PASTORAL PRAYER
PASTORAL PRAYER
Gracious and Almighty God,
On this special day, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude and reverence.
We thank You for the gift of mothers — for their love, their sacrifice, and their strength.
As Psalm 54 says, O God, save me by your name, and vindicate me by your might! —
we are reminded that just as we cry out to You in our time of need,
so many of us first learned how to call on Your name from the lips of a faithful mother.
Lord, today we lift up every woman who has borne the sacred calling of motherhood —
those who have raised children,
those who have longed for children,
those who have lost children,
and those who have mothered through mentorship, love, and example.
You see each heart, and know each story.
As the Psalmist declares, Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life,
we ask that You be the strength of every mother today.
For the weary, bring rest.
For the overwhelmed, bring peace.
For the grieving, bring comfort.
For the joyful, receive their praise.
May every mother find encouragement in knowing You are faithful —
the One who will return the evil to my enemies; in your faithfulness put an end to them.
We trust You to be the protector
and sustainer of all those who lean on You.
Let our response, like David’s, be one of worship:
With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you;
I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good.
May our lives reflect that same gratitude —
not only to You, our heavenly Father,
but also to the mothers who have shown us Your love in action.
You, O Lord, have delivered me from every trouble,
and through the example of godly women,
You have revealed Your steadfast love.
May this day be a blessing to all who have mothered in Your name,
and may we honor them well —
with words, with deeds, and with lives
that walk in the truth they have passed down.
In the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord,
Amen.
INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
With today being Mother’s Day, we are going to take a brief break from our study in 2 Peter to give some directed encouragement to these special ladies.
Does not mean that men and children get to check out, thinking this has no application to them
Reminder:
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
So while this time is particularly to be encouraging to the mothers/grandmothers in the room,
theses principles are to be practically adopted by all people of all ages as we walk in a manner worthy of our calling.
Orient to topic:
At this point in the gospel account, an angel has appeared to both Zechariah and Mary.
Zechariah was informed that he and his wife, Elizabeth, will have a boy who will be greatly used by God to make ready a people prepared to receive the Lord.
As a sign, he was made unable to speak because of his unbelief (“How will I know?”).
Mary was informed that she would be the mother of the Messiah, despite being a virgin, due to the Holy Spirit coming upon her and making it possible (“How will this be?”)
We pick up the text as Mary joins her cousin Elizabeth (in her 6-month of pregnancy), being greeted with a peculiar blessing by Elizabeth.
Read Luke 1:39-45
The Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth to bless Mary with a message.
This was further confirmation to Mary of God’s working in her life because Elizabeth would not have known what had been revealed to Mary.
In the verses that follow, we see Mary’s humility and Godly mindset, in the Magnificat, as she seeks to glorify God
It is also revealed to us that while God uses ordinary people to fulfill His extraordinary plans (like Mary), we see that these ordinary people also have extraordinary faith.
This text of Scripture reveals to us The Actions Of A Godly Mother.
Read Luke 1:46-55
The Godly Mother Glorifies God For His Goodness
The Godly Mother Glorifies God For His Goodness
verses 46-49
μεγαλύνω - “magnify”
to enlarge or make big
Mary rightly views the bigness of God and the smallness of man (humble estate).
We must view God rightly
Isaiah 6:1–3
In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”
Recognizing the bigness of God puts in perspective the greatness of God:
Mary rejoiced that He was her Savior
Israel’s history is full of times they forgot God
They forgot God, their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt, wondrous works in the land of Ham, and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.
The Book of Judges contains seven cycles of sin and deliverance.
Each cycle involves the Israelites:
following God
falling into sin and idolatry
being punished by God through foreign oppression
crying out to God for help
God sending a judge to deliver them from the oppression.
Mary had great confidence in God, both through what He has done for His people and what He had revealed to her:
Read Luke 1:31
“Jesus” is a Greek transliteration of the Hebrew name “Joshua”
“Joshua” = the Lord is salvation
Mary rejoiced that the Son that she was going to bear was the long-awaited, long-promised Messiah who would be the salvation of Israel.
Mary recognized that He is merciful and gracious
God considered her in her humble estate.
She is a sinner
She is poor
God graciously choosing her as the mother of the Messiah would lead to all generations calling her blessed.
Read Luke 1:45
Luke 11:27
As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!”
A Godly mother leads her children to understand their low estate as sinners before a holy God.
A Godly mother recognizes that her worth does not come from within herself, but from the God who has seen her in her low estate.
A Godly mother doesn’t merely tell her children what is right, she shows them.
She demonstrates a sincere faith that repents when she falls short and rejoices in the grace of God that sustains her.
My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!
Mary Glorifies God For His Goodness, rejoicing in Him as her Savior, understanding her own blessedness despite her lowliness.
The Godly Mother Calls Others To Experience God’s Mercy
The Godly Mother Calls Others To Experience God’s Mercy
verses 50-53
As someone who recognizes God’s goodness, Mary calls on people to come and experience His mercy like she has.
She lays out God’s track record:
He scatters the proud
Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
He exalts the humble
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
He has filled the hungry
For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.
Mary recognizes what God does.
She understands His character and how He acts.
She knows He is holy, but also merciful and gracious
Having these things in mind, it is important for a Godly mother to understand that discipleship to draw people to God begins at home.
A mother’s first educational responsibility is for her children.
You shall teach them [God’s commands] diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
We live in a world where genuine conversation gives way to social media.
Parents (and kids) are more concerned with their phones than they are spending quality time together.
The Godly mother creates and cultivates an environment where God’s Word is neither awkward nor secondary.
It’s woven into the tapestry of everyday life, whether around the dinner table, during a car ride, or at bedtime prayers.
She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
When Godly mothers teach their children, family, friends, and neighbors out of the overflow of their study in the Word, they lead their families towards a deeper faith grounded in the knowledge of God's mercy and strength.
The Godly Mother Trusts In God’s Promises
The Godly Mother Trusts In God’s Promises
verses 54-55
Mary acknowledges that God acts for Israel’s benefit because of His own mercy.
God’s actions always bring glory to Himself
God’s actions for Israel extend from promises made
But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend; you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, “You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off”
Remember these things, O Jacob, and Israel, for you are my servant; I formed you; you are my servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me.
You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.
At this point in history, Mary sees God’s promises as coming to fulfillment through Jesus.
This gives her confidence in the God she has grown up learning about
This greatly encourages her faith to continue believing the OT promises He has made
The gives her courage to believe the promises that will be made
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures
Because of what has been fulfilled, we can have confidence that what is yet to happen will come to pass.
Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.
The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.
CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
As we pause and take inventory of our life today, seek to see if you exemplify the mindset that has been revealed to us this morning.
The mindset that leads you to:
Glorify God For His Goodness
Call Others To Experience God’s Mercy
Trust In God’s Promises
We are blessed to be here today and to know the truth of the Word of God.
There are many in our communities and in our lives who do not know
Let’s learn from this blessed mother and make it our priority to point people to Him
