Introduction

In Matthew 10:1-15, we see Jesus commissioning His twelve disciples. He calls them, equips them, and sends them out with specific instructions. Let’s explore how these principles apply to our calling and mission as His disciples today.

Point 1: The Calling of the Twelve (vv. 1-4)

Explanation: Jesus calls His twelve disciples and gives them authority over unclean spirits, to heal sicknesses, and to preach.
Key details:
The authority was given by Jesus Himself (v. 1).
The list of the twelve, showing the diversity of the group (vv. 2-4).
Application:
Jesus still calls and equips His followers today.
No matter our background, Jesus can use us for His purposes.

Point 2: The Charge to Go and Proclaim (vv. 5-8)

Explanation: Jesus sends them out to preach to the lost sheep of Israel, to heal, cleanse, and raise the dead, freely giving what they have freely received.
Key details:
Focused mission field (vv. 5-6).
Preaching the kingdom of heaven (v. 7).
Signs and wonders accompanying their message (v. 8).
Application:
We’re called to proclaim the Good News and do it with urgency and compassion.
We must be generous with the spiritual gifts God has given us.

Point 3: The Caution and Instructions for the Journey (vv. 9-15)

Explanation: Jesus instructs them to travel light, depend on God’s provision, and be discerning in their ministry.
Key details:
No extra provisions (vv. 9-10)—a dependence on God.
Entering homes and finding worthy hosts (vv. 11-13).
Warning of rejection and the judgment for those who do not receive the message (vv. 14-15).
Application:
Trust in God’s provision rather than material resources.
Be faithful in sharing the message regardless of the response.
Understand the weight and importance of the Gospel.

Conclusion

Jesus called His disciples, gave them authority and specific instructions, and warned them of the challenges ahead. As His followers today, we too are called to go, proclaim, and trust in Him—no matter the cost.
