Proverbs 3:1-12 / 1 Corinthians 3:18-23
Prayer is an admission that you need God. The converse of this is also true; when we do not pray we are admitting we do not need God. Prayer is a powerful way that we can acknowledge God in all our ways. While common prayer is not “foolish” in the eyes of the world, the prayer we are called to is indeed foolish. For we are called to pray in Christ’s name, and for the Kingdom of Christ to come on earth as it is in Heaven. Now, in the eyes of the world, this is foolish.
Many of us struggle with prayer, because prayer is not natural for us. It is a spiritual task and being such it goes against our flesh. Thus, to lean on the wisdom of God, and not our own wisdom we must seek to have more of the Spirit of God so that our flesh will diminish (Romans 8). If prayer is an admission that we need God we see in these scriptures our call to a desperation and dependence upon Him.
Although, our prayer life has a way of telling on us. How much do you really need Him? Well the answer comes through considering how much you pray and what those prayers look like. Is your prayer frequent or inconsistent? Are they aimed at the depth of the love of Christ or the surface level feelings? Is it short or without ceasing? The Spirit of God will and can work in us to grow us in this area. It is true that the Christian does not have power in himself personally, but has all of the power, weaponry, and love of Heaven available to Him in prayer through his union with Christ. The more we lean on Him, the less we quench Him. The more we acknowledge Him, the walls of personal pride will diminish. And as we call on His name, things are bound and loosed in Heaven and on Earth (Matthew 16:19). To not pray is to live independent of the Lord Jesus. Which as Paul says, is the way the world lives.
May it not be so with us! May the desire of our heart be to constantly say unto Christ, “Lord, I need thee every hour”, and take every opportunity to lift up our heart before the Lord.
