are the sons of Noah Shem, ham and japheth? Now, over here you may be like, well, why are they in backwards?
10:54
Well, because we're going to be given these? In their bulk in reverse order. And it's in fact, not reverse order. It goes middle child, youngest child, oldest child, so it's not even like reverse child order. But this is the order we are giving them. And we follow from Noah to japheth.
11:14
In verse 2, the sons of japheth, in verses 2 through 5. And we're given one son and his descendants. And then, in verses 6 through 20, we are given ham's descendants. So we. Japith couple Generations and we go back. We do ham and a few Generations, and then in verses 21 to 31, we come back.
11:39
We do Shem. And we follow him through a few generations. And we close with this. These are the clans of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies in their Nations. And from these, the Nations spread abroad on the earth after the flood. And here the language was spreading.
11:58
Abroad becomes what important right in a linear genealogy. We are getting to one person. But here in the table of Nations, the goal is to show how mankind has spread abroad. There is, however, still an important structure. We can't miss and a theme something that occurs in all of this.
12:18
That helps us to see the point. Again, it's sort of. We've graduated. Genesis 5 was entry-level genealogies, Genesis 10. Now, we're getting into, like graduate school level genealogies, are a little more difficult, but I believe we can all do it here. Instead of the same simple form. Of this person lived this long and had this son and many other Sons and daughters, and he died.
12:43
There's one thought that unites all of these, and I have it up here for you. We see it first in Genesis 10, 5. From these, the coastland people spread in. Lands, each with his own language by their Clans in their Nations. The thought that unites all of these is land's language, Clans, and Nations.
13:06
Though not always in that order, but then look at this Genesis chapter 10, verse 20, the end of Shem and hit or ham and his descendants. These are the sons of ham. Bye! Clans, their languages, their lands, and their Nations. The same four thoughts? Then in Genesis 10, verse 31.
13:27
These are the sons of sham by there. Clans, their languages, their lands. And their Nations. The structure, then, is getting us to see this that from Noah, one man and his family on an ark. The Earth has been destroyed, and then God remade it. And in this remaking. God gave Noah a command.
13:58
The simplest we put is to spread abroad. But we can read it here. Genesis, chapter 8, verse 16. God said to Noah go out from the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your son's wives with you. Bring out with you. Every living thing is with you of All Flesh, birds and animals, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.
14:21
That they may swarm on the earth. And here's the command to Noah be fruitful. And multiply. On the earth. In Genesis 10, we see Noah. Faithful. Noah and his sons and his son's descendants faithful? To go from. One small family. To expanding over the whole earth through spreading. Abroad.
14:53
So, what we have then in this structure? I want to make sure we note this. Some joyous hope. This genealogy. Is largely good news.
15:11
The genealogy is largely. Great news!
15:16
Mankind was in dire situations. Things have gotten so bad.
15:26
Before the flood that every intention of the thought of man was only evil continually. No one was righteous. No, not one, no one seek God. But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord, but Noah was a righteous man who walked with God blameless in his generation. But Noah?
15:47
And so after God has blotted out all life on the earth, we're left with a tiny seed of Hope.
15:55
And that tiny Seed of Hope begins to grow and flourish. We don't have here. Just a tracing of one man to one man to one man to one man. Rather, here we have a growing and exploding of life over the face of the Earth. Such that all mankind now?
16:13
Can come here. Matthew Henry, I think, said it best. He said, though no one, saved the sons of Israel. Know exactly how they fit here in this table. This, we do know. We are all here.
16:35
From this. Comes every tribe and tongue, a nation. People who fill every land from every language, every Clan, every exploding of Nations. So Chanel over the face of the Earth. We have exploded. And we've conquered more and more land, and we've subdued and showed dominion over more and more land.
16:58
And languages are growing in flourishing. And there are different Clans and Nations over the face of the Earth.
17:08
In some sense. This is hope.
17:13
Mankind. Could have been eliminated.
17:18
Mankind should have been eliminated in some sense. And your God is faithful. The joy is hope is that God will still continue to be faithful.
17:34
But.
17:38
There's also. A looming Shadow. We see it in a few different ways. We'll spend this week in the grace point, and if you don't go to Grace group one invitation. Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, we have Grace groups all of those nights. Pick one love to have you join one. But if you can't go, you can read your Grace point in there. We have. Nimrod was an interesting character. Not a good one. Let's just say that. It turns out all of the Nations and all of the. Sons that are mentioned here. Not all of them are good.
