See dead people
Ending you realize he was dead. If you ever watch it again after knowing he is dead you cannot miss all of the clues throughout the movie showing.
In a similar way, we see a story today about two men who know their Bibles well but have failed to realize the end of the story. Not in some clever disguise with a twist like a movie plot, but having Christ revealed clearly to them in the scriptures. Once you are shown the reality that all of the Bible is about Jesus, you cannot help but see him as you read.

Context

Luke 24:15–16 “While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.”
Divine Concealment
“KEPT”
Doesn’t say “they didn’t recognize him”
Shows God’s sovereignty & power even over our senses
We have full, free, final total autonomy
That means we are sovereign and not God
Nothing will thwart his plan
Other places Jesus isn’t recognized
Mary Magdalene outside the tomb - Jn 20:11-18
Looking sad - STRESS
Luke 24:18 “Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?””
Everyone knew
Walking in NY on September 13 2001 asking what things?
An event so monumental it literately split time
Luke 24:19–21 “And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.”
Jesus!
He was this prophet of God

Maybe these guys were there
Luke 19:28–38 “And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ” So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying,…”
Enters on a donkey fulfilling prophecy by Zech
Laying down coats & palm branches
Hosanna - “save we pray”
“We hope he is the the one to redeem israel”
But then Jesus dies…
Women find empty tomb
“we had hoped the was the one to redeem israel”
Looking sad
Is it not the same problem we find ourselves in?
Where is my hope?
What is my purpose?
Where is my redeemer
Oh foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe…
Foolish being perception, slow of heart being acceptance
You can intellectually understand something but not embrace it
Intelligence & faith
Believe what?
Eye witness testimony?
Angelic revelation?
Physical confirmation?
Luke 24:25 “And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!”
All the Prophets have spoken…
Cherry picked the verses they liked about victory and kingdom
All of the scriptures OT
Luke 24:27 “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.”
Luke 24:44–45 “Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,”
Not new material, Jesus has said this before
John 5:36–40 “But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.”
Jesus teaches them the Bible
“Let me tell you about this Jesus and how the entire Bible is about him”
Jesus as the better Adam
Jesus as the serpent crusher in Gen 3
Jesus as the Noah’s ark to pass safely through Gods wrath
Jesus as the temple when he said John 2:19 “Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.””
Jesus as the better Isaac, the son who is sacrificed
The manna that fell from heaven, how they ate it and died but I am the bread of life
Jesus as the rock that was struck for the people to drink
Jesus as the passover lamb who’s blood is applied to our account
Jesus as the two goats to atone for our sins and take our guilt away
Jesus as the bronze serpent to be lifted up on a pole so that all who look will live
Jesus as the suffering servant in Isaiah who
Isaiah 53:1–12
had no form or majesty or beauty (carpenters son)
he was despised and rejected
he was pierced for our transgressions
crushed for our iniquities
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace
by his wounds we are healed
and by his righteous should many be made righteous
There will be a portion divided among them. A victorious inheritance awaiting them
Jesus as the truer Jonah who did not go into the belly of a fish for 3 days but rather into the heart of the earth for 3 days
They begin to see it
Although they we’re still blinded to the physical Jesus their eyes were opened to gaze upon the Biblical Jesus
“So Psalm 22 is about Jesus”
My God My God why have you forsaken me
Psalm 22:14–18 “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet— I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.”
They thought that Jesus had failed to be the redeemer because they failed to see the scriptures rightly.
The reality is he is the one to redeemer
Galatians 3:13 “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—”
Duet 21:23
Titus 2:13–14 “waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.”
Luke 24:28–29 “So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them.”
“urged him strongly”
Strongly - forcefully, contraint
They didn’t want him to leave
Luke 24:30–32 “When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us…
STOP
Pretend you don’t know what happens next..
Burn when?
When he broke the bread and they’re eyes were opened?
When they realized he was Jesus?
When he vanished in front of them?
“while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?””

Yet one continual thread of redemption throughout
Read the Bible (Rightly)
Wrong views of the bible are:
A roadmap for your life
A checklist for success
A moral standard
History lesson
Good story
The right view of the Bible is to see the thread of redemption all the way through it
“Don’t you know, young man, that from every town and every village and every hamlet in England, wherever it may be, there is a road to London? So from every text of Scripture there is a road to Christ. And my dear brother, your business is, when you get to a text, to say, now, what is the road to Christ? I have never found a text that had not got a road to Christ in it, and if ever I do find one, I will go over hedge and ditch but I would get at my Master, for the sermon cannot do any good unless there is a savor of Christ in it.” - CH Spurgeon

See Jesus Rightly
The travelers brought their own agenda to their Bible and to Jesus
Would the Jesus of the Bible be recognizable to us?
Trump?
The Jesus who affirms everything
The Jesus who looks like us
Respond Rightly in Worship
We do this not simply to gain knowledge. but ultimately, right reading of the scriptures ought to produce worship
Hearts burn within us
1 Corinthians 13:12 “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.”
Church we too are surrounded by Christ and although we cannot see him physically we can see him scripturally. But one day our dinner reservation will come and we will be ushered to a table where we will sit down and see him face to face.
May our hearts burn until that end
