The Abiding Love of Christ: Our Source of Peace

Peace in His Presence: Discovering the Promise of John 14

As we gather today, let's focus our hearts and minds on the comforting words of Jesus recorded in John 14:23-29. Here, Jesus offers us timeless truths that speak directly to the core of our lives. In a world filled with uncertainties and upheaval, this passage reminds us of three key aspects we can hold onto: Peace, Presence, and Promises.

1. Presence: Practicing His Presence Daily

Jesus begins by reminding us to invite Him into our lives, saying in John 14:23, "Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them."

a. Pursue His Word

The first step in practicing His presence is to be rooted in His Word. Just like a tree that draws nourishment from deep waters, we need to actively engage with the Scriptures daily. This nourishes our soul and keeps us aligned with His purpose.

b. Personal Prayer

Prayer is our personal lifeline to experiencing the presence of Jesus. Spend dedicated time each day in conversation with God, inviting Him to reveal His will and His way in your life. By doing so, you create a continual awareness of His presence that permeates every moment.
The Bible is like a telescope. If a man looks through his telescope, then he sees worlds beyond; but if he looks at his telescope, then he does not see anything but that. The Bible is a thing to be looked through, to see that which is beyond; but most people only look at it; and so they see only the dead letter.
Phillips Brooks (Bishop of Massachusetts)
Every morning, I carve out time to sit in silence with my Bible open. One chilly sunrise, feeling the weight of worries about work and relationships, I read Matthew 6:34, where Jesus reminds us not to worry about tomorrow. In that moment, I poured out my heart to God, sharing my fears and hopes. That sweet exchange felt like a warm hug from my Father, reminding me that each day is a new gift.

Life Application:

Dedicate time each morning to read a passage from the Bible and speak transparently to God about your day. Watch how your perspective and peace shift when you start with Him.

2. Peace: Persevering with His Peace

In John 14:27, Jesus offers, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives."

a. Possess His Peace

Unlike the fleeting peace the world provides, the peace Jesus gives is steadfast and eternal. Embrace this divine peace by resting in His sovereignty, knowing He is in control even when life feels out of control.
We are not at peace with others because we are not at peace with ourselves, and we are not at peace with ourselves because we are not at peace with God.
Thomas Merton (Trappist Monk and Writer)

b. Protect Your Heart

Guard your heart against anxiety, worry, and fear by focusing on His promises rather than prevailing circumstances. Allow the peace of Christ to rule in your heart and guide your decisions and relationships.
For several years a woman had been having trouble getting to sleep at night because she feared burglars. One night her husband heard a noise in the house so he went downstairs to investigate. When he got there he did find a burglar. Good evening said the man of the house. I am pleased to see you. Come upstairs and meet my wife. She has been waiting 10 years to meet you.

Life Application:

When worry arises, turn to His Word for reassurance. Memorize verses about His peace and declare them over your life whenever fear strikes.

3. Promises: Commit to His Promises

Finally, Jesus reassures us in verse 29, “I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.”

a. Proclaim His Promises

Hold firm to the promises God has placed in your life, speaking them aloud to fuel your faith. Let these promises be your anchor in times of uncertainty, bringing hope and assurance.

b. Partner in His Plans

Understanding that God's promises are part of His larger plan allows us to trust even when the path ahead is unclear. Partner with Him by stepping out in faith, knowing His promises are sure and true.
In Genesis, Abraham’s faith was tested multiple times, yet he always remembered God’s promises. One poignant moment was when he was asked to sacrifice Isaac. Abraham’s willingness showed his deep commitment to God, believing that God could still fulfill His promise even in the darkest of moments. This teaches us that commitment to God’s promises can often mean trusting in Him even when we face trials, allowing His faithfulness to prevail through our uncertainties.

Life Application:

Keep a journal of God’s promises and record instances of His faithfulness. Use this as a testament to encourage yourself and others about God’s unchanging nature.
As we close today, remember that the path to peace, presence, and promises is an active journey. Jesus offers us a life of fullness; it’s up to us to embrace His words and walk in His way. Let’s go forth, committing to practice His presence, receive His peace, and stand firm on His promises.
God promises to keep his people, and he will keep his promise.
Charles Spurgeon

Prayer

Father God, as we close out this time of worship, help us to claim your peace, presence, and promises. May we embrace you word, walk in your Spirit, and never doubt your promises.
Amen.