18:25
We had we heard of the son of peleg? To eber, we're born two sons anyone's peleg. For in his days, the Earth was. Divide it. Doesn't sound great. There's a looming Shadow.
18:41
For the first people reading this as? Boa right there you go. If you can't say the difference between Moses and Noe, just combine together. Moses when he was writing this, his original audience. There's a section here that would hit them like a ton of bricks. Genesis chapter 10, verse 15 Canaan, fathered side on his firstborn in half and. The jebusites, the amorites, the gergeshites, the hivites, the archives, the cyanites, the artevites, the zemonites, and the hathmethites. These become. Until we get to Babylon in Assyria, which are also mentioned here. These become the great enemies of the people of God.
19:26
These become the the ones that they are warring with throughout Joshua and judges, and first and second, Samuel, and first and second Kings.
19:37
These become. Problematic. There's a looming Shadow. Anyway, we even have to just acknowledge that as we cover all of the sons of ham and Canaan, there's a shadow looming over them in the curse that came to us in chapter 4 or chapter 9, cursed to be Canaan. A servant's servant shall he be to his brothers? All is not well. This genealogy, though, there is hope as mankind spreads abroad. There's difficulty. Even if we come and look, hear this structure. They each have their own lands.
20:22
But how much of the tragedy of mankind?
20:27
And they say this carefully. But how much of the tragedy of human history? Right, and this is all of human history, and so we don't need to talk about any one particular Nation or time or place. How much of the entirety of human history is tragedy because of land? And dispute over who owns it.
20:49
Languages, though. They are beautiful, and it's wonderful to hear different languages. One of my favorite places in the world to go is New York City, and to just walk down the street and as you're walking down the street down Manhattan, you will hear five or six or seven different languages being spoken on one city block. And I love that, I think that's wonderful and beautiful. It's also difficult. There's a thing called a language barrier. It's not always great. Clans. Serve to unite. He also served to divide. Nations. War against other nations. It's not always. Good and awesome!
21:41
There's a shadow that looms. Over this genealogy.
21:49
But I think that's good too.
21:55
Because Our.
21:59
Even in the midst of this genealogy. Is not just for mankind exploding over the Earth, that's not our hope. So, that's good. And there is some hope that this shows God's faithfulness. But ultimately, how is God's faithfulness shown? Well, there's a reason we read the genealogy from Matthew 1 this morning.
22:26
The Hope in the table of Nations? Goes much further than just what we find here in Genesis 10.
22:38
Let's flip from Genesis 10. All the way to the end. To Revelation chapter 7.
22:55
Before we read Revelation 7, let me say this.
23:00
The problem. We have this looming Shadow. Is ultimately that mankind cannot save itself. The looming Shadow to say it is simply as I can is. Mankind is struggling after the flood with the same thing mankind struggle with before the Flood. Before the flood. Every intention of the heart of man was only evil continually after the flood. We're doing a little better mankind is exploding over the face of the Earth. But since Stilling? The reason land's languages, Clans, and Nations become difficult is because Sims still exists.
23:48
So, what's the light that will pierce that shadow? Revelation chapter 7:9.
23:58
After this, I looked. And behold. A great multitude that no one could number. From every. Nation. From all tribes. And peoples. And languages. John in Revelation 7. Is seeking to tie together? All of the? Spreading that has occurred in Genesis 10. I believe, is as fully intentional. By John as he wrote it under the inspiration, most importantly of the Holy Spirit and God himself, who inspired these words?
24:44
What is the hope for every nation listed in the table of Nations? Well, the hope is that from every nation from all tribes, peoples, and languages. There are people standing before the Throne and before the lamb. Their clothed in white robe with palm branches in their hands and crying out with a loud voice. Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne and to the lamb. And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders. In the four living creatures and they fell on their faces before the Throne and worshiped God, saying, amen.
25:20
Blessing and glory and wisdom, and Thanksgiving and honor and power, and might be to our God forever and ever. Amen.
25:32
Ultimately. Is our hope.
25:39
The table of Nations. Is important. It shows us how mankind has spread. It shows us where these people live and those people live. It gives us historical context to what's going on in Genesis. It gives us the the connection that gets us from Noah to Abraham. It's fascinating and beautiful and important. There's hope that God is faithful. He will multiply people. But ultimately, our hope is this. The savior of all Nations is Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Look to Him. Trust in him. He is our hope, our savior. Forever! To him be all blessing and power and glory, and might and worship forever and ever.
26:30
Amen. Let's pray.
