Philippians 2 verse 1-11

today we are going to look at the example of Humility

that was exemplified by our Lord Jesus HImself

Do any of you find it hard to be humble?

humble- to assign yourself a lower spot ——to reduce or bring lower

to make less important — not less valuebale

I know I do

How many of you think your right all the time?

the other day I told a co worker (around these lines)

I have this problem where I always feel like I am right

and do I am very passonate about what our company should do

but the problem is , I am always right

and we suffer when our branch does not listen to me

do you think that was humble?

Now are you the same way ?

Do you think that your always right ?

Do you think that your the most important person in your family ?

What if you took a step back and put other peoples needs before your own

What if you took a step back and started to serve others instead of being served

what if instead of complaining that you didnt get your way

you submitted..…

lets dig into the scripture to see how we

can become more humble

like our savior

Paul has just went over

to live is Christ and to Die is gain

He just encouraged the philippians

that their manner of life

would be worthy of the gospel

to strive together for the gospel of Jesus Christ

that Jesus died for sinners and rose from the dead

and He is calling everyone to repent and follow him

for the forgivness of sin

good news

you can be right with God

by Faith in Christ

he finished the chapter

in the plea to not be frieghtened by opponents

those who will persecute you

and even try to kill you

dont be afraid

because you are actually called to suffer for Christ

starting in verse 2

paul turns to the need for encouragment for the church

Philippians 2:1–4 ESV

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

this is the togetherness of the church

God wants us to be family like that

were in Christ and sharing in the Love of Christ

and then paul writes, do nothing from selfish ambition or conciet

this means self serving motives

do not get jealous of eachother,

dont compete with eachother,

we are a family not a business ..…

you see this a lot when people try to jockey for ministry position

they look at others as competition

or people try to compare…

do you ever compare yourself to others…

well im not as good as so and so

but at least im not as bad as so and so .…

no, no, no,

we are not employees or athletes trying to gain position

we are a family of sinners that need a savior

instead

with Humility ...… making ourselves low

let us count others as more significant than ourselves

count others above you

this is key to becoming humble like Christ

We can often look at others as less than

to make ourselves feel better ..…

—-look at so and so

why are they doing that

they are doing it wrong

think about all the times you have criticized other people behind their backs

Matthew 7:1–2 ESV

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.

the way you judge others is the way you will be judged

is the implication

now let me ask you

How do you want God to judge you ?

with grace

so if you want God to treat you with grace,

why would you treat others with such strict judgments

if you see your brother in sin

dont point and laugh

but get on your knees and pray

other people and their intrests

need to be of higher priority

in our lives

now! we must look to our own intrests

but also that of our neighbor

start putting this into practice with your family

count your mothers intrests as more important

your siblings,

your friends

Philippians 2:5–8 ESV

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

again we see paul emphasize the mind…

we need to fundementally change the way we think.…

our sinful nature is put me first

the spiritual nature is put others first

we are to look to Jesus for our example

Look at Jesus humility

we see here the ultimate form of humility

in the second person of the trinity

Jesus Christ

jesus was in the form of God

which means the essance of

the verse states that Jesus was in essance and nature God

He was always God

even before he became a baby in a manger

Jesus being God, full in diety

took on human flesh

but did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped

although He was equal with God the father

He didnt hold onto it and stick His chest out

you need to be confident in who you are ,

in order to be humble

Jesus knew He was the son of God

He did not need to prove anything to anyone

you need to be confident in who you are

as a child of God

in order to make yourself of less importance in your own eyes

and something key to remember

Humility is not thinking less of yourself

its thinking of yourself less

if anything your problem is that you think less of yourself ,,,

in Christ you are

1 Peter 2:9 NKJV

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

Have confidence in who you are in Christ

that will give you the ability to be humble in Him

Now

in the flesh he emptied himself

not of his diety

but by adding on human flesh to himself

by taking on the form of a servant

he came low

into his creation

think of it this way

if a king leaves his kingdom

and lives in the poorest area

He is still the king

but he decided to humble himself and live with the poorest people

this is what JEsus did

He was in Glory with His father

and humbled himself

to enter into his creation

and take on the limitations of a poor human being

while still attaining His attributes of God

He was truly God

and truly man

Not only did he enter his creation

but He humbled himself even to

partake in the cross

to be abused , mocked, and recieve the wrath of His father

in your place

do you think that our God

considered you as more important than Himself...… ?

we can look to Him

and see His love and humility

and we can use His example to

love others

Philippians 2:9–11 ESV

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

the ultimate form of humility

recieves the ultimate exaltation

His Humility was so great because He is God

and has every right to elevate Himself

1 Peter 5:6 ESV

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,

Jesus knew that His father would do the exalting

and we need to know this as well

The father has given Jesus

the name above every names

and at His name

every knee will bow and worship

every knee means every knee

in heaven, on earth , and in the grave

every person will be resurected and every knee will bend

and every tounge will confess that Jesus is Lord

to the Glory of God the father

everyone will be humbled

this is a reality for everyone in here

you will bow your knee before Jesus

the only question is

will He know who you as a friend ?

the biggest problem with sinful man

is our pride

the opposite of humility

in our pride

we want to call the shots, make the rules, be the king over our lives

and when I tell you,

you need to repent and believe in Jesus

turn to Him for life

many people dont want to humble themselves

make them selves low

and put their life and who they are

under the authority of Christ

you have the option

to bend the knee now

and be saved from the judgment of God

I beg you to put your belief in Jesus now

give Him your life

and learn humility that leads to salvation

by putting others above yourself,

looking to Jesus as your example

and bending your knee in worship

John 3:30 ESV

He must increase, but I must decrease.”
