The Focus of the Home
Text: Psalm 37:3–6 (KJV)

Introduction:

I was going to preach this as a five part series, but the Lord had other plans. So As we conclude our journey through The Biblical Blueprint for the Home, we turn our attention to one final and essential aspect—focus.
Throughout this series, we've examined the foundation of the home, the framework of the home, and the fortress in the home.
But even with all those elements in place, without the right focus, a home will fall.
Many families begin well
—establishing their homes on truth, nurturing love, and fulfilling their roles in faithfulness.
But over time, distractions creep in.
The noise of the world grows louder.
Priorities shift.
Slowly, the spiritual vision of the home begins to blur.
Sports, school and society begin to take the wheel and start driving our focus
And what was once strong and stable begins to unravel—not from catastrophe, but from neglect.
If we want our homes to thrive and endure, we must guard our focus.
The psalmist David offers timeless wisdom for keeping our eyes—and our homes—set on the Lord.
Let us consider his counsel as we conclude this series on the Biblical blueprints for a Godly Home: The Focus of the Home.
The first thing we need to remember is our homes should be...

I. A Home Focused on Faith

“Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.” (v. 3)
Every home has to be built on something.
You can build on income, education, or even reputation—
but if your home is not focused on faith in God, the foundation will crumble when storms come.
Because income will disappear
Education ends when your mind stops working
and your reputation is so friagil, one strong wind of contriversy will topal your home
but if your home is focused on faith in God, it does not matter what the economy does or what your mind remembers, your home = your family will remain strong and stedfast
David lays out for us three things that will help us maintain a focus on faith
A. The Principle of Trust
Trusting in the Lord is not optional—it is essential.
Just as a builder trusts the blueprint, the believer must trust God’s plan.
Instead of getting agitated and all worked up by the fleeting prosperity of the wicked (v.1-2)
Trust in the Lord
You could say it like this, “Hey, stop looking at the world around you it does noting but distract and depress you, instead keep your eyes on God.”
A. The Principle of Trust
B. The Practice of Goodness
Faith doesn’t just believe—it behaves.
Doing what is right is evidence of a trusting heart
and it not only behaves right, it is benevolent
If there are wicked men in the world, if wickedness abounds around us, this is the more reason for our endeavouring to do good.
If others are doing evil, we should do good; if they are wicked, we cannot do a better work than to do good to them, for the best way of defeating the wickedness of the world is to do it good.
Helping someone that does not “deserve” help or being kind to someone that is unkind is not only right to do, but Jesus commands us to.
I think Christ said something to this fashion: Matthew 5:44–45 “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;”
A. The Principle of Trust
B. The Practice of Goodness
C. The Promise of Provision
So shalt thou dwell in the land (command to dwell)
David is saying, When you trust in God i.e have faith in God, He will not leave you nor forsake you.
The idea is, that if we abide with Him i.e dwell with Him, He promises us security and peace.
we should not worry ourselves beause of the wicked men upon the earth, and because they are successful,
we should be thankful for our inheritance we have in Christ Jesus, and partake gratefully of the blessings which we receive from the hand of God.
The Treasury of David, Volume 2: Psalms 27–57 (Exposition) “Very much of our outward depends upon the inward; where there is heaven in the heart there will be heaven in the house.”
And verily thou shall be fed. Marg., in truth or stableness.
The literal meaning would be, “Feed on truth.
The word rendered fed is here in the imperative mood.
It means to feed, as a flock; to feed upon anything in the sense of delighting in, or taking pleasure in anything, as if we found our support or sustenance in it;
and here it means, Feed on truth; that is, seek after truth; find delight in it; let it be the food of your souls.
And we know this because The word here rendered verily means truth:
and the meaning is, that we should seek after truth, and find find our support and comfort in that.
Application: Make prayer, Scripture, and spiritual discussions common in your home.
Let your children see that your family’s trust is not in the government, the paycheck, or your own strength—but in God alone.
Keep your faith in God, Do good, and lean on Him for all provsion and protection.

