Christ Died For You

Intro; One of the greatest things about “God So Loved” is that his love is more than just words He speaks, it is the action that He takes that makes His love real!
17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
Love without action is just like a dead faith!
What would you think about a person who said they loved you more than anything in this world and they want to spend the rest of their life with you, and then they go and marry someone else? That’s a pretty shallow love!
If God said “He loves us”, but never did anything to prove that love that we could believe Him, his words would carry no more weight than the one who said he loved one and married another.
But thank God he does not operate like humans do. God backs up His words with action!
I want us to look tonight at “Christ Died for You!”
Text; Rom. 5:6-11
6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.
10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
Prayer
1. The Condition of Man;
1. The Condition of Man;
There are four words found in these five verses that describe the condition of man without Christ; without strength, ungodly, sinners and enemies.
Without Strength- powerless, helpless, worthless, unable to change our circumstances. We are powerless to escape sin, to escape death, to resist the devil, to please God in any way.
10 As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one;
Ungodly- not like God, profane, without reverence for God. It literally means to “live your life as if God did not exist.”
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;
29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers,
30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful;
32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.
Sinners- missing the mark, falling short of God’s standard. No matter how good man tries to be, he can never be good enough. Though he may aim high, and set high standards, still he always falls short of God’s standard. Man always misses the mark. To be almost right is to be always wrong!
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Enemies- an adversary, at war. Whether we want to believe this or not, a lost person is in the camp of Satan, an enemy of God. No matter how much a man may talk of loving the Lord or being a good person, if that man is unsaved, he is a liar! God says the lost are His enemies.
4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
People apart from Jesus are a hopeless situation!
2. The Compassion of Christ; 6-8
2. The Compassion of Christ; 6-8
The compassion of Christ for the sinner exceeds anything beyond the thought of man.
[v.7] We just celebrated Memorial Day and in doing so we thank the Lord for those men and women who served/serve in the military to give us the freedom we have today. Those people don’t even know us yet they fought for us. That is an admirable thing.
On June 29, 1983 in Monroe La. there was a group of people at Critters Creek Amusement Park who were swimming in a pond. There were three kids that begin to holler for help as they were drowning. A young man of 24 dove in to rescue the three kids. Two of the boys were rescued but the third boy and his rescuer drowned. The young man who dove in to rescue the kids was Joe Delaney, All Pro running back for the Kansas City Chiefs, a friend and graduate of Haughton High School. The astounding thing about this rescue attempt was that Joe didn’t know how to swim!
President Ronald Reagan honored Delaney with the Presidential Citizens Medal on July 15, and it was presented to Delaney's family by Vice President George H. W. Bush. Reagan's words were:
He made the ultimate sacrifice by placing the lives of three children above regard for his own safety. By the supreme example of courage and compassion, this brilliantly gifted young man left a spiritual legacy for his fellow Americans.
All that these people did that was amazing and extraordinary for folks they didn’t know, and I do not want to minimize/belittle what they did, but it still doesn’t compare to what Christ has done for us!
[v.8] Jesus did for sinners! You see, while we were without strength, ungodly, sinners and enemies, Jesus died for us! He did not die for His friends. He died for His enemies! He did not die for people who loved Him, but He died for the very people who had crucified Him. He died for the ungodly!
Demonstrates- present tense/continually shows His love towards us. Christ love for us cost Him his life so His enemies could live!
Christ died as our sacrifice;
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
Christ died as our ransom; bought back
20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
Christ died as our substitute; took our place
13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”),
9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
The greatness of God’s love is not only found in the high cost of it, but also in how unworthy are the recipients of it!
3. Complete In Chist; 9-11
3. Complete In Chist; 9-11
Because of God’s great gift in Christ, man’s condition has changed for those who have come to Him by faith! Those who were once without strength, ungodly, sinners and enemies can now be justified, saved from wrath, reconciled, saved by His life!
Justified- not guilty, found righteous in Christ
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Saved from Wrath- free from the penalty of sin through the blood
9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.
9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Reconciled- to make enemies friends, no longer in opposition to God
10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
Saved by His Life- intercessor, mediator
34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
[v.11] Knowing who we were and what God has done for us in Christ, and if you have been saved, you should rejoice!
Close;
God sent Jesus to die for us, not because we were good, but because He loves us. If God loved us when we were rebels, surely we can praise and honor Him as his children. God’s love is based on more than just His word, but also in His actions.
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
