Patience

Colossians 3:12 CSB
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,
Patience definition - the ability to accept or endure something. (To tolerate)

Jesus was Patient

Sometimes as people we have a hard time being patient.
We do not like to have to go through things that we don’t want to.
Can you guess what the biggest thing for me was that i really didn’t want to do when I was your age?
It was shopping for clothes.
How many of you enjoy shopping?
I really didn’t like doing that. However, it was something that my mom made me do.
she always told me that I needed to be patient and that it would go faster.
I don’t believe it went faster, but it keep me out of trouble.
What is something you all don’t like to do that you have to do anyway? (all yell at once)
Sometimes, I have a hard time being patient with people.
If I tell them something, and they don’t do it, or do it a different way, I can get frustrated.
If they mess up, I sometimes get frustrated.
But Jesus tells us that we should not hold onto that frustration, instead, we should be patient with them.
Matthew 18:21 CSB
21 Then Peter approached him (Jesus) and asked, “Lord, how many times must I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? As many as seven times?”
Peter was wondering how many times he is supposed to forgive someone.
Lord, how long am I supposed to be patient with them before I stop.
As many as 7 times?
Peter was thinking he was being super patient with people by giving them 7 chances at something.
That is pretty forgiving. That is pretty patient.
However, it is not patient enough for God’s standards.
How many times do you think God wants us to forgive others. How long do you think God wants us to be patient for?
Look at His answer.
Matthew 18:22 CSB
22 “I tell you, not as many as seven,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven.
What is 70 X 7? - 490
Who is going to keep track of 490 times that you were patient with someone? (no-one)
What is Jesus saying? - Just keep being patient!
Don’t get mad, don’t get frustrated. Just be patient.

The Patient King

Matthew 18:23–25 CSB
23 “For this reason, the kingdom of heaven can be compared to a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began to settle accounts, one who owed ten thousand talents was brought before him. 25 Since he did not have the money to pay it back, his master commanded that he, his wife, his children, and everything he had be sold to pay the debt.
The King wanted his money back that was owed to him.
When he brought in the servant who owed him alot of money, he found out that the servant couldn’t pay.
So, what did the king decide to do?
He was going to sell them and everything that they had to get his money back.
It is the kings right to get his money back, correct?
But look at what the servant asked of the king.
Matthew 18:26 CSB
26 “At this, the servant fell facedown before him and said, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you everything.’
The servant asked the king to be patient with him.
To put up with the debt a little longer.
The servant agreed to pay the king back everything, but to please give him more time.
How do you think this king responded to the servant who was asking him to be patient?
How many times did Jesus tell Peter to forgive? 70X7!
Matthew 18:27 CSB
27 Then the master of that servant had compassion, released him, and forgave him the loan.
The king did not simply show patience with the servant.
Instead, he completely forgave the entire debt.
He didn’t sell him or his family or everything that he owned.
He forgave the whole thing.
That is what we are supposed to do as well.
We are supposed to show that kind of patience towards everyone!

Conclusion:

Are you showing that same patience?
This was with a king and a servant who owed money.
Think about this…
Who is God? - The true KING.
Who are we? - His servants.
Is God patient with us. (YES)
He is so patient with us that he keeps offering us the chance to receive forgiveness for everything that we do that is not right. (sin)
God continually forgives - He is patient with us.
Because of God’s patience, we are supposed to be patient with others as well.
Let’s read Col 3:12 together one last time!
Colossians 3:12 CSB
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,
We understand that we are God’s chosen ones who are holy and dearly loved!
He is providing forgiveness to you from all of your sins that you have ever or will ever commit and He is providing you a ticket to go to heaven, if you only accept it.
Have you trusted in Jesus?
If you have, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
If you haven’t, would you trust Jesus today?
It is simple. You just have to believe that…
You are a sinner and that you can’t save yourself.
Bible says that that wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus our Lord.
That Jesus died for you and took your punishment for sin, was buried and 3 days later rose from the grave.
Romans 10:9 CSB
9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Close your eyes, bow your heads. If you know that you are saved, will you raise your hands?
same with those who are not sure.
find someone to talk to.