II. A Home Focused on Fellowship with God

“Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” (v. 4)
Trusting God is foundational to our focus
—but delighting in Him builds the intensity of our focus
A home focused only on duty becomes dry.
But a home filled with joy in the Lord becomes a place of refreshing fellowship.
A. The Rejoicing of His Presence
A delight in God means you don’t just obey Him—you enjoy Him.
Make God the joy and rejoicing of your spirit and your home.
Wicked men delight in carnal objects; do not envy them
Do not think they are happy
For they are finding temporay happiness in vain idols;
We are called here to look to our better delight
to many times we find the world having more joy in temperal things then Christians have in eternal things.
David is saying in a certain sense, imitate the wicked; they delight in their portion—take care to delight in yours, and instead of envying them you will pity them.
There can be no room for fretting if we remember that God is our delight.
Every name, attribute, word, or deed of God, should be delightful to us, and in meditating on it our soul should be as glad as a hog in mud
The meaning here is, that we should seek our happiness in God—in his being, his perfections, his friendship, his love.
A. The Rejoicing of His Presence
B. The Receipt of His Pleasure
“and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”
Families who delight in God will desire or ask, for nothing but what will please God;
Their will is subdued to God’s will, and now they may have what they will.
Our innermost desires is what David is talking about, not our casual wishes;
there are many things which your flesh might desire which grace would never permit us to ask for;
When you delight in God His desires become your desires
That is why Christ who was being still being God was made flesh, was tempted in all points like as we are and in the garden, He was able to proclaim, “not my will but thine will be done.”
He delighted in His Father therefore, His desire became His Fathers desire.
When we focus our homes on fellowship with God, the world will no longer dictate our desires, fashion trends, movies and electronics will not be the focus, the will of the Father will become our focus.
Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Are you fellowshiping with God?
What is dictating your desires?

III. A Home Focused on Following God’s Will

“Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” (v. 5)
Transition: Delight leads to direction.
But direction is no good if you do not carry it out.
I can trust my gps and I can seek directions from it, but if I dont follow those directions, most likely I will get lost or take way longer to get where I am going.
If we truly love the Lord, we’ll seek His will above our own.
The home must be focused not on personal plans, but on divine purpose.
A. Surrendered Plans
To “commit thy way” means not only to roll your current troubles and worries onto God, but our entire life should be committed onto God.
This includes your marriage, so when marriage problems arise, and they will, if you have already committed it to God, then He will take care of it
parenting, when your children go wayward, if you have already committed them to God, He will take care of it
finances, Same thing
and future, give it to God, He has got it.
If following His will is our focus, then we will have no problem surrendering our plans to Him.
A. Surrendered Plans
B. Sure Results
God never wastes a surrendered life.
He “shall bring it to pass”—what He starts, He finishes
(Philippians 1:6 “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”
Application: Hold family meetings to pray over decisions.
Let your children see that God’s will is not just for the preacher—it’s for every believer.
Teach them to seek His face before making choices.

IV. A Home Focused on Fruitful Testimony

“And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.” (v. 6)
A home that trusts, delights, and commits will naturally become a testimony to others.
Real Light cannot be hidden.
A godly home will shine in a dark world.
Christ even tells us to let our light shine before men that they may see our good works and glorify God in heaven.
If you have God as your focus then you will not be able to hide your light under a bushel
So the first thing we see here in verse 6 is we need to have a....
A. A Shining Testimony
“As the light..”
—clear, visible, unmistakable.
People should sense the presence of Christ in your home.
When people visit your home what do they see?
From the outside appearence
to the conversations
to the cleanliness
are all testimonies
most of your neighbors will never see the inside of your home but they can hear you screaming at your kids.
Our homes should be a shining testimony and when your focus is on God and following him you will shine has the light that you are to be.
A. A Shining Testimony
B. A Just Example
“Judgment as the noonday”
—your example will guide others.
Your family’s stand for truth will influence those around you.
what you are speaks louder then what you say
the world is watching you
A. A Shining Testimony
B. A Just Example
C. A Visible Difference
“He shall bring forth thy righteousness...”
Having a shining testimony and being a just example
brings about a visible difference between your family and a family that has their focus on things of this world.
The righteous family cannot blend into the world.
God will cause you to stand out.
Live with integrity.
Serve together.
Witness together.
Be known not for your decorations, but your devotion
not for your meals, but your ministry.

Conclusion:

What is the focus of your home?
Is it faith in the Lord?
Is it fellowship with Him in joy?
Is it following His will?
Is it a fruitful testimony to others?
If your focus is anywhere else, the picture will always be blurry.
But when your eyes are fixed on Christ, your home becomes a reflection of heaven on earth.
Make that your focus today—not just with your lips, but with your life.
Perhaps the Lord is calling you to come back to center—to refocus your home on Him.
Or maybe today is the day of salvation for you.
The first step in building a godly home is surrendering your life to Christ.
He alone can save, strengthen, and sustain.
Let’s not merely start strong—let’s finish well.
Let’s keep our focus where it belongs: on the Lord.
Husband’s why not grab your wife and children and come down to an old fashion alter today and re-focus
widows and widowers come this morning and re-focus
divorcees, single men and ladies, come this morning and re-focus
proclaim today: Joshua 24:15 “... but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
