The Actions and Support of a Good Mother
Notes
Transcript
Hannah is one of the heroines of the bible. She was one of Elkanah’s two wives but was unable to have children. Hannah deeply desired to have children and finally prayed before the Lord that if He blessed her with children, she would give the child to the Lord for all of his days. She was praying so fervently that Eli, the priest, thought that she was drunk.
The first twenty verses of this chapter are an amazing story by themselves. However, this morning we will look at the remainder of the chapter where we will see six points regarding a good mother.
One final point that needs to be made before we read the passage is that these points would generally apply to all of us. However, our focus today is the role of the mother and her place in the family.
Let’s stand together and read 1 Samuel 1:21-28
A good mother sacrifices for the well-being of the family (v. 22)
A good mother sacrifices for the well-being of the family (v. 22)
Hannah abstains from going with the rest of the family to sacrifice to the Lord because of the baby. This was what was best for the child and she had intentions on making the trip after this. Her intent was to deliver Samuel to Eli so that he would serve the Lord there. The sacrifice here is remaining at home while the rest of the family is journeying to worship. This was something that they did regularly and it was surely difficult to know the rest of this family was journeying without her to do it. The will of God in this case is for Samuel to be dedicated to the Lord. Following the Lord’s will is for the well-being of all involved.
The reality is that the role of a mother is so often in the background and gets little to no recognition. The mother ought to be most concerned about the Lord’s will for all those in the household. Really, this is the case for all of us. We should be most concerned with the will of God for everyone.
A good mother is going to make sacrifices so that those around her will thrive. She’s going to help with homework. Work if the family is in need of financial support, be sure
We also see in verse 22 that
A good mother remembers her promises (v. 22)
A good mother remembers her promises (v. 22)
If we go back to verse 11, we remember that Hannah vows to the Lord that if she is granted a child she will give the Lord the child for the rest of her days. It is important to point out here that this doesn’t just include when we make promises to God, but also to all of those that are around us.
It is a good mother who will be trust to do exactly what she says that she is going to do. Whether it be to her husband in wedding vows, to her children, or to the friends that are around her, promises should be kept. Everything that they say should be taken seriously
A good mother is equipped by those in her life (v. 23)
A good mother is equipped by those in her life (v. 23)
When a mother is following the leading of the Lord, it is vital that those around her are supportive when she does radical things. But keep in mind that these radical things are according to the will of God.
A good mother values proper worship (v. 24-25)

Hannah follows up on her promise by giving a vow offering, which is outlined in Numbers 15:8-10. Hannah gives the example here of abiding the way that God has laid out that he is to be worshipped.
And when you offer a bull as a burnt offering or sacrifice, to fulfill a vow or for peace offerings to the Lord, then one shall offer with the bull a grain offering of three tenths of an ephah of fine flour, mixed with half a hin of oil. And you shall offer for the drink offering half a hin of wine, as a food offering, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

The result of her dedication to prayer results in the birth of a child. Not only do are we reminded of Hannah’s dedication to prayer, but we are also reminded that she attributes what God has
A good mother understands that all that has been given to her belongs to the Lord (v. 28)

We finally read that Samuel is being lent to the Lord. It is here that we should recognize that Hannah knows that this child belonged to God all along.
