There are times when you only have time to respond
During my time in the Army we trained relentlessly
We drilled over and over
from 3-5 second rushes to securing an injured soldier under fire and returning them to safety
You did this because in the moment of crisis you were trained to respond just as you had time and time again
This Psalm Points to a specific time and a particular context in the life of David
Lead In:
1 Sam. 17
David Battles with Goliath
David Kills Goliath
King Sual takes him away from his family
1 Sam 18
Saul places David in charge of the armies
David is incredibly successful where ever Saul sent him

The King sends to have David taken and David pretends to be insane
So he disguised his sanity before them, and acted insanely in their hands, and scribbled on the doors of the gate, and let his saliva run down into his beard.
The Achish says, why do you bring me a madman, I have plenty of them already in my presence and sends him away

David escapes into the cave of Adullam
He is there alone and his family hears of where he is
His brothers and his father’s household came to him there
The Bible states,
And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul, gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him about four hundred men.
And this is the Psalm David is writing to those who are with him
Everyone who was
In Distress
In Debt
and Bitter in Soul
Worship the Lord Verses 1-3
Worship the Lord Verses 1-3
David could have Wallowed and complained about his misery
And yet David starts out with
I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
Instead of complaining to God he chooses to Worship Him
David’s soul boasts in the Lord
Those who have been humbled with him will hear these boasts and rejoice
O magnify the Lord with me
Two types of Magnification
Microscope vs Telescope
Take Something Small and make it great
vs
Take something Great and massive but it is so far away you need to bring it closer
Bringing the people closer to God’s Sovereignty, Power, and Majesty
The problems were insignificant compared to the Greatness of God!
He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked I shall return there. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners;
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.” And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
Vs. 20
“It is to be eaten in a single house; you are not to bring forth any of the flesh outside of the house, nor are you to break any bone of it.
