A lot of times with sin it doesn’t happen in isolation but there’s a complexity and there’s an attachment and there’s a strong sense of.
The last two of the three symbolic descents happened in chapter 32 The first one was the lowing of Joseph in the wilderness pit or cistern, second his forced descent into Egypt as a slave, and thirdly his descent into prison by Potiphar.
Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there.
The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
Potiphar witness first hand how God has blessed Joseph. It was something very evident. vs 3
And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand.
He saw that The Lord was with him. and the Lord made all he did to prosper.
So Joseph presence meant blessing to Potiphar. Just like Jacobs presence was a blessing to Laban.
Sometimes there is a blessing by association and proximity.
For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.
Same thing with us we are blessed by our association to Christ.
So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority.
So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had in the house and in the field.
Thus he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.
Potiphar trusted David so much that he never demanded accounting.
He didn’t have to hire an auditor to go over the books.
He believed in the integrity of Jospeh.
Jospeh freed Potiphar up to be concerned about his job which was to be an officer of Pharoah.
A good employee always makes there boss job easier.
And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.”
Potiphar let Joseph run his whole home. So Jospeh was busy but so was Potiphars wife. She was busy scheming on the young handsome Joseph.
It maybe that Potiphar was older and his wife was attracted to him anymore.
Or he was so preoccupied with work he didn’t have to or give her the attention she needed. Regardless of the fact.
She was a lustful lady. Or sought a younger man. She thought Jospeh was a snack.
vs 7 cast longing eyes on Joseph - means that she looked lustfully at Joseph. She had sexual desires for Joseph.
But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand.
There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
Jospeh decided God over sensuality. Joseph was in a place where this kind of wickedness was normal in Egypt where they had just as many idols and the Babylonians.
But Joseph maintained a testimony for the living and true God and a high moral standard.
Joseph witnessed the grace of God through all Gods blessings. And He responded properly which is honor.
Joseph had a high view on marriage. “My master has turned over everything to me by you, you are his wife.”
God has given marriage to all mankind. When you begin to despise marriage you begin to despise God.
A man that would break his marriage vows will generally break any vow he has made to God.
vs 9 is a great wickedness and sin because Potiphar has intrusted all that he had with Jospeh. Do you know its a blessing when someone let you in there home and in there space. Everyone doesn’t deserve that right for that to happen. its exploiting the blessings of God and utilizing it for evil.
So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.
This was continual sin. She tried to initiate to him day by day.
Potiphar was probably away to much. She tempted Jospeh again and again and Again.
After she tempts him again and again. in her starts to build up resentment against Joseph.
My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent.
But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside,
that she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.
And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,
that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.
Things weren’t so well between Potiphar and his wife. Notice how she speaks of him in such a mean, degrading way. She says that he brought in a Hebrew to mock them
Maybe the wife has been guilty of this before that why she said Jospeh was brought there to “mock us.”
Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.
When one is faced with sexual immorality one should run as Joseph.
Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
You have three characters here.
Is Joseph who recieved the grace of God witnessed His mercy first hand and honored God with His life.
To Potiphar one who appreiates the benefits of God. Likes the relationship of God but God isn’t practical and personal to Him. its just blessing by association. I’m around spiritual people so there for I am.
Then you had Potiphars wife. Hurt by life, seems like she was neglected by her husband. But instead of taking that pain to God like Hanna. She decided to act out with a lustful spirit.
