INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Henderson writes, “Through the interpretation of tongues, the mysteries we speak can be made known and shared.”
Henderson writes, “Tongues by themselves can bring great blessing to us as individuals. When they are coupled with interpretation, however, great blessing and empowerment can come to the Church, the Body of Christ, as well as to us individually.”
INTERPRETATION IS NOT TRANSLATION
INTERPRETATION IS NOT TRANSLATION
What is the main difference between interpretation and translation?
Translation is a word-for-word restating of the original in another language. Interpretation is not necessarily word-for-word. It gives the main idea of the original.
What is one of the main benefits of interpretation?
It allows the hearer to understand what the Holy Spirit is saying and provides encouragement and empowerment.
TONGUES SPEAK TO GOD
TONGUES SPEAK TO GOD
Henderson argues that tongues and interpretation are not God speaking to us, but us speaking to God. Do you agree with this statement?
I do not agree fully with this statement. There is an component of tongues that is us speaking to God, but I believe that tongues and interpretation in a corporate setting are most clearly understood as God speaking to the congregation through these gifts.
What implications might this have for messages of rebuke to the church as one example?
I would not want the message of rebuke to the church to be us speaking to God. This is example is clearly God speaking to us.
VARIETIES OF TONGUES
VARIETIES OF TONGUES
Read 1 Corinthians 12:28. What might this say about the role of tongues in the church today in relation to other gifts or callings?
God has appointed leaders in the church. In the same context, Paul discusses the role of tongues. It would seem that God never intended tongues to cease no more than He intended pastors to cease.
What might a change in the tone or dialect of tongues mean?
It could represent a difference in the intent of the tongues. Is it rebuke or exaltation? It could also represent a change in season or assignment in a person’s life.
