Faith Restored: A Journey from Doubt to Belief
Text: Luke 24:13-53
Introduction
The resurrection of Jesus was met with skepticism, sorrow, and confusion.
Many struggled to believe, but Jesus patiently restored their faith.
Today, we explore three key encounters that transformed doubt into conviction.
The Testimony of the Women (Luke 24:1-12)
The women were the first witnesses to the empty tomb.
They encountered angels who proclaimed, "He is not here; He has risen!"
Their testimony was dismissed by the disciples as "nonsense" (Luke 24:11).
Lesson: Restored Faith often begins with hearing the truth, even when it seems unbelievable.
Peter & John run to the tomb
Lk 24:12, Jn 20:3-6
Lk focuses on Peter.
Who left immediately to inspect the tomb
And left in wonder
John expands more
He adds that He also went with Peter
Outran peter looked inside, but was scared to enter the tomb
When peter arrives, he goes in
Peter finds the linens lying there
The handkerchief around his head not lying with the linens
Folded together in a place by itself
Then John went in “He saw and believed”
They did not know the scriptures
They went to their own homes
Jesus appears to Peter
John must have returned to the disciples and reported that the tomb was empty and that he believed that Jesus had risen
But there is an important note, we must not oversee
Later the disciples are gathered and they excited about the reports
And one of them says, “The lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Cefas “Simon-Peter”
Peters’ way back home
When Peter and John departed from the tomb
They went back to their own homes
Peter on his way to his home, encounters Jesus
It was so important for Jesus to restore Peter
He first appeared to the women
To spark their faith, and begin the message
But Jesus immediately goes out to find Peter, whom he loves.
Jesus knows that Peters heart is broken
Peter followed to see where they had taken Jesus
He was hiding amongst the people
But people began to recognize that he was a follower of Jesus
Peter denied Jesus three times and rooster crows (Lk 22:54-60)
Jesus turns and looks at Peter Lk 22:61
Peter cries bitterly
Why was he crying?
Was it that he denied Jesus three times
Was it the rooster that crowded and alarmed him
NO… It was the eyes of Jesus…
“…and then the Lord turned and looked at Peter”
The eyes of Jesus
Isa 52:14 his appearance
Ps 32:8 the counsel of God
2 Chron 16:9 the whole earth
1 Peter 3:12, the eyes of the Lord on the righteous
Rev 1:14, eyes like fire
Daniel, His eyes like flaming torches
Jesus eyes
Are of love and compassion
He did not condemn Peter
Jesus eyes forgave and comforted peter
But it was too much for Peter to bare
We do not know what transpired in that meeting
Scripture doesn’t tell us
It does tell us of his second encounter with Peter in Galilee
But what we can know is that the first person Jesus cared to restore… was Peter
The Two Disciples on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35)
Cleopas and another disciple walked in sorrow, discussing Jesus’ death.
They didn’t believe the women’s testimony
Nor the report from those who went to see the tomb
Jesus joined them, but they did not recognize Him.
V16, their eyes were blinded
Sorrow blinds us from recognizing the presence of God
Jesus is kind to them, and is patient with them
V17, what are you talking about? Are you sad?
Cleofas “do you not know what has happened”
Jesus “what things?”
Concerning Jesus of Nazareth
He was a mighty prophet in deeds and word
He was crucified
We were hoping
He would redeem Israel
Three days have passed
The report of the women and of John
The woman saw the empty tomb and Jesus
But they did not believe their testimony
The disciple saw the tomb, but didn’t see the Body.
The disciple believed it, but had not seen the body
The Two want physical evidence
No Body, No Faith
Jesus says to them
Lk 24:25
Foolish (insensato)
Slow to believe, (Tardos para creer)
Los profetas
Ought not the Christ suffer (no era necesario que el Cristo padeciera)
He explained the Scriptures, revealing how the Messiah had to suffer and rise again.
From Moses to the prophets
Moses
Writes the first 5 books of the Bible
Gen 3:15… enmity between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent
Gen 12:13… all the families of the earth will be blessed through you (Abraham, speaking of his offspring Jesus)
Num 21:9… All who saw the serpent were healed
Deut 18:5… God would raise a prophet
The Gospel of John 5:46, Jesus told his Disciples that Moses was writing about Him…
The Prophets
David Ps 16:10
They reached Emmaus, and asked him to stay with them, they wanted to hear more
Their eyes were opened when He broke bread, and they realized Jesus was alive!
Their faith was restored… and He vanished before their eyes
And they said to eachother
Didn’t our hearts burn within us?
While He talked to us
While He opened the scriptures to us
That same hour they returned to Jerusalem
Imagine their excitement
“we got to go tell them what just happened to us”
Lesson: Jesus walks with us in our doubts, revealing truth through His Word.
Jesus 1st Appearance to the Disciples (Luke 24:33-53)
Lk 24:33-53 …
Read last verses… verses 36-43
With Thomas Present
Read Jn 20:24-29
27 Luego dijo a Tomás: —Pon aquí tu dedo y mira mis manos; acerca tu mano y métela en mi costado; y no seas incrédulo, sino creyente.
