Reading of the Word
Reading of the Word
When Jesus came back to Capernaum a few days later, it was heard that He was at home.
And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer space, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them.
And some people came, bringing to Him a man who was paralyzed, carried by four men.
And when they were unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and after digging an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralyzed man was lying.
And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
But some of the scribes were sitting there and thinking it over in their hearts,
“Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins except God alone?”
Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were thinking that way within themselves, said to them, “Why are you thinking about these things in your hearts?
Which is easier, to say to the paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’?
But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralyzed man,
“I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet, and go home.”
And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
Prayer of Illumination
Prayer of Illumination
Gracious God,
As we open Your Word today, shine Your light into our hearts. Clear away distractions, soften our resistance, and open our ears to hear what Your Spirit is saying. Give us understanding that goes deeper than knowledge—a wisdom that leads to transformation. May we not just hear Your truth but be changed by it.
Shape us, Lord, by the power of Your Word.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Introduction:
Introduction:
Have you ever stood up after sitting too long and realized your leg had fallen asleep? That hobbling, unstable moment gives us a tiny glimpse into what paralysis might feel like.
Personal Experience: Walking with a Brace
In 2007, I had a 13-hour back surgery. When I woke up, I couldn’t move or feel my left foot. The nerves were damaged, and I was told I might never walk again. But by the grace of God, I did.
To this day, I wear a brace on that foot. It keeps it flat so I don’t trip when I walk. It’s a constant reminder of what I’ve lost—but also of what I’ve gained.
I walk with a limp—but I also walk with hope. Because I shouldn’t be walking at all.
Every step I take is a small miracle, proof that Jesus met me in my weakness. He didn’t take away all the damage, but He gave me the strength to keep going. And sometimes, that’s the greater miracle.
Today, we’ll hear about that kind of hope—the kind that walks even when it limps, that believes even when the road is hard, and that trusts Jesus when we don’t know how the story ends. In our passage, a paralyzed man can’t get to Jesus without help—and what his friends do is shocking, bold, and inspiring. Their actions remind us that when people need Jesus, nothing should stand in the way—not crowds, not roofs, not even social norms. These faithful friends show us what it means to tear through obstacles to bring someone to Jesus—and challenge us to do the same.
1. Faith Finds a Way (Teamwork & Persistence)
1. Faith Finds a Way (Teamwork & Persistence)
The friends carried the man together—none could have done it alone.
Just as one person couldn’t carry the stretcher alone, it takes a devoted team to bring others to Jesus. Your presence and unique gifts truly matter in this mission! 🌟
They refused to give up when the door was blocked. Instead, they found a way around the blocked door. Teamwork and persistence are essential when helping others meet Jesus.
This man was suffering and needed help, showcasing relentless determination—he had to see Jesus. His desperate cry revealed the depth of his faith and his acknowledgment of his need. 🙏
Application: Don’t give up on people. Work together in prayer, in service, and in invitation.
2. Faith Gets Creative (Thinking Outside the Box)
2. Faith Gets Creative (Thinking Outside the Box)
When the front door was closed, they opened up the roof!
Their faith didn’t settle for obstacles—it found an unconventional solution. It found another way.
When the obvious path is blocked, bold faith looks for new possibilities. These friends didn’t give up; they broke through barriers to get someone to Jesus. We’re called to embrace that same determined, creative faith.
The nursing home ministry has stretched my thinking in ways I never imagined. I’ve never stepped this far outside the box in all my years of ministry. But God is challenging me to try new things—to take bold steps of faith. If something doesn’t work, we learn and move forward. If it does, we use it as a tool to lead people to Jesus.
Visiting the college on prospective student day was a step beyond the church walls—thinking outside the usual approach. I didn’t go to promote the church; I went to ask a simple question: 'What’s the one thing you need most during this transition?' Almost every student gave the same answer—they need someone to walk alongside them, to encourage and guide them. By showing that kind of love and support, we have the opportunity to lead many of them to Jesus—right in the middle of their fear, stress, and anxiety.
Their goal was clear: to bring the man into the presence of Jesus. Their unwavering faith empowered them to triumph over any challenges ahead.
Application: What barriers keep people from Jesus today? Fear, doubt, bad church experiences? Get creative in how you invite and love them.
3. Faith Focuses on the Soul (Jesus Heals What Matters Most)
3. Faith Focuses on the Soul (Jesus Heals What Matters Most)
Jesus first forgives the man’s sins—then heals his body.
Jesus looked past the physical disability and saw the man’s deeper need.
Sin is the of all our pain and sicknesses.
