Intro:
We have finished our study through Nehemiah and before jumping right into our next study through an entire book, I wanted to take a few weeks and change up the format a little bit.
And during this transitional period, between book studies, I felt that it would be good for us to get to know the God that we serve, a little better.
I have been reading some of the writings of A.W. Tozer and some of his comments have been the prod that God has used to encourage me to speak on the topic of… The Attributes of God.
Tozer said “Christianity at any given time is strong or weak depending upon her concept of God. And I insist upon this and I have said it many times, that the basic trouble with the Church today is her unworthy conception of God.”
And then, in another writing, he said “It is vitally important that we think soundly about God. Since He is the foundation of all our religious beliefs, it follows that if we err in our ideas of God, we will go astray on everything else.”
And then, in talking about our worship of God, he says “Worship, I say, rises or falls with our concept of God; that is why I do not believe in these half-converted cowboys who call God “the Man Upstairs.” I do not think they worship at all because their concept of God is unworthy of God and unworthy of them. And if there is one terrible disease in the Church of Christ, it is that we do not see God as great as He is.”
Its that last phrase that gets me… “... if there is one terrible disease in the Church of Christ, it is that we do not see God as great as He is”…
This hits me because if we do not see God as great as He is, then everything else begins to shrink Him down to our size. Our worship becomes routine. Our prayers become hesitant. Our obedience becomes selective. And our faith? Our faith gets fragile—because it’s no longer anchored in the majesty and might of a God who can’t be contained.
When our vision of God is small, our lives follow suit. But when our eyes are opened to see Him as He truly is—holy, sovereign, infinite, powerful, merciful… … it changes everything.
So today, we will start looking at the Attributes of God… We won’t get through all of them before we start our next book study. But, we will look at a few in the coming weeks and then we will come back to this topic periodically when the Lord leads to do so.
As we start our study of God’s Attributes, it is only fitting to start with the one that is listed up on the screen… Infinitude… … Now there’s a word you don’t hear everyday!
We talk about the fact that God is Infinite, but do we really understand what that means??
“Well Pastor… that means that God has no beginning and no end, He’s infinite, He’s just… there…”
Yes, that is one area in which He is infinite… but that doesn’t even scratch the surface of His Infinitude…
We have to start with this attribute because it is the tree that all of His other attributes branch off from…
(Picture of Tree)
All of God’s attributes—His love, His justice, His mercy, His wisdom, His holiness—find their fullest meaning in this one foundational truth: God is infinite.
He is without limit, without boundary, without measure. And because He is infinite, all of His other attributes are infinite and without restriction as well… we need to keep that in mind as we consider The Attributes of God.
As I said before… this is going to be a different format. We will open with a passage of Scripture to get our minds thinking in the direction that we are going to go, but we will be looking at several Scriptures throughout our study today.…
That being said… please open your Bibles to…
Romans 11 (Read vv. 33-36)
Meat:
The apostle Paul ends this chapter of Romans with a spontaneous eruption of praise—not because he figured God out, but because he was overwhelmed by God's infinite greatness.
Today, we’re going to explore three ways God is infinite—and how that truth should transform the way we live, the way we worship, and the way we trust Him.
God is Infinite in...
1. His Being
1. His Being
Moses knew God was infinite… This is evident as he prays in…
1 Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.
2 Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
Moses knew that God…
1.1 Has Always Existed
1.1 Has Always Existed
Before the world was formed, before time began… Unlike everything in creation, God was not caused, not born, not made. He simply is… He always has been and always will be.
When God called Moses to lead the Nation of Israel out of Egypt, Moses started playing 20 questions… we find one of those questions in…
13 Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”
and here id God’s answer…
14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
I have to tell you that those two small words—“I AM”—are infinitely deep. They are not just a name; they are a declaration of God's very nature… When God says, “I AM WHO I AM,” He is saying, “I exist by My Own power. I don’t depend on anyone or anything.
And this is the part that we cannot wrap our minds around because… Every created thing has a beginning. Every person, every planet, every molecule owes its existence to something else… We are caused. We are contingent. We are dependent.
But not God… God has no origin. He didn’t come from anywhere because He has always been… He doesn’t grow, improve, or age… He doesn’t change… He doesn’t rely on anyone to supply Him with strength, knowledge, or life… He is self-existent… He is the source of everything… and yet dependent on nothing.
