Ephesians 4:29 says, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”
Let’s Be Real: We Love the Tea
“Spill the tea.”
It’s funny. It’s trendy. It’s everywhere.
It usually means, "Give me the drama…the lore…”
Who’s dating who?
Who said what behind someone’s back?
Who messed up this time?
It feels harmless. Sometimes it even feels fun. But let’s pause for a second:
What if the tea you're sipping is someone else's pain?
What if the tea you're spilling is someone else's trust being shattered?
Before You Spill the Tea…
Recognize that Gossips Says More about Your Integrity than the Information You Seek to Share
Recognize that Gossips Says More about Your Integrity than the Information You Seek to Share
Gossip isn’t just big, bold lies.
It’s often those little comments we slip in casually:
“I probably shouldn’t say this, but…”
“They didn’t tell me not to share it…”
“It’s true, so it’s fine, right?”
But gossip, even when it’s true, leaks integrity.
It tells others: “Your story isn’t safe with me.”
And worse—it turns people’s real lives into entertainment.
Reflect on the Results of Your Words
Reflect on the Results of Your Words
Before you “spill the tea,” ask yourself:
Is this building someone up or tearing them down?
Would I say this if the person were standing right next to me?
Is this even mine to share?
If the answer isn’t clear, maybe it's time to pour it out—before it spills and stains your witness.
Sticks and stones may break my bones,
But words can never hurt me,
Or so they say, but deep inside,
My heart is torn and hurting.
For every insult flung my way,
A wound that never heals,
Each cruel taunt a jagged edge,
That cuts me to the feel.
The sticks and stones that strike my flesh,
Will fade and disappear,
But words can linger in my mind,
And haunt me year on year.
Let them break my bones if they must,
But spare me from their words,
For sticks and stones may hurt a while,
But words can crush like swords.
I sit alone and weep,
My heart a shattered thing,
For all the cruel and thoughtless words,
That cut me like a sting.
Sticks and stones may break my bones,
But words can break my soul,
And though I try to shake them off,
They’ll haunt me till I’m old.

the gospel
words that build up
words that meaningfully reconcile and offer sincere apology
Remember Jesus
Remember Jesus
Jesus knew everything about everyone. Every secret.
John 2:25 “And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.”
Every shame. Every sin. Every motivation. But He didn’t gossip. He didn’t humiliate.
He restored. He corrected people directly, lovingly, and always with their good in mind—not their downfall.
What if we used our words like He did?
To build up, not break down.
To protect, not expose.
To restore, not entertain.
A Prayer for Today:
A Prayer for Today:
God, teach me to be wise with my words. Help me to be someone who builds others up instead of tearing them down. When I’m tempted to gossip, remind me that every story belongs to someone You love. Make me a safe place, not a source of drama. Help me spill truth, not tea. Amen.
