Last week we left off on Jonathan warning David of Sauls anger and plans to kill David and Jonathan and David pretty much say goodbye to one another because David is no longer welcome in the kings presents.
READ 1 Samuel 21
Verse 1, Nob was a city North East of Jerusalem it was an important religious city , It was a central city were many priest served that had fled Shiloh after the Philistines invaded and destroyed the sanctuary there. So as David begins to flee he actually goes to the right place which was the house of God.
Verse 2, Clearly this priest Ahimelech knew nothing of the conflict between David and Saul. It was strange that David traveled alone and we can imagine that David look tired and maybe afraid. AND now David starts to make the mistakes. HE lies about the King ordering him to some business. He uses this lie to keep Ahimelech quite about his business in this city.
Its pretty easy to understand why David would have lied at this moment he was trying to survive and im sure he was terrified and paranoid. Im not sure I would have done anything different in this situation, David will come to deeply regret this lie.
Verse 4, At this time in history the tabernacle of the Lord had a table that held twelve loaves of bread, symbolizing Gods continued fellowship with Israel. So common bread could be eaten by anyone and Holy bread was only to be consumed by the clean, so there were certain cleanliness requirements before eating this Holy bread. The Holy bread was know as the bread of the presence and it is to be eaten before the Lord in His house.
Ahimelech would have technically been breaking practice by allowing David to eat this bread but Jesus later uses this story to show how what he did by feeding David was the right thing because no ritual or practice than someones hunger and need.
Verse 7, Doeg was potentially there on some sort of military service requirements by the King.
Verese 9, Is CRAZY David had FORGOTTEN , he had forgotten what God had delivered him from in the past. HE grabs the sword of the very Giant that thousands of men wouldn’t dare step foot in front of him. BUT God allowed David to kill him with just a sling and a stone and if you remember he then took Goliaths sword and cut his head off. HOW in the world did David not look at this Sword and be reminded of the God who protects and the God who sustains and the God who delivers over our enemies and the God who ta,kes what the enemy meant for evil and turns it for Good.
Verse 10, So David goes to a city called Gath which is a Philistine city thinking he could hide but he is immediately recognized because if you remember David had grown to be very famous so of course they knew who he was and now he was in a really dangerous situation because he had killed there champion and where they just gonna let him go?
David quickly forgot about Gods faithfulness and all he had protected him from . And many times where just like David, Our trust in God is conditional meaning when things are good and life seems to be going our way we find it easy to trust the Lord and even worship him, But when life throws us the curve ball the God who we put so much trust and faith in suddenly it becomes not enough and we panic and become ridden with fear and anxiety and we run around in caos trying to make something happen own our own strength and we end up a mess. God IS ENOUGH for you. His plan is enough, HIS protection is enough.