And here’s what’s truly amazing… … the great “I AM” is the One who speaks to us. The One who called Moses, who stepped into history, who came to earth in the form of a man - Jesus Christ… He is the One who gave His life so we could spend eternity with Him… … The infinite, uncreated, all-sufficient God doesn’t need us—yet He chooses to love us.
Moses goes on to say in…
4 For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it is past, And like a watch in the night.
God’s Being is…
1.2 Not Constrained by Time
1.2 Not Constrained by Time
Moses reflects here on how radically different God's perception of time is compared to ours. What seems long, slow, or significant to us—centuries of history, the span of a lifetime—is like a blink of an eye to the infinite God. To Him, a millennium is like a moment…
Time defines so much of our existence. We wake up to alarms, rush to appointments, and count down days and years.
We measure life in moments—birthdays, graduations, funerals… We're bound by clocks and calendars… We feel the pressure of time running out or the weight of time dragging on (some of you think you are feeling that weight right now… is this guy ever going to stop talking?)…
But God is not like us. He is Infinite—not just endless in duration, but entirely outside the limits of time itself… To us, time feels like a race we’re always trying to keep up with…
But to God, past, present, and future are equally and fully known… He sees the beginning and the end in one eternal moment… He doesn’t react—He orchestrates. He doesn’t have to predict—because He already knows.
And I know this hard to understand and wrap your minds around, because I’ll admit, my finite mind cannot fully comprehend it either…
But here is what I can say with certainty…
Because God is not constrained by Time…
He’s never caught off guard by your situation.
He’s never scrambling to find a solution.
He’s already in your tomorrow just as fully as He is in your today.
and He holds your past with grace, your present with purpose, and your future with perfect clarity.
So while we’re stressed by waiting or anxious about what's ahead, God is inviting us to trust Him. Because the One who holds time in His hands is not panicked… He is patient, purposeful, and perfectly in control.
The fact that He is not constrained by time leads to the second point on your outline…
God is Infinite in…
2. His Knowledge
2. His Knowledge
Listen to the words of another Psalmist…
5 Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.
When we talk about God’s infinite knowledge, we can break it down into two categories… the first of which is…
2.1 External Events
2.1 External Events
God’s knowledge encompasses all things in creation, all events in history, and all possibilities in the future. Nothing happens in the universe that He does not fully and perfectly know.
God says this in…
9 “Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’;
He knows every detail of world history: every king who rose to power, every war fought, every treaty signed, every disaster endured, and every decision made by every human being.
Just think about the last 100 years:
In 1945, when the world was reeling from the devastation of World War II and atomic bombs fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, God wasn’t confused or uncertain. He saw the suffering, He knew the decisions that led there, and He already saw the rebuilding that would follow.
During the Cold War, when the world feared nuclear annihilation and superpowers stood on the brink, God was not anxious. He understood every political move, every secret conversation, every intention of every heart.
On September 11, 2001, when the Twin Towers fell and the world stood still in horror, God knew the pain of every victim, the bravery of every rescuer, and the ripple effects that would shape global politics and personal lives for decades to come.
In the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world shut down, economies shook, and millions grieved, God wasn’t taken off guard. He knew every viral mutation, every hospital bed, every policy shift, every lonely cry.
Even in recent conflicts like the war in Ukraine and the war in Israel… God knows the future outcomes that we cannot yet imagine.
He also knows the path of your life—where you’ve been, where you are, and where you’re going… God knows it ALL…
And to take it even further… He also knows the…
2.2 Internal Events
2.2 Internal Events
When God sent Samuel to the house of Jesse to anoint a new King that would replace Saul, Samuel took one look at Eliab and said “This has got to be the one”… On the outside, Eliab must have been exactly what Samuel thought he would be looking for in a new King…
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
The writer of Hebrews says it this way…
13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
God’s infinite knowledge doesn’t stop at the surface. He sees into the inner world of our hearts—our emotions, our motives, our thoughts, our struggles… and He sees them better than we see them ourselves.
God’s infinite knowledge means we can trust Him.
Even when life feels uncertain, chaotic, or completely out of control—God is not confused. He is not scrambling to keep up. He is not surprised by what you’re facing today. He knows. Every detail.
We often feel the weight of not knowing—What’s going to happen next? Why did this happen? Where is this all going? That uncertainty creates anxiety. It shakes our confidence. But that’s exactly where the character of God steps in to anchor us. His infinite knowledge gives us a reason to rest.
He knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10).
He knows every thought before it’s formed (Psalm 139:2).
He knows what you need before you ask (Matthew 6:8).
He knows every tear you’ve cried (Psalm 56:8).
He knows your past, your present, and every possibility your future holds.
And because He knows every detail, even the ones you don’t see yet, you don’t have to panic… You don’t have to figure everything out. You don’t have to carry the burden of controlling the outcome. Your job isn’t to understand everything… … it’s just to trust the One who does.
Gotta keep moving…
God is infinite in…
3. His Power
3. His Power
Jeremiah says…
17 ‘Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.
Jeremiah utters these words while he is in the midst of a national crisis and while dealing with his own personal uncertainty… and yet he focuses, not on the problems before him, but on the infinite power of God.
God displays His infinite power…
3.1 As Creator
3.1 As Creator
We don’t have time to go through the creation account, but everything that was created, with the exception of Mankind, was created just from God’s voice.
Now… I have a pretty strong voice… My voice has the power to make people jump, if they don’t know I am there and happen to loudly make my presence known…
My voice has the power to keep my dog from leaving the yard if she decides to chase a squirrel or a rabbit…
My voice has the power to quiet a bus full of kids… and some people would see that as an amazing feat…
But that is absolutely nothing compared to the power that is found in just the voice of God.
David said in…
6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.
He spoke—and galaxies came into existence.
He breathed—and stars took their places in the sky.
Think about that. Everything we see—from the smallest atom to the largest supernova—was created without tools, effort, or delay. Just His voice. Just His breath… Just His will.
Think about this…
The sun burns at 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit on its surface, releasing more energy in one second than humanity has used in all of history. God spoke, and the sun began to blaze.
Our Milky Way galaxy is 100,000 light-years wide—and it’s just one of billions of galaxies. God knows each one. He formed every star and placed it precisely in its place… using nothing but His voice…
And His power isn’t limited to just creation… we also see His power…
3.2 As Sustainer
3.2 As Sustainer
To quote the writer of Hebrews again… speaking of Christ, he says…
3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power…
God's power didn’t stop after creation—it is continually at work sustaining all things… The laws of physics, the orbit of the planets, the growth of cells—everything continues because God, in His infinite power, keeps it going…
The Apostle Paul, when writing to the Corinthian Church, mentioned that he had some sort of thorn in the flesh. We don’t know exactly what it was, some speculate it was his dwindling eye sight… whatever it was, he pleaded with God to take it away from him…
This weakness, this struggle, this inconvenience, this uncertain ailment… please Lord, just take it away!…
9 And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Listen church family… your weakness is not an obstacle—it’s an opportunity for God’s infinite strength to be displayed, as He sustains us through this wild adventure of life…
Closing:
As I stated at the beginning, every single one of God’s attributes branches of from His infinitude… His love is infinite, His goodness is infinite, His grace, His mercy… They are all infinite, they will never run out…
That means you can’t exhaust His patience.
You can’t outrun His forgiveness.
You can’t reach the bottom of His grace or find the edge of His love.
No matter how many times you’ve failed, no matter how deep the sin, no matter how heavy the burden—there is still more mercy. There is still more grace. There is still more strength. Because God is not limited like we are.
We reach our limits. We run out of compassion. We grow tired, bitter, impatient… But He never does.
And this is not just theology—this is hope.
The infinite, holy God saw us in our sin—lost, guilty, spiritually dead—and instead of leaving us there, He came for us. Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, stepped into our world, lived the sinless life we could not live, and died in our place on the cross...
He took the punishment our sins deserved.… And then He rose again, proving His infinite power over sin and death.
But to receive this gift of salvation, we must respond.
The Bible calls us to repent—to turn away from sin, to stop trusting in ourselves, and turn fully to Jesus in faith.
Repentance isn’t about becoming perfect—it’s about surrendering. It’s recognizing that we are limited, broken, and sinful... Its about admitting that only Jesus can save us.
And here’s the promise:
When we turn to Him—when we repent and believe the gospel—He doesn’t meet us with judgment, but with forgiveness that again... has no limit… grace that never runs out, and love that never fails.
So don’t wait. Don’t try to clean yourself up first… because you can’t…
Come as you are… Come in repentance.… Come in faith.… And you’ll find that the Infinite God has more than enough mercy for you.
