I. Where did Joshua come from?

A. If you just picked up the book of Joshua, you would think he just came out of nowhere

1. Maybe a power struggle after Moses died

2. Someone looking to fill the void of leadership

B. Thankfully, Moses had given us the backstory in his books

1. He is mentioned 27 times by Moses in Exodus, Numbers and Deuteronomy

2. What those mentions tell us is important

II. Joshua was Mentored/Discipled by Moses [This is title slide, bring up each point with the verse below it on 1 click A-F and on F will new click for 2ndverse, click for 3rd verse]

A. Moses identified and began to raise up Joshua early

1. Exodus 17:9 So Moses said to Joshua, "Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand."

2. Moses had already identified Joshua as a key younger leader – he didn’t go looking for him, he just said to him

3. This is very early in the journey from Egypt

4. Amalek comes out to fight them before they got to Mt. Sinai

5. Moses prayed, Aaron and Hur held up his hands, Joshua led the battle

B. There was an eye towards Joshua’s ultimate leadership from the beginning

1. Exodus 17:14 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write this in a book as a memorial and recite it to Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven."

2. He had just defeated them, but was looking ahead to future things

C. Moses took Joshua with Him wherever he went

1. Exodus 24:13 So Moses arose with Joshua his servant, and Moses went up to the mountain of God.

2. No one else allowed on the Mt, but Moses, and Moses took Joshua

3. Like Jesus – that they would be with Him

D. Moses entrusted Joshua with strategic, important leadership

1. Exodus 33:11 Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses returned to the camp, his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.

2. Going into spy out the land Numbers 13

E. He corrected Joshua and taught him humility

1. Taught him humility, right priorities

2. 70 who also received of the spirit who was on him and 2 who had remained in the camp

3. Numbers 11:28-29 Then Joshua the son of Nun, the attendant of Moses from his youth, said, "Moses, my lord, restrain them." But Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD'S people were prophets, that the LORD would put His Spirit upon them!"

F. He commissioned Joshua before the people

1. Deuteronomy 31:7 Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance.

2. Deuteronomy 31:23 Then He commissioned Joshua the son of Nun, and said, "Be strong and courageous, for you shall bring the sons of Israel into the land which I swore to them, and I will be with you."

3. Deuteronomy 34:9 Now Joshua the son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.

1. Maybe some of you are interested in being better trained/equipped to make disciples

2. Maybe you would like someone to come walk alongside of you

C. SMI is a huge part of how we do this with young people

1. Training

2. Engaging them with God

3. Connecting them with spiritual mentors – D group leaders

4. Exposing them to ministry

5. So this is very important to us

D. So we fund this differently than almost anything else you have experienced

1. These are our young people

2. We are bringing them to you to support: Prayer and financial

3. Each one $500 - $50 max to any one

4. Prayer is the most important thing

5. Don’t need money today, but before they go June 15
