Sin, both personal and generational produces misery. We cannot sustain ourselves.
God starts this chapter with a declaration of comfort. Comfort my people. Speak to my people as a father to his child when the child is in distress.
The trial that the people of God are facing is because of their sin, but God will not see them utterly destroyed, He will pardon their sins and renew their strength, he will faithfully guide them as a shepherd, he is their living hope.
What is my hope in life and death?
Misplaced Hope. Man attempts to fix his misery through idolatry and works.
God is not like us. The uniquely wondrous, powerful, good and wise nature of God.
Why don’t we trust in God? Our nature is contrary to God’s nature. We have hearts that are sick and in rebellion against our creator. We long for the things and the comforts of the world, but these things are cheap immitations and cannot sustain or heal our misery. At best sin dulls the heart for a moment and increases our misery in the next.
How God comforts us in our misery…
