Open to Acts 1
In todays lesson we are going to see now one of the first things that the disciples do as they await for the Holy Spirit
So today I want us to over look this section of scripture and see the calling of Matthias
Pray
1: The Return (vs 12-14)
Read vs 12-14
We find here that the disciples do as they are told and return to Jerusalem just as Jesus had instructed them to do.
Enduring word Commentary states:
“This was notable obedience. Jesus told them to return to Jerusalem and wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4), and that is exactly what they did. They didn’t forget the sermon right after they heard it, and they actually did what Jesus told them to do, even though He was no longer physically present with them”.
We find that this journey was a days journey Or as scripture refers a sabbaths day journey because on the sabbath you were only allowed somewhere which was a day’s journey so the mount of olives is actually right outside of Jerusalem and was only a days journey so they were good.
Now we come to a phrasing that is quite interesting we see the Bible state
When they were come in they went up into an upper room:
And not only did the eleven go in but also others as well
According to enduring word commentary
Acts 1:15 tells us that there were about 120 present. This included the eleven disciples (the twelve minus Judas); along with Mary, the mother of Jesus, the brothers of Jesus (such as James and Jude), the women who followed Jesus, and others.
i. The brothers of Jesus never seemed to be supportive of His ministry before His death and resurrection (John 7:5, Mark 3:21). After encountering the resurrected Jesus, they were changed into true followers of Jesus.
ii. translates with the women as with their wives, a reference to the wives of the apostles.
So we find them return and now they go into this upper room and what do they do?
They in one accord pray together earnestly for the coming promise of the Lord
So we find in obedience these men and women do as jesus had told them to do and now we are going to see something they do while they wait
2: The Suggestion (VS 15-20)
Read Verse 15-20
Now Peter stands up and now suggess that they must find a replacement for Judas
And now peter tells them that Judas’ death was a part of God’s perfect plan
Look back at verse 16
Peter here says basically hey Judas didnt thwart the plan of God he fulfilled it.
Peter will now quote from two separate psalms to show this to them that were present
We see this in 17-20
So now we see that Peter in verse 20 suggests that a new apostle needs to be appointed and here in a moment we are going to see the requirements of this role and we will see who is chosen
3: The Selection (VS 21-26)
Reread
first we see that The disciples were bold enough to make a decision because they knew from God’s Word that this is what He wanted. The apostles did not sense an outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon them; that was yet to come. But God did not leave them without guidance. They knew what to do from the Word.
now We see the classifications of what it means to be an apostle or the things which must have happend in order to have this office:
Whoever replaced Judas must be one who had been with them since John baptized them, who stayed with them during the days of Jesus’ earthly ministry, and who saw the resurrected Jesus.
These classifications were not clearly defined anywhere in scripture but are known as a sanctified common since
Meaning these classifications they use here are not requirements that are recorded in scripture
But they used good logical common since in order to elect Judas’s replacement
and now one Job that this elected person would have to do now is be a witness of the ressurection
this was the main job of the disciple that would replace Judas. Now that Jesus had ascended to heaven, it was more important than ever to have a witness…of His resurrection.
So for these people out here who go around claiming to be apostles of Jesus are completely wrong because to be an apostle you had to have been a witness of Jesus’ ressurection
so now with these classifications they narrow it down to two names that being Jospeh called barsabas who was surnamed Justus and Matthias
After they call these names they all again in one accord go to the Lord in prayer
and those there gave lots and the lots given was to matthias
So now we have seen judas’ replacement being called next week when we get into chapter 2 we are going to see pentecost and now what takes place there
Pray