Pain entered the world through the fall, and while not all suffering is caused by personal sin, sometimes the two are connected. In this man’s case, that may have been true—especially since Jesus began by forgiving his sins before addressing his physical condition.
We desperately need the touch of Jesus to heal our sin-sick souls! Nothing else will do!
The way to alleviate our pain is to address its root - pardon for sin strikes at the heart of all diseases.
People do not need a bandaid approach, they need to address the root cause of the issue at hand.
“The bed had borne the man: now the man bore the bed.” -Samuel Logan Brengle
When dealing with my back, I spoke to a pastor about the decision I had to make about having a 3rd back surgery.
He did as Jesus instructed the paralytic: He rose, took up his bed, and walked home.
There is profound spiritual significance to this.
This moment illustrates how, through Christ’s power, we are lifted from the grip of sin into the fullness of new life.
No longer bound to his bed in paralysis, this man is now set free—healed and made whole.
The scribes and Pharisees tried to divert attention from Jesus by questioning His authority, rather than acknowledging His power to heal and forgive. Their intent wasn’t to seek truth but to stir up trouble.
Jesus instantly sensed their presence by the atmosphere in the house. They didn’t need to say a word—He perceived their thoughts and saw through their agenda.
One day He was teaching, and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the Law sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing.
The words “thinking it over in their hearts” says a lot about the reality of who Jesus is.
And they were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Instead of pointing people toward the miracle-working Savior, the religious leaders tried to redirect attention to theological arguments, missing the wonder of who Jesus truly is.
They were concerned about their self-righteousness and authority being overshadowed by His influence. Jesus was wanting the Pharisees and scribes to recognize that the authority he was acting under was given by His heavenly Father.
Jesus’ influence captured people’s attention, attracting them from everywhere. The Pharisees came to question and challenge His claims, miracles, and teachings.
They resorted to their typical reasoning to try to stop Him: “He is blaspheming.” This would become the first and last accusation they used against Him.
But truth overcomes their distractions.
And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not grasp it.
The Messiah stood right before them, yet their minds were closed and their hearts hardened, preventing them from seeing Him as the light. In their blindness, Satan allowed them to be swallowed by darkness.
Jesus aimed to show the incredible power of God, redirecting the focus back to glorifying Him. He overcame the obstacles they created to distract from His divine work.
The physical healing amazed the crowd, but the miracle that mattered to Jesus was the spiritual healing.
The Pharisees and Scribes witnessed the undeniable power of God, compelling them to recognize and glorify His greatness.
This moment reflects the profound impact of divine intervention, revealing how even those resistant to faith can be moved to acknowledge the reality of God when confronted with unmistakable evidence.
Physical healing is temporary; spiritual healing is eternal.
My foot has not been healed on this side of heaven. But healing is coming! One day, when I receive my new glorified body, this foot will receive total healing through Jesus.
We must guide others toward spiritual healing by bringing them to Jesus. As they are figuratively lowered before Christ, we trust that God will move in their hearts, restoring them to wholeness.
The healing brought transformation—restoring what was broken and breathing new life into the man. It infused him with renewed strength and a restored sense of purpose. No longer dependent on his bed for support, he embarked on a new journey where Christ became his foundation, empowering him to overcome. Where hopelessness and failure once ruled, this healing ushered in hope and a future shaped by divine grace.
Application: Don’t just pray for temporary fixes in your friends’ lives. Pray they’ll meet Jesus, who brings eternal healing.
Conclusion:
Conclusion:
We live in a world filled with individuals trapped on stretchers—lost, broken, spiritually paralyzed—and they will not reach Jesus unless someone is willing to tear through the roof. Will you be that friend? Will you take up the corner of someone’s stretcher and carry them to His feet? Jesus is in the business of forgiving, healing, and restoring lives, but He relies on us to bring others into His presence.
As we depart today, let this question echo in your heart: What obstacles will you dismantle this week for the sake of someone else’s faith? The world is crying out for those courageous enough to break through barriers—will you answer the call and fight to bring someone into the life-changing embrace of Jesus?

Lord Jesus,
Thank You for calling us beyond the walls of comfort and tradition. You’re always leading us to people in need—those searching for hope, guidance, and love. Open our eyes to see them the way You do, and give us the courage to ask the right questions, to listen with compassion, and to walk beside them with grace.
May we not be discouraged by closed doors but be inspired to find new ways to reach others with Your love. Use our creativity, our efforts, even our failures, to bring people closer to You. Let every step we take outside the box be a step toward someone’s breakthrough.
Help us be the encouragers, the guides, the hands and feet of Christ to those navigating fear, stress, and uncertainty. And in all we do, may Your name be lifted high.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
