The Woman (1-2)

Revelation 12:1–2 NASB95
A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; and she was with child; and she cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth.
The word "great" appears many times because this vision was so overpowering.
Appearance of the woman is a sign of her glorious position.
Genesis 1:1 NASB95
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Second woman of four mentioned in Revelation:
Jezebel
Woman Giving Birth
Harlot of Babylon
Bride of Christ
Description also mirrors Joseph's dream (a good example of an Old Testament illustration):
Genesis 37:9–11 NASB95
Now he had still another dream, and related it to his brothers, and said, “Lo, I have had still another dream; and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” He related it to his father and to his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have had? Shall I and your mother and your brothers actually come to bow ourselves down before you to the ground?” His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.

The Dragon (3-4)

Revelation 12:3–4 NASB95
Then another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads were seven diadems. And his tail *swept away a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child.
More about the symbolism in chapter 17.
Seven heads: seven kingdoms
Egypt
Assyria
Babylon
Medo-Persia
Greece
Rome
Future Kingdom of Antichrist
10 Horns: A 10-nation confederacy
Diadems: Seat of power
Stars in the heavens: angels, 1/3 of whom are deceived

The Rescue (5-6)

Revelation 12:5–6 NASB95
And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron; and her child was caught up to God and to His throne. Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she *had a place prepared by God, so that there she would be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days.
The Messiah is finally born, and Satan is ready to destroy Him immediately, but fails. Jesus resurrects and returns to heaven.
Israel, which has been targeted by Satan all along, will become the focus of all Satan's rage. God will intervene and save Israel.
Israel will possibly be hidden in the wilderness of the area just south of Israel.
Daniel 11:40–41 NASB95
“At the end time the king of the South will collide with him, and the king of the North will storm against him with chariots, with horsemen and with many ships; and he will enter countries, overflow them and pass through. “He will also enter the Beautiful Land, and many countries will fall; but these will be rescued out of his hand: Edom, Moab and the foremost of the sons of Ammon.
This miraculous hiding is 3.5 years long and corresponds to the last half of the Tribulation and the period where Jerusalem is occupied by the Gentiles.

The Battle (7-9)

Revelation 12:7–9 NASB95
And there was war in heaven, Michael and his angels waging war with the dragon. The dragon and his angels waged war, and they were not strong enough, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
Satan's unending struggle against God breaks out into full war. One last attempt to overtake heaven.
Battle initiated by Satan, possibly at the Rapture.
Michael is an angel who powerfully helps the people of God:
Daniel 10:12–13 NASB95
Then he said to me, “Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart on understanding this and on humbling yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to your words. “But the prince of the kingdom of Persia was withstanding me for twenty-one days; then behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia.
Daniel 12:1 NASB95
“Now at that time Michael, the great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people, will arise. And there will be a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued.
Jude 9 NASB95
But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”
1 Thessalonians 4:16 NASB95
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
Satan, having been cast down, now intensifies the suffering of earth.

The Declaration (10-12)

Revelation 12:10–12 NASB95
Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night. “And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death. “For this reason, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time.”

The Revenge (13-17)

Revelation 12:13–17 NASB95
And when the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child. But the two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly into the wilderness to her place, where she *was nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. And the serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood. But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and drank up the river which the dragon poured out of his mouth. So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.
