5 And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.
Peter sees this display of glory and power before him, and he want to make it last. He wants to live here.
Real application: lesson
There is a temptation when God gives us glimpse of his glory in miracles, blessings, things to support us, and pick us back up.
but we often feel so under water that wrap around them like a drowning cat. We try to make last the temporary rests.
Do you remember Israel in the wilderness? They were starving and God provides food and water and cares for them. Btu when they get to the promise land they see the enemies and the are afraid. The want to go back to Egypt
We want to live in the wilderness. and we cling to blessing and circumstances that were ment to remind us of Gods provision.
See Peter is starting to understand he sees that Jesus is the messiah, and that he is chosen by God, that he is the Son of God. But they again only see part of the picture.
9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”
He and the disciples miss the point, there are excited again, because there thinking “wow, this is better than we thought. Our messiah is God, he will surly defeat the romans and bring peace.”
This is why jesus didn't want them to share what they had seen, because they didn't understand why jesus had come. they kept thinking on an earthly level.
See the Disciples were thinking to small, they could only see from an earthly perspective. They thought the glory of the messiah would be his earthly power and kingdom. But Jesus isn't glorious because of any earthly robes, or titles.
What the disciples didn't understand was that the glory of God was going to shine forth again, on a different hill, with different robes
So Jesus is Glorious weather he is adorned with gold or thorns
As pastor Jason wrote in his sermon on this passage
There is a ordinary glory to Jesus he is The God man incarnate,
“He is just as
glorious clothed in
blood as he is clothed
in light.”
they didn't understand until after Jesus resurrection just how much better a messiah Jesus was.
We see them here Right away back to being camping managers, trying to figure out the timeline, there trying to see how close they are to Jesus coming and brining the revolution, the defeat of Rome. So they start to ask Jesus about Eli
The Gospel bids us come and die, and we spend our whole lives learn to.
Let us leave this place and do war
