We began looking at a new series over the last few podcast episodes on Apologetics. Today, I want us to spend one more study on Genesis 1, having looked in our last study at the popular Day Age Theory, now I want us to take a moment to examine what is called the Gap Theory. This doctrine theorizes that in Genesis 1:1 God created the original world billions of years ago, but at some point between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2, Satan and his followers rebelled against God and was cast down to earth which of course they get from Revelation 12:7-9). This theory continues that when Satan was cast down to this earth, there was a catastrophic event that happened leaving this world “without form and void.” Thus, the world God had originally created was destroyed, hence the fossil record, and why we see God remaking the earth in six literal days starting in Genesis 1. So, let’s break this down.
To begin we must take notice that no one even considered this as a possibility until Thomas Chalmers, who lived from 1780 - 1884 AD, came up with it . Up until Mr. Chalmers no one considered there being a gap between Genesis 1:1-2 and Genesis 1:3ff. So right there “the Preacher” gives us insight into if this is right or wrong when Solomon declared…
9 That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun.
In other words, because this doctrine is “new” it means it never was a biblical point of view, or as the Hebrew writer put it…
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
The prophet Malachi says the same thing just in a little different way in Malachi 3:6…
6 For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.
And let us not forget what the powerful apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 14:33.
33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
However, just saying no one ever considered this doctrine before 1800’s isn’t proof enough for many so let’s continue looking at this and see if it falls short anywhere else.
The Gap Theory demands, as do some other false doctrines, that the Hebrew word “bara” which is translated as “created” in Genesis 1:1 and the Hebrew word “asah” which is typically translated as “made” in Genesis 1:25 are not interchangeable but rather have completely different meanings. The doctrine states that the word “bara” means to create from nothing whereas “asah” means “to make from what has been created.”
Now if this is the case, we should fine no biblical evidence demonstrating “bara” and “asah” talking about the same thing or used in the exact same way. However, as you might have already deduced, we find multiple examples wherein these words are without a doubt interchangeable.
We find it in Genesis 1:21 and Genesis 1:25.
21 So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
25 And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
We also read in Psalm 148:2, 5…
2 Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts…5 Let them praise the name of the Lord, For He commanded and they were created.”
6 You alone are the Lord; You have made heaven, The heaven of heavens, with all their host, The earth and everything on it, The seas and all that is in them, And You preserve them all. The host of heaven worships You.
Lastly, even Genesis 2:4 puts this to bed when God inspired Moses to write…
4 This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created [bara], in the day that the Lord God made [asah] the earth and the heavens
To be clear those that hold to the Gap Theory have a lot more “proofs” but if two of them are found to fail the rest are not worthy examining at this time. As I have stated in the past and in this recent series, God created the entire universe in six literal 24 hour days and no amount of human manipulation of the text can change what it actually is saying.
