There are times when you only have time to respond
During my time in the Army we trained relentlessly
We drilled over and over
from 3-5 second rushes to securing an injured soldier under fire and returning them to safety
You did this because in the moment of crisis you were trained to respond just as you had time and time again
This Psalm Points to a specific time and a particular context in the life of David
Lead In:
1 Sam. 17
David Battles with Goliath
David Kills Goliath
King Sual takes him away from his family
1 Sam 18
Saul places David in charge of the armies
David is incredibly successful where ever Saul sent him
After a successful campaign The women sang was the played, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousand.”
Saul’s ego takes a hit and

Saul looked at David with suspicion from that day on.
Saul becomes angry and begins to seek to kill David
Saul offer’s his Daughter to Michal and requires David to go against the Philistines hoping he would be killed by them
When David comes back successful
Saul becomes even more afraid.

Jonathon told to kill David; however, Jonathon warns David of his father’s intentions
Saul tries to pin David to the wall with a spear

Jonathan forms a covenant with David

David Flees to Nob and this is where he finds himself hungry and eats the Consecrated Bread from the alter.
David asks for a weapon and the priest gives him the sword of Goliath
Then David fled to Gath and is spotted by the servants of Achish King of Gath.
The King sends to have David taken and David pretends to be insane
1 Samuel 21:13 NASB95
So he disguised his sanity before them, and acted insanely in their hands, and scribbled on the doors of the gate, and let his saliva run down into his beard.
The Achish says, why do you bring me a madman, I have plenty of them already in my presence and sends him away
1 Sam 22
David escapes into the cave of Adullam
He is there alone and his family hears of where he is
His brothers and his father’s household came to him there
The Bible states,
1 Samuel 22:2 ESV
And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul, gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him about four hundred men.
And this is the Psalm David is writing to those who are with him
Everyone who was
In Distress
In Debt
and Bitter in Soul

Worship the Lord Verses 1-3

David could have Wallowed and complained about his misery
And yet David starts out with
Psalm 34:1 NASB95
I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
Instead of complaining to God he chooses to Worship Him
David’s soul boasts in the Lord
Those who have been humbled with him will hear these boasts and rejoice
O magnify the Lord with me
Two types of Magnification
Microscope vs Telescope
Take Something Small and make it great
vs
Take something Great and massive but it is so far away you need to bring it closer
Bringing the people closer to God’s Sovereignty, Power, and Majesty
The problems were insignificant compared to the Greatness of God!

Seek the Lord Verses 4-7
