Introduction

Today, I want to discuss the charismatic practice of being slain in the Spirit. This act involves an individual falling backwards on the floor after the laying of hands, claiming they were overcome by the power or presence of the Holy Spirit. Is being "slain in the Spirit" biblical, or is it the doctrine of man?

The Argument for Slain in the Spirit

One of the doctrine of Pentecostalism and Charismatic Movements
Maria Woodworth-Etter (Trance Evangelist) and Katherine Kuhlman (latter credited it for terming the phrase)
Result of being slain in the Spirit are: falling backwards, shaking or uncontrolled movements, uncontrollable laughter, etc. . .
Bible verses used to support doctrine are:
1 Samuel 4:1 ESV
1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They encamped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphek.
Isaiah 28:13 ESV
13 And the word of the Lord will be to them precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little, that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
2 Chronicles 5:11–14 ESV
11 And when the priests came out of the Holy Place (for all the priests who were present had consecrated themselves, without regard to their divisions, 12 and all the Levitical singers, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, their sons and kinsmen, arrayed in fine linen, with cymbals, harps, and lyres, stood east of the altar with 120 priests who were trumpeters; 13 and it was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise and thanksgiving to the Lord), and when the song was raised, with trumpets and cymbals and other musical instruments, in praise to the Lord, “For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever,” the house, the house of the Lord, was filled with a cloud, 14 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of God.
Ezekiel 1:28 ESV
28 Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking.
Daniel 8:17–18 ESV
17 So he came near where I stood. And when he came, I was frightened and fell on my face. But he said to me, “Understand, O son of man, that the vision is for the time of the end.” 18 And when he had spoken to me, I fell into a deep sleep with my face to the ground. But he touched me and made me stand up.
Daniel 10:4–11 ESV
4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river (that is, the Tigris) 5 I lifted up my eyes and looked, and behold, a man clothed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. 6 His body was like beryl, his face like the appearance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a multitude. 7 And I, Daniel, alone saw the vision, for the men who were with me did not see the vision, but a great trembling fell upon them, and they fled to hide themselves. 8 So I was left alone and saw this great vision, and no strength was left in me. My radiant appearance was fearfully changed, and I retained no strength. 9 Then I heard the sound of his words, and as I heard the sound of his words, I fell on my face in deep sleep with my face to the ground. 10 And behold, a hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. 11 And he said to me, “O Daniel, man greatly loved, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright, for now I have been sent to you.” And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up trembling.
John 18:6 ESV
6 When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
Acts 26:13–14 ESV
13 At midday, O king, I saw on the way a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, that shone around me and those who journeyed with me. 14 And when we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’
Revelation 1:17 ESV
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last,
Do these verse actually support what one being slain in the Spirit? Why?

What does God say?

A result of the Spirit’s presence in the life of a believer is self-control
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
2 Timothy 1:7 ESV
7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
The filling of the Spirit results in empowerment of gifts, and praise of thanksgiving to testify of God’s glory, not unintelligible and uncontrolled actions
1 Corinthians 12:7–11 ESV
7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
Ephesians 5:17–20 ESV
17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
I can biblically argue being slain in the Spirit is a sign an individual is possessed by an unclean spirit rather than being overcome by the presence of the Holy Spirit
Mark 9:17–22 ESV
17 And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” 19 And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” 20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

Conclusion

So what do you say? Does the doctrine of being slain in the Spirit align with biblical truth? In my assessment of the text, it is false and those who promote it must stop immediately. The Bible does not support anything that resembles that other than demonic possession. When one is filled by the Spirit, they worship in an orderly fashion through songs and praise of thanksgiving. Self-control is a characteristic of the fruit of the Spirit. The one who walks in step with the Spirit exhibits this at all times. Those who do not, fulfill their fleshly desires as Paul says. Therefore, let us understand the danger of this doctrine, warn others about, and educate them on how to serve God with respect and honor.
