PSALM 110 INTRODUCTION
David’s authorship
It’s a big deal!
Jesus points to it in Matthew 22:41-46
David is the highest authority on earth at the time…and yet someone is His LORD
Who is talking?
Part 1 - The Father to the Son (vv 1-4)
Part 2 - David to the Father (vv 5-7)
The Gospel in Psalms?
Matthew Henry states: ‘This psalm is pure gospel; it is only, and wholly, concerning Christ, the Messiah promised to the fathers and expected by them.’
This psalm reminds us, then, of the essential nature of the faith of the Old Testament saints.
They were NOT saved by keeping the law of Moses, but rather in the very same way as people today, namely, through faith in Jesus Christ.
The only difference between their faith and ours is that theirs looked forward to the coming Christ, while ours looks back to the Christ who has come.

Psalm 110 shows us that prophecy in the Old Testament is legit!
David and others wrote centuries in advance about the Christ and his redeeming work!
Their writings were fulfilled to the letter by the Lord Jesus Christ when he came as Messiah!
This Psalm is loaded with all kinds of Theological richness. I’m not so sure that plumbing every nook and cranny and chasing every cross reference qualifies as a good sermon…or causes us to cry out to Him this week in view of the text!
God didn’t give us His Word to make us smarter; He gave it to transform us from the inside out.
It’s still quite rich. It’s still quite rewarding.
Let’s take a few moments today and focus on the ONE AND ONLY JESUS CHRIST!
He is our CONQUERING SOVEREIGN KING…FOREVER!
He is our ETERNAL HIGH PRIEST…FOREVER!
Look with me at the first few verses here…
Psalm 110:1 ESV
1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
It’s a very interesting thing that happens here in the Old Testament.
The closest thing we have is like John in the New Testament being caught up on the aisle of Patmos into heaven to behold these incredible sites of the final days unfolding.
It would seem here that David is caught up in some manner and can hear a conversation happening between the Father and the Son.
God is speaking to David…and David is writing what He hears; the is the WORD of God in every sense of the word.
Can you imagine the confusion of the people listening when they heard the king of the land… The highest authority say something about two Lords who are over him?
“The Lord says to my Lord!”
The Father says to the Son
“sit at my right hand until I make your enemies my footstool.”
The Son will reign… how?
Psalm 110:2 ESV
2 The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!
Psalm 2 is connected to this Psalm pretty powerfully as well…
TURN TO PSALM 2 IN YOUR BIBLES, LET TAKE A LOOK AT THE POWER OF GOD’S SON AS KING!
THE MESSIAH KING - THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD - IN PSALM 2.
Psalm 2 ESV
1 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. 5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, 6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” 7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” 10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
The enemies of God are working against His great name…
that He is merciful and gracious
slow to anger
abounding in steadfast love
abounding in faithfulness
By the way, your enemies are the things that creep into your life
Some are wrecking balls.
Some are ninjas
All of them work against God’s great name being stamped on every area of your life!
Let’s read verse 3 together before we put up this first point today.
Psalm 110:3 ESV
3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.
(LET’S READ THAT FIRST PART TOGETHER…OUT LOUD)
What tremendous security there is when we…

SUBMIT TO THIS POWERFUL SOVEREIGN KING

Ps 110.1-3
Notice the word says freely. Your people will offer themselves freely!
David had enemies in his day… He knew who they were. Nations like Felicia, Moab, a Syria, Babylon…
But they were just representatives of how we as humans are rebellious against the sovereign king of the universe!
Each one of us by nature reject God’s perfect rule over us!
We don’t like being told what to do!
We are determined to make our own decisions about our own jobs, our own relationships, our own careers, our money, our rights, etc.
The idea that we could live in “FREEDOM“, but that it comes from this cosmic ruler who would tell us “no” to the things we want - seems completely ludacris!
But there is a picture here of a people who’ve had something radically happen to them. The scripture says your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power.
The Messiah’s people. Jesus’s people that’s you, that’s me as we claim the name of Jesus Christ.
We’re not being dragged, kicking and screaming toward compliance with something, or someone!
NO! Our delight is in the law of the Lord! We are serving a victorious King, who has already conquered death, Hell and the grave!
We are serving a victorious King who has already conquered sin and Satan!
We are serving a victorious resurrected king who conquered our own rebellion toward him!
Christ’s power will expand from His throne with His scepter!
Christ will rule in the midst of His enemies.
Christ will take a people for His own posession (that’s us)…He will change our “want-to”s…He will clothe us in holiness.
WE WILL SUBMIT TO OUR POWERFUL SOVEREIGN KING…BECAUSE OF WHO HE IS…
Philippians 2:9–11 ESV
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
WE WILL SUBMIT TO OUR POWERFUL SOVEREIGN KING…BECAUSE OF WHO HE IS…
Romans 5:6–8 ESV
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
THIS KING - SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIMSELF FOR IT!
IF WE WERE TO LOOK BACK AT VERSE 3 ONE MORE TIME AND MAKE THAT A DECLARATION…
Psalm 110:3 ESV
3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.
“Lord, I offer MYSELF freely to you! Show ME your power today as you clothe ME in holiness.”
BEFORE WE LOOK AT THE SECOND HALF OF THIS BEAUTIFUL TEXT…WE WOULD DO WELL TO PAUSE AND RESPOND HERE.

