What is the messiah?
What is the messiah?
messiah is a jewish term that is introduced in the Old testament
Messiah:
Lexham Theological Wordbook χριστός
מַשִׁיַח (māšîaḥ, “anointed one”) is translated by the Greek term christos
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:
And the government shall be upon his shoulder:
And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God,
The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end,
Upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom,
To order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice
From henceforth even for ever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
What did the jews think the messiah would be?
What did the jews think the messiah would be?
In Judaism, the Messiah is envisioned as a divinely appointed redeemer who will establish a restored kingdom of Israel, gathering dispersed Jews at the end of days
the Messiah is expected to be a political and military leader who would defeat Israel's enemies and usher in an era of peace and prosperity
But what does Mark 1:1 say
1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
There are two parts, Jesus is the messiah, and the son of God, and the second part is so Important because it defines what kind of messiah jesus is.
The disciples at this point are worn out, they are worried about all the thing jesus has just told them awaits him, aka the cross. And there hopes and dreams of a end to roman oppression have been rebuked by jesus. They are still only seeing half the picture, They are half blind.
But Jesus is going to open there eyes, and though they wont totally understand what he his doing until after the cross. This is event changed everything.
1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There are some here of them that stand by, who shall in no wise taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God come with power.
What is jesus referring to?
Where in Mark have we seen the Kingdom of God?
It is used 14 times in mark and describes to be a place or reality in which God rules over a people who are his, jesus often defines this kingdom in his parables by its attributes of righteousness.
It is the presence of Gods power in the person and work of jesus
However jewish audiences would have seen this phrase as a proclamation of the coming messianic kingdom, while true, there idea was of an earthly deliverance. they would see this as a proclamation that the messiahs victory over there enemies was soon to happen.
And it did on a cross at Calvary, but that is not what jesus ment in this instance. As we know jesus is the messiah he brings the kingdom of heaven, as the king where ever he goes he brings the kingdom of heaven and we see this in Mark 1:15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
he is taking about himself, he is saying they will see him come in power. but what does he mean
, and thats what we are going to see today.
So lets jump into our text
2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
What does transfigured mean?
(metamorphoō): vb.; ≡ Str 3339; TDNT 4.755—1. LN 13.53 change, transform the essential nature of something (
9 “As I looked,
thrones were placed,
and the Ancient of Days took his seat;
his clothing was white as snow,
and the hair of his head like pure wool;
his throne was fiery flames;
its wheels were burning fire.
10 A stream of fire issued
and came out from before him;
a thousand thousands served him,
and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him;
the court sat in judgment,
and the books were opened.
1 Bless the Lord, O my soul!
O Lord my God, you are very great!
You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
2 covering yourself with light as with a garment,
stretching out the heavens like a tent.
where else have we seen glory on a mountain?
Exodus 33:18-23
In that we see moses comes down from seeing just the backside of God and his face is shining such that, the people told him to cover his face, the glory of God was so radiating off him.
But here its different. mark doesn't say just that Jesus’s face shone, but his garments, It interesting to see in the bible we see garments used as symbolisum of the inward conditon of the heart and of holyness we see this in
3 Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments. 4 And the angel said to those who were standing before him, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.”
But Jesus’s garments are white, so white it as iff he is wearing light, so white that no man could make white.
This speaks to jesus righteousness and holyness, he is the unbelished lamb of God, he is holy he is without sin, and only God is without sin. this a wonderful physical manifistaion of jesus’s holiness
this is what paul ment when he said
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
Why are Moses and Elijah there?
Why are Moses and Elijah there?
they repesent the fufilment of the law and the phropets, the great law giver and one of the greatest prophets, who called out to a lost generation, both of these men tried and ultimenlty failed to redeeem Gods people, here we see jesus’s and his work will do what these men couldnt and were never ment to do, they point to him.
as isaiah wrote
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
peter writing later echos this
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,
this is it ladies and gentelmen the kingdom of God has come in power, jesus’s glory is being put on display and his role as the fufilment of the law and prophets is being made evident
What are the disciples doing while all this is going on?
What are the disciples doing while all this is going on?
so what are the dicples doing as this dislpy of glory and fufillment is happening
Mark doesn't tell us but if we look at the other gosples we see
32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.
THEY WERE ASLEEP!!!!!!!
Are you kidding me!!!!
Why though? well remember back they have had there hopes dashed, and they have been told that they are going to suffer and that jesus is going to be killed.
sleeping becasue they we sad,
And they were missing the very thing jesus was giving them to prepare them for that suffering,
but when they final wake up to this awsome display of glory what happens \

5 And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified.
Peter was trying to make this last, trying to make them stay, he saw jesus glorifed in this present moment and he was terrifed, one becasue the unvieled face of god was bing shown to him and he knew the oldtestent, that no man can see the face of God and live. but he was also afriad that they would leave this mountain and the glory of jesus would leave to. See peter still didnt full understand
7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.
