Intro:

Focused & Diligent vs. 14-19

In this section we see that a worker approved by God is one who is focused and diligent
It is said that if the devil can defeat you he will try to distract you
We see several things that Paul warns Timothy not get involved in

Doesn’t Quarrel Over Words

The first warning is not to quarrel over words
Titus 3:9 ESV
But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.

Rightly Handles Word of Truth

Instead, a worker approved by God rightly handles the word of truth
1 Timothy 4:13 ESV
Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.

Avoids Irreverent Babble

Built on God’s Firm Foundation

1 Corinthians 3:11 ESV
For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Sanctified & Useful vs. 20-21

A worker approved by God is a sanctified & useful worker
Sanctified has several meanings but here it means set apart from the world
There is a separation in your lifestyle from the ungodly
Paul uses the metaphor of vessels
vessels were pitchers and pots that were used for different tasks
Without electricity and running water these vessels were essentials for daily life
The valuable vessels were made of gold and silver and would store precious oil and spices
The less honorable made of clay and wood and did the undesirable work
We can move from undesirable to honorable by cleansing our lives

Gentle & Kind vs. 23-26

A worker approved by God is gentle and kind
t

Pursue Righteousness

Ignore Controversies

Not Quarrelsome, but Kind

Titus 3:2 ESV
to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.

Corrects w/ Gentleness

1 Peter 3:15 ESV
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
