Christ is no sooner out of the waters of baptism than he is in the fires of temptation; whence we learn that great manifestations of the love of God are usually followed with great temptations from Satan.
Francis Crawford Burkitt (Patristic Scholar)
No one is so good that he is immune from temptation. We will never be entirely free from it.… There is no order so holy, no place so secret where there will be no temptation.
Thomas à Kempis (Ascetical Writer)
"Christ willed to be tempted, first for our instruction, secondly for our encouragement, and thirdly for our deliverance."
"Christ's temptation was not merely an exhibition, but a real trial, through which He learned obedience and taught us to overcome by the same Spirit."
C.S. Lewis "Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. ... Christ, because He was the only man who never yielded to temptation, is also the only man who knows to the full what temptation means."
Oswald Chambers
"Temptation is not sin; it is the call to battle, and there is no sin in God's call to arms. Jesus Christ was tempted in all points as we are, yet without sin—because He never gave in."
If you would master temptation, you must first let Christ master you.

Temptations … put nothing into a man, but only draw out what was in him before.
John Owen (Puritan Divine and Statesman)
Temptation is like a knife, that may either cut the meat or the throat of a man; it may be his food or poison.
John Owen (Puritan Divine and Statesman)
Temptation provokes me to look upward to God.
John Bunyan
God tested Abraham. Temptation is not meant to make us fail; it is meant to confront us with a situation out of which we emerge stronger than we were. Temptation is not the penalty of manhood; it is the glory of manhood.
William Barclay (New Testament Scholar)
We usually know what we can do, but temptation shows us who we are.
Thomas à Kempis (Ascetical Writer)
As Satan can tell how to suit temptations for you in the day of your want, so he has those that can entangle you in the day of your fullness.
John Bunyan
It takes two to make a successful temptation, and you are one of the two.
Anonymous
