DEUTERONOMY
LXX: Deuteronomion; Hebrew: “these are the words”
Dt 1:1 These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the
wilderness,
Dt 1:5 Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to explain this law,
saying,
Dt 31:22 So Moses wrote this song the same day and taught it to the people of Israel.
2 Ki 14:6 But he did not put to death the children of the murderers, according to what is
written in the Book of the Law of Moses, where the LORD commanded, “Fathers shall
not be put to death because of their children, nor shall children be put to death
because of their fathers. But each one shall die for his own sin.”
19
THE COVENANTAL STRUCTURE OF DEUTERONOMY
(a) a preamble identifying the covenant mediator (1:1–5);
(b) a historical prologue reviewing previous covenant history (1:6–4:40);
(c) stipulations expounding the covenant way of life (4:44–11:32; 12–26);
(d) a declaration of sanctions stating the blessings for obedience and curses for
disobedience of the covenant (chs. 27–30);
(e) a provision for the administration of the covenant after the death of the
inaugural mediator (chs. 31–34).