Application:

FREELY” / Are there areas you’re resisting?
why not surrender those NOW to your Loving, but Conquering King!
Lord, I’m not “freely” giving you _______! Take it now…I want to offer my whole self freely to you today!
ARE YOU RULING? / what areas of your life do you consider “your own,” “hands off” - you like to have control over and rule.
Lord, I want Jesus to rule and reign over my life. I surrender…to You! Conquer me this week with your Word, your Holy Spirit.
Let’s say it together:
“Lord, we offer ourselves freely to you! Show us your power today as you clothe us in holiness.”
Exalting Jesus in Psalms 101–150 He Is Empowered by the Lord (110:2–3)

Walter Chantry captures well how we should respond to the King of verses 1–3:

NOT ONLY DO WE FIND SECURITY AS WE SUBMIT TO THIS KING…
THERE IS INCREDIBLE FREEDOM as we…

TRUST THIS PERFECT ETERNAL PRIEST

Psalm 110:4 ESV
4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
Verse 4 is a lynchpin verse in this text.
It’s a central verse.
Now the scripture teaches us that God is not a man that he should lie.there are times in the scripture where he says “truly, truly”, or if you remember the king James, “fairly verily”. Or some translations say “most assuredly.”
It’s not that what he said up to that point wasn’t true or important, but he’s calling the heroes attention to something. That’s a big deal.
He does that here in the first part of verse 4.
HE WANTS TO ENSURE THE HEARER, READER, SINGER, WORSHIPER, AND ONLOOKER KNOWS - THERE IS NO TURNING BACK FROM THIS TRUTH!
THE MESSIAH WILL A FOREVER PRIEST - HE WILL ALWAYS BE AT HIS POST.
Melchizidek was a limited, earthly example of a mysterious, long-serving, priest who was outside the tribe of LEVI
Jesus’s line is traced back to the line of Judah
which is where Israel’s mind went whenever someone mentioned a scepter from Zion / Jerusalem
The Lord is so good at helping his people understand what things are like… Whenever he can.
We could list many ways that Jesus is like Melchizidekand it’ll give us a cool little wow here as our minds open up in a sermon moment, But they are so many ways that Jesus is unlike any earthly priest, or religious figurehead…
He is so much better than the best this world had to offer for the priesthood!
Hebrews 5:1–10 ESV
1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. 3 Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. 4 And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; 6 as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” 7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
He is both a powerful, sovereign, conquering king and an eternal perfect, always interceding priest for his people.
So much so that as we gaze at Jesus with our Bibles open…
We willingly and freely offer ourselves and say, conquer us king Jesus!
Vanquish the enemies of our souls!
We willingly and freely and fully trust this priest, who also RULES FROM THE THRONE OF GRACE!
In verses 5-7, David’s voice is the one we read (inspired by the Holy Spirit as the Living Word of God of course).
He observes:
The Messiah is seated at the Right Hand of the Father.
He will victoriously shatter kings, nations, chiefs over the whole earth who reject His rule.
This eternal Messiah however, is also somehow human and divine - refreshed by water with his head held high and victorious.
It’s the most quoted Psalm in the New Testament!
The priesthood of Jesus Christ will not end when he retires or dies, like a natural earthly man. His mediation, his standing in the gap between humanity and the father, will never end. It is permanent. It is forever. It is final and it is unchangeable.
1 Timothy 2:5–6 ESV
5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
It is actually the perfect work of this perfect priest that makes his people willing in verse 3.
This priest will grant to his people the forgiveness of sins,
give them access to God,
and completely change their lives…
He makes all things new, and he does this forever!
Think about Colossians 3.1-3 in light of this.
Colossians 3:1–3 “1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
The KING has raised you.
The PRIEST has brought you in to sit in heavenly places.
The KING has conquered your old man. The PRIEST has hidden you in God’s hand.
You are completely covered…completely protected by a POWERFUL SOVEREIGN VICTORIOUS KING and you are known, loved, prayed for, cared for and shepherded by A PERFECT ETERNAL PRIEST WHO WILL NEVER FAIL and never takes a day off!
One of the greatest and most profound effects this song can have on us on this Sunday is to give us assurance.
Assurance in our deepest caverns of our heart. God is changing lives all over the world through the priestly ministry of Jesus, men and women and girls and boys are willingly and gladly and freely offering themselves into the kings service.
And one day soon - regardless of the high highs and the low lows that we experienced day-to-day here on this earth -One day soon we too will drink from the refreshing stream of life, with our heads held high, victorious, as we rule and rain with Christ forever and ever and ever!
BUT WHILE WE’RE STILL HERE…Let’s drive this deep into our hearts today…

Application:

OK, you know he’s the priest. The perfect priest. The eternal priest. He never fails and he never falls asleep.
He wants to love you and care for you in a way that sets you up for a vibrant and rewarding, spiritual life.
He wants you to know, love and obey him deeply, together in covenant with his family.
He has set the table so that you can make disciple-making disciples for his glory where you work live and play.
BUT, maybe you have picked up some things that are weighing you down.
emotional clutter
too busy chasing empty pursuits
maybe guilt and shame that you SHOULDN’T be carrying - you’re not capable of carrying…
If Jesus walked INTO THIS SANCTUARY TODAY and said, I’m here to take whatever you want to give me…doesn’t matter how ugly, how bad, how “little”, how big it is…I want you to trust me with your whole life - let me have what’s slowing you down. I want to destroy the enemies of you knowing, loving, and obeying me fully…will you TRUST ME?
CAST IT ON ME / HURL IT ON ME - I’M YOUR PRIEST, I’M THE LOVER OF YOUR SOUL
What would you give him…?
Jesus is here in the person of His Holy Spirit.
What load are you carrying that the priest can take for you?
How can He lift you today?
Lord, here is my…it’s in my way. I want to TRUST YOU more than I want to HANG ON TO THIS.