9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” 12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”
I love how God steps in and shuts up peter before he can put his foot in his mouth again, God doesn't leave room for misunderstanding, he tells them this is my son, Listen to him. Stop trying to insert your plans and ideas about who or how, listen to him. stop. and listen so you dont miss the glory.
He and the disciples miss the point, there are excited again, because there thinking “wow, this is better than we thought. Our messiah is God, he will surly defeat the romans and bring peace.” They were still seeing the gosple as a earthly deliverance not the spiritual deliverance to life from death.
This is why jesus didn't want them to share what they had seen, because they didn't understand why jesus had come. they kept thinking on an earthly level, If they had told others they would have tried to make jesus king by force that is if they even believed the dicisples.
No suffering no glory
No suffering no glory
This an important application for us ladied and gentelmen, we must remeber that jeuss is just as gloruied, just as much God in ths valleys as on the mountian tops
As pastor Jason wrote in his sermon on this passage
There is a ordinary glory to Jesus
“He is just as
glorious clothed in
blood as he is clothed
in light.”
what what peter didnt understand was that in his humliation jesus was winning for himself and us eternal glory and rewards,
as paul wrote in phillipans
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
if christ had not willingly humbled himself there would be no cross and without a cross there would be no salvation. And more importantly we would not be able to prasie jesus for his role as our redeemer, It was in his death that he was even more highly exalted.
Peter wanted the glory without the suffering. But jesus is showing us that it is by our suffering that we recive the glory found in christ. It is in suffering wwe see the glory of God. You cant get to the top of the mountian without the climb.
So how can we apply this story to us?
There will be times in our lives when we are called to suffer, called to die to ourselves, called to take up our cross. that is our live as christens.
The gosple is a call to come and die, and in this modern day age we have continualy found was to run from to aovid it. especially in this disnyland called america. we no longer see suffering as anessary part of the christain life. But it is.
God had one sin without sin, but no son without a cross
jesus said anyone!!! anyone who comes after me must take up his cross. We are called to suffer it is a requiremnt of the christan faith.
But when we are called to suffer we dispare we fiant under the presser and we sleep, we seek comforts, we rebuke the voices of God in our lives. and we run. but we must not run ladies and gentelmen.
In the face of those sturggles insted of running we look to the hill, we see chrsit on the htrown, dressed in rodes, king and conquer who has overcome all things and we trust his provison and let go of our plans our purposes.
You cant hold on to christ in the storms if you are holding on to earthly desires, suffering purifies us, it reminds us to look back to christ. belibves we have been spared suffering in this nation but there are around the world thosands of men woman and children who daily face the real threat of death, prison, chains and beating becasue of there faith. And what sustains them is this image, of jesus glorifed and seated on the thrown, the fufillment of the law and the prophets.
but this wount be as glorius to you ladies and gentelmen if you are comfotable, if you dont have a battle. You miss out on the beatiful all satifying gift of his glory becasue you refuse to suffer. you give up the promise of a futer kingdom of current comforts. Do not expect to see Gods glory if you refuse to step onto the battle feild. The disciples did and they paid a high price, but it was worth it, it was a small price to pay in comparison to the all satifying gift of knowing and seeing the glory of God in christ jesus.
So to you suffering Christain, take courage and look to the mountains, to heaven where our savior is seated on the thrown. he has won, he has overcome and we have freedom and refife from all sufferings.
But to you who have been lazy, running from suffering from trials from responisblity. Know that you will not see this power of God in your lives until you step onto the front lines, till you give up your messiah, your false savoir that you have set up over your life. find those things that you have put your faith in and have made you bind to the glory of God in your life and dethrone them. if it is faith in a relationship, put God in the center, if thats not possible then get rid of it. if its a career, let go of your faith in it. all thses hold us back and make us afaid to suffer and so keep us from the mountian where his glory shines.
live life on the battle feild so that you may live in the presence of the power and glory of God.
jim elliot i dont know if you all know him but he was a missionary
Jim elliot lived like this and though he died his life ring out with victory and he sits now wrapped in the glory of his redeemer and he sings with angles HOLY HOLY HOLY and the heavens shake as throne room shakes with the prasies of the saints whos lives we not wasted in comfots but spent in pursut of the glory of God.
“A million angles fall face down on the floor, all to echo holy is the lord,My heart can help but sing with all of heaven roar, all to echo holy is the Lord.”
I want my life to sing this song, i want my soul to sing it, i want to see his glory. "
