Jesus Second Coming

Lesson 1
Introduction
1. Definition

Essential doctrine

This is super important
Essential doctrines are basic to our Christian walk.
As we study this subject there are three ways to look at scripture
1. Essential core belief (Non-negotiable)
2. Convictions – (Example: You refuse to lie on a job report)
1. Convictions are deeply held beliefs that guide a person’s actions, especially when tested.

Opinion

3. Opinion = A personal viewpoint or preference that can change and doesn’t necessarily involve right or wrong. (“I believe pastors should wear suits when preaching.”)
1. We can also have opinions about certain biblical beliefs.
2. In the parable of the Good Samaritan. Who is the Good Samaritan us or Jesus?

The doctrinal statement.

This doctrine describes the expected return of Jesus Christ at the end of time, when he will come to judge the world and usher in the fullness of his kingdom.
2. Key Passages
a. Daniel 7:13
Daniel 7:13 NIV
“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.
b. Matthew 24:30-31
Matthew 24:30 LEB
And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man arriving on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Matthew 24:31 LEB
And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect together from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other end of it.
c. Acts 1:11
Acts 1:11 NIV
“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
d. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
1 Thessalonians 4:16 NIV
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 NIV
After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
1 Thessalonians 4:18 NLT
So encourage each other with these words.
e. Hebrews 9:27-28
Hebrews 9:27 NLT
And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment,
Hebrews 9:28 NLT
so also Christ was offered once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him.
f. Revelation 22:20
Revelation 22:20 NLT
He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!
3. A Difference of Opinion

Timing of His Coming

Is it before the Tribulation? Called “Pre-Tribulation” view.
Is it in the middle? Called “Mid-Tribulation” view.
Is it after the Tribulation? Called “Post-Tribulation” view.
The problem for is that there are highly respected theologians that will this is correct and have compelling arguments.

Millennium

b. The 1000 Years. Also called the Millennium
Revelation 20:1 NLT
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven with the key to the bottomless pit and a heavy chain in his hand.
Revelation 20:2 NLT
He seized the dragon—that old serpent, who is the devil, Satan—and bound him in chains for a thousand years.
All of Revelation is 20 is critical in understanding the doctrine of last things.

Amillennialism

Amillennialism - This view is called “amillennial” because it maintains that there is no future millennium yet to come.

Postmillennialism

Postmillennialism - According to this view, Christ will return after the millennium.

Historic Premillennialism

Historic Premillennialism – This position says that Christ will come back beforethe millennium. After the tribulation. (Post-tribulation) (No Rapture but Second Coming)

Pretribulation Premillennialism

Pretribulation Premillennialism - This position says that Christ will come back beforethe millennium. But before the tribulation (First Rapture then tribulation then Second Coming). Also called Dispensational Premillennialism (The left behind series was build on this interpretation)

Fence sitting

Panmillennial it will pan out in the end. “Whatever God wills I am for it.”
The problem then becomes you avoid this subject.
Because you have to pick one to interpret the rest.
My story and why this is a crisis of belief.
1. It’s really 2 Second Comings
2. Why couldn’t the church go through the tribulation. It would be a time of testing.

My Essential Core Belief

Jesus will return bodily and gloriously to judge the living and the dead and to usher in His kingdom.

My Opinion

Pretribulation Premillennialism

Revelation 3:10 NLT
“Because you have obeyed my command to persevere, I will protect you from the great time of testing that will come upon the whole world to test those who belong to this world.
1 Thessalonians 4:16 NIV
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
