The Significance of Sunday For Christians
The Significance of Sunday For Christians
Sunday was the day of Christ’s resurrection.
See Mark 16:1-8...
Sunday was the day that Jesus often met with His disciples.
He appeared to Mary Magdalene and the other women, the disciples on the road to Emmaus, the disciples (without Thomas), the disciples with Thomas.
John 20:19-29...
Sunday was the day the Holy Spirit came.
Acts 1:5 “for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”” (see John 16:7)
Acts 2:1 “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.”
The Feast of Weeks (Pentecost) was to occur seven full weeks after the Feast of Firstfruits; thus it was named “Weeks”. Coming seven weeks after the beginning of the Passover, the festival always fell on the first day of the week (Sunday). (Leviticus 23:15-17)
Sunday was the day the church was established.
Matthew 16:18 “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Acts 2:41 “So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.”
1 Corinthians 12:12–13 “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.”
The New Testament Model For Sunday
The New Testament Model For Sunday
The early church worshiped and had fellowship daily.
Acts 2:42 “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”
Acts 2:46–47 “And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
It didn’t take long for Sunday to become the primary day for worship.
See Acts 20:7-12...
See 1 Corinthians 16:1-2...
Revelation 1:10 “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet”
Psalm 118 seems to indicates that Sunday would be set aside for worship.
See Psalm 118:22-24...
We should not forsake assembling together to worship the Lord.
See Hebrews 10:23-25...
