Here’s a 25–30 minute lesson plan for Week 3: “What If I Don’t Understand?”, centered on Proverbs 2:3–6 and focused on encouraging perseverance in Bible reading and finding help when confused.

🎯 Goal: Encourage perseverance and show how to find help when confused.

📖 Key Verse:

Proverbs 2:3–6

“Indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

I. Welcome & Introduction (3–5 minutes)

Begin with a light story or relatable question:
“Have you ever read something and thought, ‘What did I just read?’ Maybe it was a textbook, a manual… or even the Bible?”
Say: “This week we’re talking about what to do when we don’t understand something in the Bible—and why that’s okay.”

II. Read the Key Verse Together (3 minutes)

Proverbs 2:3–6 (read aloud together or have a student read)
Ask: “What words or phrases stood out to you?”

III. Teaching: Understanding Takes Effort (8–10 minutes)

A. Confusion is Normal

Many parts of the Bible were written in a different time, culture, and language.
It’s okay to have questions! Even adults, pastors, and scholars do.
“Some things are hard to understand—but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth understanding.”

B. God Promises Wisdom

Verse 6: “For the Lord gives wisdom…”
God wants to help us understand—He doesn’t want us to stay confused.

C. It Takes Action

Verses 3–4 are active: “call out,” “cry aloud,” “look for it,” “search for it.”
Understanding comes through effort and asking.
Illustration: You don’t find treasure lying around—you dig for it.
The Bible is a treasure chest, but sometimes you need tools to open it.

IV. Practical Tools for When You’re Confused (5–6 minutes)

1. Ask God First (Prayer)
Before you read, ask: “God, help me understand what I’m reading.”
2. Ask Questions
Write them down. Don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t get this.”
3. Use Tools
Bible dictionaries, study Bibles, commentaries, trusted websites (like BibleProject.com)
4. Ask People
Mentors, pastors, group leaders, friends.
5. Keep Reading
Sometimes understanding comes later. Let Scripture interpret Scripture.

V. Group Discussion (7–8 minutes)

Use the provided questions:
What’s a part of the Bible you’ve found confusing?
Why do you think some parts of the Bible are harder to understand than others?
What do you do when something doesn’t make sense in your Bible reading?
Have you ever had a verse suddenly “click” for you? What happened?
What tools or people can you go to for help when you’re stuck?
Tip: Let students share freely. Affirm their honesty and curiosity.

VI. Wrap-Up & Challenge (3–4 minutes)

Big Idea: God isn’t frustrated with our questions—He invites them! Understanding the Bible is a journey, and God walks with us on it.
Challenge:
This week, when something doesn’t make sense, don’t skip it.
Pray, ask a question, or ask someone for help.
Optional Verse to Memorize: Proverbs 2:6
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
Closing Prayer Idea:
Thank God for giving us the Bible. Ask Him for wisdom to understand and the courage to keep seeking answers.
