MPS: David is Great, Jesus is Greater
MPT: David is a great king, but there are cracks in his kingship. He will act for political reasons, put himself before the sheep and look a lot like the other worldly kings. Jesus, the true king, never motivated by political or personal gain but came to serve, not to be served and lay his life down as a ransom for many
Problem: a great moment in Israel’s history, the tribes are united, a just king with a shepherd’s heart is ruling, the last stronghold of the Canaanites is taken and the current threat against the people, the Philistines is quenched
But there are hints of imperfection- cracks in the foundation
the man who has been a shepherd for Israel will make decisions that benefit him but are not in the interest of his people.
He will begin to look like the kings around him

Do you think you are a king

because you compete in cedar?

Did not your father eat and drink

and do justice and righteousness?

David does not inquire of the LORD but takes Jerusalem for political reasons
David begins to look like other kings around him
David names a city after himself to establish his rule
David has a cedar palace built for him just like every real king needs
David gets for himself concubines, acting according to customs that were acceptable to people then, but are not before God.
God uses imperfect people and worked through David
because David was a shadow of what was to come
Gospel:

These hints, so early in the reign of David, tell us that the journey of hope does not finish here. There is yet one, Jesus Christ, who will always act in the best interests of his people. He will not forge allegiances for his own good or accumulate wealth or live in palaces of cedar. He will come not to be served but to serve and give his life a ransom for many (
